I have noticed a lot of people requesting the Arcade Fire and the Decemberists to play and I thought I would start a thread about Devotchka as they have a similar sound to both of these bands and are not a very well known name. They sound a bit more ethnic Europe then the other 2 but they have a similar sound. Some songs to check out from the latest album are "The Enemy Guns" "How It Ends" and I really like "Charlotte Mittnacht (The Fabulous Destiny of...)" because it sounds like a song that I would hear in a French movie. They have many many instruments in the band, some of which I don't even know what it is. Like a bouzouki. Going to have to look them up.
So if you like those other 2 bands give these guys a shot. I have seen them live and they put on a good show. I purchased both albums after the show so that means I must have been impressed.
Post back if you check um out and let us all know what you think.
I'm not too familiar with Devotchka, the Decemberists or Arcade Fire, but have heard several songs from each. From what I've heard, Devotchka seems to have a considerably more "ethnic/European" sound, and more emphasis on the non-traditional-rock instruments ("classical" horns, strings) but maybe I just haven't heard the right songs. I would also love to see Arcade Fire and/or the Decemberists added, just commenting that they sound considerably more "rock and roll" than Devothchka from what little I've heard.
In any case, I really like Devotchka's sound, and as a "classic" foreign film fan I get the exact same vibe: "it feels like I'm in an old French/Italian movie". This would be a perfect atmospheric early afternoon (sometimes known at Bonnaroo as "morning") set imo. This aspect of their sound (although not necesarily any others) has some similarities with the Dresden Dolls stuff I have checked out since they were announced. Between the headlining Brits, these bands, and stuff like Balkan Beat Box (possibly my favorite new discovery from the lineup announcement), there is quite a European flair to the lineup so far.
