Just started this so people can suggest some bands that are smaller, or just a band that you beleive to be a must see i suppose.
1. Tea Leaf Green - dont know exactly how big they are, but they are pretty good nevertheless. 2. Jurassic 5 - some good hip hop type stuff, usually not a big fan of most. 3. Ray Lamontagne 4. Iron and Wine 5. Signal Path - some technoesque stuff
I'll agree with Ziggy on this one and suggest Tea Leaf Green. They write great songs and have some of the best vocals in the scene.
-The Gourds- They do the cover of "Gin and Juice" that everybody on the internet mislabeled as Phish or String Cheese Incident. Never heard anything else by them but they sound like they could be fun.
-Lake Trout -John Butler Trio -Yonder Mountain String Band
I'll make a big plug for M. Ward again. He's conflicting with the Kings of Leon, who will also be great, but I've seen them enough times to skip with a good conscience. I just recently found out M. Ward was Beth Orton's guitar partner at Roo last year. Someone mentioned it, I checked on the DVD, and that's definitely him plucking away with his hat pulled over his eyes.
He's definitely worth checking out. His material can go from gorgeously sparse folk to vaudevillian piano stompers to straight forward rockers, without ever feeling erratic. The man creates melodies many songwriters these days only dream about.
Matis Yahu - good n.y. raggae and he he is in the full hassidic jewish get-up Ozomatli- Latin vibes with hip - hop beats.. they play with J5 alot Perpetual Groove - I have a song from them that is in my top 5 songs of all time.. other then that they are "just" a solid spacey jam band..
Jump, Little Children. jay clifford stole his voice from a siren...and made it male. Iron and Wine again, as well. Sam Beam is simply amazing at writing those songs. G. Love and Special Sauce. (did a lot of stuff with Jack Johnson before he got big, if that gets you interested) Kwaito (South African hip-hop, great stuff) Danny Winn and the Earthlings (ska) The Shins Xavier Rudd The Jayhawks
I think everyone should check out Ladysmith Black Mambazo. They are a traditional African acapella group from (shock of all shocks) South Africa. Very cool and culturally significant music. They are good to listen to, but their concert is even better. If you live near Louisville, KY, they are playing a free show coming up in March.

I had the privilege of experiencing Karl Denson's Tiny Universe at 'roo 05 and it was quite possibly the best concert I've ever witnessed. Also, some bands that were previosuly mentioned like Iron & Wine, Ray Lamontagne, J5, Keller Williams, Xavier Rudd, Matisyahu and Amos Lee all put on great shows
trey puts on a good show i.e. bonnaroo 2004 umphrees mcgee chicago based 2 lead guitars the solos are amazing my morning jacket the funnest show of 2005 in my opinion

Alright, I've decided whenever i find a new band il like I'll fill ya'll in. Today its THe Mountain Goats, theyr kinda like the decemberist and rem, but still a lot different. I'm having trouble explaining them right now, but if you like indie rock type stuff, theyr worth a look.

I would love to see Yonder Mountain String Band back as well as Blues Traveller. Oh, and Rusted Root - they are an awesome jam band and I'm surprised that they have not made it to a Roo yet. Their shows are great.
More than ever since he is on the '06 line up is Mike Doughty. He is the ex-lead singer for Soul Coughing, but this time around he doesn't rely on the electronic sounds and whatnot. It still has the same sort of cadence and feel but using instruments.
