I just read that John Mayer is playin with herbie hanc0ck at bonnaroo, something i did not know. I think Mayer hasnt yet released his good stuff and i havnt heard him live, it should be interesting to hear him play at bonnaroo.
This could be really cool. I'm by no means a John Mayer fan but he did perform at the Jammy awards a few weeks ago and from what I read people were really impressed that he could really play the guitar. I guess he ripped a lot more than he does on his records.
I followed Mayer during his early acoustic days and I will say this. He can rip up a guitar just as good as anybody. People just don't give him a chance because of what they hear on the radio haha. Another reason why I don't understand this apparent "counter-culture" just because it's on the radio people assume it's not good, instead of giving it a chance because deep down he has some crucial tunes. Especially his early acoustic stuff (A LOT OF WHICH HAS NOT EVEN BEEN RELEASED ON ALBUMS YET)
John Mayer is going to eventually be a Billy Joel Elton John type when it comes to amount of good songs released over a long career
Last December here in NY John did two gigs at Webster Hall where he did nothing but the blues. I purchased 2 tickets for my girlfriend and myself and I have to say this guy kicked butt on that guitar. H did some Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, BB King and some hendrix. He even mixed in some Ben Harper blues style. Going into the show I really didn't care for him, but after seeing him I have a new found respect for the guy.
