The previous post was made by me, the one who started the thread, and never did I "ask about MTV fans" I was just making an observation about a particular song. But I do apologize. You did not make any "gross generalization" and it was incorrect to use that term. I am 100% behind you in the Trey and Phil prediction! On March 16th, I'll let you know about the crowd. Amen just because you don't understand or agree with another culture or religion doesn't make it wrong in any way. He practices different cultural beliefs, thats all. Maybe he finds things you might do offensive it doesn't mean he is not going to play Bonnaroo. If it bothers you so much write a letter to him, or try to understand why his religion calls for him to do these things. Maybe you'll find a answer and be able to accept his beliefs whether you think they are right or wrong.

I don't think Matisyahu has anything against women the reason that men and women don't touch each other when they are Hasidic Jews is because both men and women consider their bodies to be sacred and not for everybody else's gaze or touch. No where in any of those articles does he ever say he has anything against women and/or thinks any less of them than men. You are simply jumping to conclusions without knowing the full story....hmmm, sounds familiar.

im not jumping to any conclusions.. i dont care how he met his wife opr what he does at home... what was said about that part was more out of curiosity then anythign else.... but the guy comes to roo.. refuses to play music with woman.. refuses to speak to women and in my minds eye ( you might not see it that way) he is discriminating against women... it dosent matter if it is his religion or even if he was just a discriminating not a very nice person..... when a female waits around after a show and sees him signing autographs and is unable to get one only for the reason of being female it is wrong.. she bought a ticket and a cd just like everyonelse... im sure that dosent make them feel very good...it dosent belong at roo imo....and he wouldnt explain it to them if he had the time because women are not even spoken to let alone a man explaining his actions to a woman.... maybe the guy should stick to playing all male shows at synagouges (sp?) and selling his cds there... oh wait there is no money in that... hes a gimmick and will go away... why dont you all go check out some legit info on the subject... it is not just some little quirk they have.. it is a systematic degredation of a womans self image....women are taught that they cannot touch holy books because they menstrate...hasidic jews say a prayer every morining in thanks for not being made a woman... they believe that everyone who is not a devout hasidic jew is a drug abuser, an alcoholic, that they beat and rape their families.. these are some backwards beliefs that they are free to have but do not belong at roo.... if i had a chance to question him on these topics i wouldnt do it unless my sister could interview him for me.....i dont know if this is what he is all about but he puts himself out there as a devout hasidic jew and that is what they are all about, and from everything that hes said and all of his actions it is pretty obvious thats what hes about..... i dont know how anyone can say this type of intolerance is acceptable at bonnaroo....and dont give me that your being intolerant crap.. because there is a huge difference in not tolerating someone because of their sex or religion and not tolerating someone because they are discriminating against others because of sex or religion... i am intolerant against all people who treat other people in a disrespectful way over nothing at all... race sex or religion... its not htis guys beliefs im against... it is his treatment of people, whatever the reason....if he was truly a devout hasidic jew he would be living in that community to avoid these things... but hes makin money and drawing attention to there message so he goest out on these tours to play for drugaddicted family abusers for money and it helps the create a stir shiit man it wont be long before youll see kids goin to school lookin like him... refusing to address female teachers..... hopefully him and mtv will take a long walk in the opposite direction of manchester

Keith, you still seem to be missing the point. Now, I don't personally know any Hasidic Jews, and I don't know what your friend told you. (Is he Hasidic, by the way?) So, I'm just going on what little I've been able to find online.

I did find one page that said this: "In the Hasidic hierarchy of values, women are accorded less importance than men."
I also found a page, written by a Hasidic Rabbi, that said this: "In general, Orthodox Jewish men and women do not shake hands or touch each other unless they are married, and then only in private. It is not that women are considered dirty or unclean as some people -- even some Jews -- wrongly think. Quite the opposite. It is because both men and women consider our bodies to be sacred and not for everybody else's gaze or touch."
And from a female writer's essay printed in the NY Times: "The women were a particular revelation. Instead of the oppressed drudges I'd expected, they turned out to be strong and energetic, raising large families and passing on beloved Jewish traditions, quite often in addition to holding down outside jobs. Not all of them had been born into this world: some were newly religious women, former Broadway dancers or scholars with advanced degrees who had now dedicated themselves to performing good deeds. The Rabbi's page (http://www.pinenet.com/rooster/hasid1.html) seemed directed at information; he speaks highly of a couple of women, and there is a link to an interesting interview with a Hasidic woman. Also, he does not degrade non-Hasidic Jews in any way that I could see.
I read another article about a Hasidic woman who is the principal of a school, open, and friendly to outsiders.
There are going to be different views within any religion, but from what I've read, I can't find centralized teachings that women are less than men.

The articles never said that he would refuse to address women. In fact, it said it was difficult for him because he would have to tell them no, but he wouldn't have the time to explain. It isn't that he can't speak to women, it is that he can't TOUCH women. He can't shake their hands; he can't land on them in a stage dive. And the thing that seems most significant to me is that if he was a Hasidic woman, the situation would be exactly reversed. He would not shake any man's hand. Just like, if I was a Hasidic woman, I could not shake your hand. That would not mean that I thought less of you.

I don't like or dislike of Matisyahu (I've never even heard a whole song of his), but from the articles about him and from the pages I've read, I'm not finding evidence that he, or his religion, systematically degrade women. Point me to some actual evidence to the contrary, and maybe you'll change my mind. As of now, if it doesn't conflict with something I want to see more, I might check out his show. And if I really want an autograph, I'll do as phishdrum suggested and get my boyfriend to get it for me.
