So are they something I might dig? Where would I start if I were to check something out?
I've heard their name tossed around for years, but all I know is that they seem to have a correlation with heavy drugs and a problematic fanbase. If this is way off, or I have been misinformed, please correct me. Otherwise I will stand by my broad generalizations and wild assumptions.
Not to fuel any fires or say that I agree with this but you are correct aquariumdrunk. They are synonymous with teenaged "E-tards". I don't agree with judging a band by it's fanbase and I have never really been into Disco Bisuits so i can't judge much but thats all I ever hear about them too.
I am completely non-familiar with the Disco Biscuits, and always just thought of them as another jam band. They are considered a jam band, right? I guess I'll keep my more neutral assumptions in place until I hear more, just to give them a fair shot, but I have to say that I think "e-tards" is a really great, descriptive word.
I'm really excited about Umphrey's, and I believe I've heard of Disco Biscuits/Umphrey's collaborations. If that's the case, I would imagine they can play, as Umphrey's are some of the best musicians I've ever seen (although not entirely my cup of tea).
Why the negative comments about the Disco Biscuits? You guys admit to having no point of reference on the subject, so why talk trash? They do have a reputation for having a very rowdy fanbase, which is sort of true, we like to party. That being said, they do not bring more of a drug scene than any other band in the "jamband" genre. I would bet money that there were more drugs per capita at any phish show than at any tDB show.
As far as a starting point for their music, they have two great studio albums. The first is Uncivilized Area, lots of their classic songs and it has a very rock'n roll feel to it. The other is They Missed The Perfume, this one is way more experimental and uses mostly electronic beats in every song. It's a great record, but some people get turned off by the electonic element. Personally, it's my favorite.
You can also get hundreds of live shows from archive.org, I suggest 10/4/02 and 10/5/02 as great starting points. Those shows are hot and they sound perfect.
The Disco Biscuits were the first of the jambands to really blend rock and electronica, they dubbed it "trancefusion". Most of their show is a dance-party, but they write very good songs and their lyrics are WAY above average. If tDB get a late-night slot, be sure to check it out, it will be a party...i promise.

I wasn't talking any sh*t man -- I was just inquiring. Judging by umphreak's response, I'm not the only one who has heard negative things about the fanbase. I'd never judge a band by their fanbase though and like I said, it's only what I had heard. No harm was meant buddy!

Pretty sure I wasn't talking any trash either. I only told aquariumdrunk I've heard the same things. I actually have the Disco Biscuits album"Senor Boombox" and I don't really think it's all that good. There are a few good songs here and there but it's pretty weak. I've heard some of the stuff off the albums moreedrums recommended and they are better. If they get a latenight set I would check it out because, even though I'm not into them, they know how to throwdown a party set. The biggest turn off for me is that they have horrible vocals. Worst part of the band.
I definitely wasn't trying to trash them in any way either, although I could see how you could get that impression from my post.
I don't know a thing about them and was interested in getting a description like the one you gave. They seem to be perfect for a late night spot. I know there were rumors of this before they were announce, I know Superfly doesn't like to repeat the late night performers too much (only Galactic has if I remember correctly, and that was three years apart and with the "Krewe de Carnival" aspect added), and there aren't a lot of bands that scream "late night" to me on the bill so far. If that's the case I can pretty much garauntee I'll at least be checking them out.
If they don't let Umphrey's do late night (for the above reason), couldn't we expect some of them to show up during the Disco Biscuits (a la moe. with Umphrey's in '04)?
For what its worth, I could care less about the reputation of any band or genre's fan base, whether its the Disco Biscuits, Dave Mathews, jam-band fans or hip-hop fans. I've seen way too many exceptions to the rule to care too much about the rule.
Just my opinion. The #1 complaint people usually have about Umphrey's is the vocals, which were what I first liked about the band so what do I know. I didn't mean to come off as saying there albums suck, I was just trying to compare "Senor Boombox" to what I'd heard off the other albums. I would be at their latenight set in a heartbeat regardless of what I've written. Especially now that their playin with Umphreys.
I personally think the Disco Biscuits and Umphrey's McGee are the 2 best jambands on the scene right now. Both of them have amazing talent, write great songs, and jam their asses off. Both have nuts for vocals, but let's be realistic, we don't see either band b/c of their vocal prowess.

Im not too aware of the disco biscuits, downloading a show as we speak. I personally love umphreys vocals, thats not what i see them for, but its nice to see a jam band that i think has really good vocals and sings often enough. Thats what i like about them, o yea, and the insane guitars.

If you havnt heard the disco biscuits, and like umphreys, you should probably check them out. I dont think theyr anywhere near as good as umphreys, but if theres nothing conflicting I'd be interested in checking them out. THeres a few sbd shows on archive.org of theirs that are a good download.
