Both the Mars Volta and Jack Johnson have new albums out and i've given both a spin or two, and they both seem pretty good. Much in the vain of their other albums but none the less very good. I think that "Frances the Mute" (Mars Volta) is good but not as good as the previous album. And "In Between Dreams" just bulids more on Jack Johnson's mellow songwriting and playing. Anyone else heard the albums and have any thoughts?
i love the new mars volta cd. every song. i heard that the vocals arn't that great live, but that was just from one person. has anyone here been to a mars volta live show?
I think it's amazing that so many people on this and other boards were excited to get both of those albums right when they came out (as was I) when they are so completely different from each other. I guess it's just of a reflection of the diversity of Bonnaroo and its crowd.
Jack Johnson - more of the same, and there's nothing wrong with that. His is not the kind of music I get passionate about, but it is perfect when the mood is right, and its a good thing to be in that mood. "Banana pancakes" cements the status of JJ albums as the all time best "music to listen to while cooking breakfast on a Saturday afternoon."
Mars Volta - I still don't completely "get" these guys but I am pretty sure I want to. I picked up all three (2 1/2?) of their albums pretty quickly and am just trying to digest. I know I will be checking them out in a late night tent barring some disastrous conflict (please don't put them opposite Trey). The heaviness of parts of it are pretty novel for my tastes but I am digging it when it is contextualized by other styles. The music is incredibly tight, unpredictable and entertaining. The vocals are just not my cup of tea but can be interesting. Reading some of the press on them makes me very curious about lyrics but I'm not picking up a whole lot so far. I can't quite bring myself to say I love them yet but yet I keep listening to them over and over....

new albums!
Jack Johnson: just like his other stuff. maybe getting a little more funky on some songs. good stuff, i'm a fan. but like someone said above, not really something i get passionate about.
The Mars Volta: IMO, Frances the Mute is the best theing to be released since De-Loused. Truely some next-level shit. Shatters all genres. A very intense and mind melting listening experience. One that does require some patience from time to time as well though. Most definately another classic.
(ps. the vocals kick ass live. cedric is the closest thing to robert plant's wail i've ever heard. not to mention jon theodore's thunderous, bonham-esque drumming.)

I saw a live concert of Mars Volta on On Demand, the Comcast digital cable thing. Yea, the guy's voice doesn't sound as good live, but thier jamming kinda makes up for it. They kinda get experimental with some songs. Thier drummer is pretty frickin unbelievable.
I just picked up the new JJ, and must say, I really like it. It's Jack, no doubt about it. And Banana Pancakes has to be one of the best songs on there, though I do like them all. Mars Volta, I just introduced myself to. Not quite sure what to make of them yet. I picked up De-Loused to give them a try since I hadn't heard anything by them and figured I should if they were playing at roo. I'll see if a bit once I've had a chance to listen to them without distraction.
