I was listening to Manitoba last night and it struck me -- what this lineup really needs is some sort of post rock band to properly bend our minds. I'd suggest (in order of interest): Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Explosions in the Sky, Mogwai, or Manitoba. Can you imagine hearing GSYBE washing over a crowd of 50,000 through those massive speakers? It'd make me ;D ;D
I saw GSYBE a few years ago and about 10 people passed out from just getting entranced by the music. You really felt like you were floating above the crowd. I'd say one of these bands would be a must-add! (Bonnaroo organizers take note).

I am not sure where these bands would paly...you cant give them a night show, its just to mellow for most people, esp. is they are not familiar with the music. Even a daytime show might be dry without the lights and lasers...I think it would be a great addition for any of the bands. Its a part of music not really represented at the roo.
I will be going to see Mogwai on the 4th! I'm pretty pumped...

They are a crazy band my friend has played a bunch for me. I dont really think they fit the roo so well though and i doubt 50,000 people go for them over all the other bands. You could give a band like that a tent show though i suppose. They seem more likely at sasquatch or coachella... Bonnaroo is fast becoming the middle ground between alot of festies though.
Manitoba brings the noise live. I have seen them three times and have been very impressed with all three. All of the members are multi-instrumentalists but the best is when they get on drum sets. The first show that I saw, there were three of them on drums at the crescendo's of the songs. It rocked my socks off and then they get all ethereal which puts a big-ass smile on my face. They do this great video backdrop thing while they are playing which is matched up with the song they are playing so it creates this living cartoon type visual. They would be great for an hour set in one of the tents at night and then maybe get the Lips to come on after them. Hey, if I am dreaming then I might as well dream big.
Also they are called Caribou nowadays due to a legal issue with some washed up punk rocker call d!ck Manitoba.
You mean Handsome D!ck Manitoba. He might be a liittle old now, but he kicked ass back in the day. It does suck that he did the whole you can't use my name crap though.
I've never seen Mogwai live Ziggy, but from all accounts, you'll really enjoy it.
Also, don't forget earplugs! If you've heard any of their recordings, you know just how explosive some of the highs can get. Even the most anti-earplug people I know have emphasized how important they are at a Mogwai show.
Dear lord, I saw Mogwai last night in Chapel Hill, and it was quite incredible. Thanks for the tip about the earplugs -- I didn't use them for Mogwai, but I did use them for the opening act, Growing. The Mogwai show was . . . intense, to say the least. Their sound's really expanded live, far beyond what their albums sound like. Wow, what a show, I'm still reeling from it! I don't think that they'd fit in at the 'roo though -- I still think that Godspeed, You! Black Emperor would work, though it'd never happen.
Or the grand-daddies of Post-Rock - Slint. They recently reformed for a short tour, although I don't think 'Roo is their kind of gig. Being a Louisville boy myself, I had to drop their name in this thread.
i never think of that kind of music as being "gloomy." it's the same thing people say about radiohead. i think it's transcendental and psychedelic. every time i listen to it i get a huge smile on my face and i keep thinking "yes, yes, Yes, YEs, YES, YESSSSSSS!" i consider it meditative. there's no accounting for taste.

I'll give u some karma for that post inkybod... i have the same reaction... do u like the song "Let Down"? that song especially... check out a band called "West Indian Girl" they have a handful of songs that give me that same transcendental / psychedelic / meditative / uplifting feeling...
