A Floridian singer/songwriter whose actual name is Sam Beam. He's a former filmmaker/teacher who plays with a rotating group of musicians, including his sister. Sam has released two LP's and a couple EP's -- the most recent of which, The Woman King, was relatively beefed up and totally delivers the awesome. You'll hear Nick Drake in many descriptions and that's fairly accurate. His hobbies include hushed vocals, gentle acoustic picking, banjos, and lying in the grass weeping.
Well, I had some spare cash this weekend so I went to my local Borders and picked up their CD (yeah, I know I gave my money to a mega corp.) Damn, it was good. The production value was a little questionable but the songs are just haunting. Perfect for driving home in the rain. I can't wait to hear this stuff with a full band.

Awesome!
I'm assuming you picked up The Creek Drank the Cradle if you're discussing the production values. It's a fairly lo-fi affair, but you're definitely accurate in your use of the word "haunting."
yeah, it was Creek Drank the Cradle. They had the woman king Ep there as well but I wanted to get to the beginning and work my up. After giving the album a second listening, I could easily make some comparisons to Southern Accents/Echo Tom Petty. I don't know if it's a southern thing or not.
