just saw my first umphrey's mcgee show last night in Nashville, and honestly i'm at a loss for words to describe the skill and energy this band carries. freakin unbelievable... before the initial set, rob wasserman stepped up and dropped a mix of sounds from his upright bass later to be joined by the percussionists... getting into the main set, their performance of spinal tap's 'tonight i'm gonna rock you tonight' was right on. i was kinda hoping they would follow that one with '(listen to the)flower people' =P ... they teased van halen and zepplin... and jammed like no one i've seen in a while. i would highly recommend checking these guys out at bonnaroo, they're tight.

Don't mean to rain on the parade.... Just registering an opinion.... I've seen them three times... saw them on TV this week (WGN in Chicago).
They are REALLY talented. Technically SUPERB musicians. IMPRESSIVE command of their insruments.
I can't seem to get into them though. They seem very derivitave to me. Just seems like its been done before by people who were risking it all. Umphrey's seems like they are covering safe, established territory to me. I'll be at Vida Blue/Praxis.
Not trying to be a jerk, just trying to provide those who aren't familiar with Umphrey's with a different perspective .

I have to totally disagree with you Faletti. I don't think that Umphrey's sticks to "safe" stuff or that they're just recycling what's been done before. I think they are edgier than the typical jam band, more prog-rock, and I love the wide range of music that they incorporate into their shows. Everyone's entitled to their opinion, however.

for real.. they go into teritories of hard rock and such that jambands usually don't touch, they do follow some ground already layed but they are a newer band and you have to give them more time to fly off... i just saw them last night and it was really cool, i had fun and they jammed really well.. i however am not going to be seeing them late night.. they are good and fun but no praxis!
