i've seen him w/the jicks 3 times..never played pavement material, but i know he has a couple of times. I wouldnt rule it out, but dont get your hopes up. regardless, they put on quite a show...malkmus continues to become a better guitar player each time i see him.
I saw him open for Radiohead(oddly enough), on thier last tour. He was alright. The singing was a little off, and it didn't blow me away, by any means. I'd really look forward to seeing his new material live, though. I think his new album is his best solo work, and dare I say, almost as good as anything he's done with Pavement.

I was really excited to see them on the bill. I have seem them one time and it was a really good show, not sure how it will be in a tent 50 times bigger then the little venue I saw him in but I think it will be great. maybe he will pull some pavement out cause he is at the roo!
That Silver Jews disc was in my top three of '05. Malkmus shreads sh*t up, but it's David Berman's twisted lyrics and off center songs that make that album what it is.

i keep hearing alot about the silver jews...they will be travelling through columbus in a few weeks and I plan to check out the show. Sounds like you guys recommend it.
Well, David Berman is The Silver Jew, who is just as well known for his poetry (if not more so) as for his music. I've only skimmed through his earlier stuff, but have enjoyed all that I've encountered. He's a notorious hermit who really NEVER performs live, so this tour is something special. A couple years ago he tried to kill himself with a whole lot of pills and has had a rebirth of sorts. I remember reading articles about how years ago how him and Malkmus would walk into performances with just their guitars and some Grateful Dead backing tapes. They'd just jam out over the stuff, much to the audience's dismay . ;D
I wasn't familiar with any of the solo stuff before the Roo announcement and I just picked up Face the Truth. I'm only about halfway through but WOW! This is great music. Here's a guy who knows what he is doing with a guitar. Malkmus and the Jicks move straight to my top few must see list for Bonnaroo, but in the shorter term, I am just going to wear this CD out.
Stephen Malkmus has put off plans for a spring tour, according to a post on his official Web site. "Now it is dust -- can't find the right drummer," Malkmus wrote. Although longtime drummer John Moen played on Malkmus' 2005 Matador album "Face the Truth," he is now a full-time member of the Decemberists, who recently jumped from Kill Rock Stars to Capitol Records.
Malkmus was last seen on the live stage in January, when he played a solo acoustic show opening for singer/songwriter Rebecca Gates at the Knitting Factory Tap Bar in New York. "I'll let you know when more gigs [and a] new album are cooking," he said on his site.
The lone show on Malkmus' schedule at present is a June 18 appearance at the Bonnaroo Festival in Manchester, Tenn.
Malkmus is probably one of two people I am planning on seeing from the start of their set to the end come hell or high water (along with Radiohead), so I certainly hope the Bonnaroo date holds up. I knew nothing of him a few weeks ago but I have been immersing myself in Face the Truth and more recently Pig Lib since the announcement. I love this stuff. I pretty much missed the Pavement boat, and will go back for that stuff once I wear out the Jicks stuff, and I haven't gotten to the Silver Jews yet. I can guarantee I will in due time (new Malkmus love+#2 on Ryan's Top 60 Albums list=I'm gettin' that).
(stops typing, grabs mp3 player, listening to "Freeze the Saints" now,
[quote author=melikecheese board=music thread=1138822203 post=1140804845 is he not touring with silver jews this spring???[/quote]
That's my big question right now. Is he always a part of the Silver Jews? Can I expect him at their April Chicago date?

I'm pretty sure I read that he is NOT touring with the Silver Jews. He was one of the founding members of the band (Pavement was actually an offshoot of the Silver Jews), but hasn't been with them on all recordings.
I actually prefer Malkmus' solo stuff to Pavement.....although I did just listen to Wowee Zowee, and it is pretty remarkable.

I cannot WAIT to see Steve & Co... WEIRD, "Discretion Grove" came up on shuffle right as I was reading this. I saw him open for Radiohead as well back in 2003, back before I even knew he was the leader of Pavement, and it was a really rockin' show.
Now that I'm familiar with almost all his projects, I looked back recently at the setlist from that show and apparently his piano player teased the audience with "5-4=Unity" at one point, but they didn't play any other Pavement material. I would die if they busted out any Pavement, but Stephen alone is going to be awesome.
Silver Jews sold out already here in Chicago, I was really hoping to go since it was their first tour ever. Can't win 'em all, but they'd seem like a good fit for Bonnaroo should Berman be able to handle it.

I am hoping he will be invited to jam with some of the other bands. That would be sweet to see. I feel like he might be overlooked by some of them because he's not a jam guitarist and not a big part of the scene. He's guitar work is really amazing.
