a person shouldnt get setup to be turned down for an autograph. He's made it clear enough.
even if he is signing autographs for others and refuses to do so for you simply because your female? either sign autographs for everyone or noone... none of this discrimination crap
alls im sayin is im a little upset that some of my friends and I are makin this cat richer while he disrespects my female friends.. u may not find it offensive.. but from this post alone you can see that there is a group that does find it offensive and i dont think we should have to support someone that treats people like that in order to attend an event that is built on peace and acceptance
but we can go back and forth forever on this topic.. i think almost every point has been made... so once again i think its one of those agree to disagree situations
and thats all ive got to say about that

The previous post was made by me, the one who started the thread, and never did I "ask about MTV fans" I was just making an observation about a particular song. But I do apologize. You did not make any "gross generalization" and it was incorrect to use that term. I am 100% behind you in the Trey and Phil prediction! On March 16th, I'll let you know about the crowd. Until then, let's try and get that karma raised! ;D
I don't agree with the law of not interacting with women. I do agree with him being able to practice it. I have a friend I've known since middle school. His cousin decided to become Muslim. When she did she could not talk to me, I wasn't in the family, and I could not see her hair, she had to have a shaw on when I came over. It was uncomfortable due to the fact that before I sat and chilled and talked with her, and one day I couldn't. I know she didn't like it either but she loved the religion and was happy, so I just did what I could to make sure I didn't make any smart remarks and act a fool about it. Once she was married she could talk to me but not touch me and a few other, what I see as odd, things. It was her choice to do it and I supported her then and now in the fact that she did and continues to do what she believes is right. As long as you do no harm to others I've got no problem with what you do. Yeah he can't sign a cd but he can't abuse a woman either. He'd following his heart and it's lead him to a better spot. I don't agree with some of it but I'm not gonna hate him either.
Amen just because you don't understand or agree with another culture or religion doesn't make it wrong in any way. He practices different cultural beliefs, thats all. Maybe he finds things you might do offensive it doesn't mean he is not going to play Bonnaroo. If it bothers you so much write a letter to him, or try to understand why his religion calls for him to do these things. Maybe you'll find a answer and be able to accept his beliefs whether you think they are right or wrong.
im completly accepting of him doin whatever he pleases... i just dont think he needs to be doin it at bonnaroo on my dollar... but it is my choice to give roo my money and im goin to anyways... this problem will solve itself... everyone who hears his stuff and loves it eventually either actually listen to it and dont like the anti drug or religous messages, or they still like it and start lookin for info and come across all of this intolerance nonsense and decide not to support him...and some people just like it..to each their own...but i have a feeling that he will have a small turn out ( mostly as a result of his sexist views) and that will be the last we see of him at roo... and as for the rest of his future i think the gimmick will wear off and he will melt like 12 inches of snow... he might be able to snowball this mtv madonna thing into a lucrative pop career...but thats about all i see in his future...we will see i guess

I don't think Matisyahu has anything against women the reason that men and women don't touch each other when they are Hasidic Jews is because both men and women consider their bodies to be sacred and not for everybody else's gaze or touch. It's a cultural difference not a sexist thing at all. One Love
You keep saying this, but it makes no sense. Sexism involves discrimination, which would indeed seem applicable for Matisyahu, on the surface. This thread has got to the root though and we've openly discussed of how it's a religious belief based on the contact of unmarried men and women. Somehow I don't think Hasidic women are itching to violate their religious standards anymore than than Hasidic men. You keep implying it's some sort of male domination, which certainly doesn't seem to be the case. His wife didn't touch him before marriage and he didn't touch his wife. This rule, no matter how odd it may seem to us, is something he follows to this day.

We understand that you don't agree with his religious beliefs, but there's no reason to totally misrepresent things....here is a quote from one of the links that you posted...
"It's hard to sign CDs and tell every other person that comes over to you some form of 'no,'" says Matisyahu. "And you don't have time to get into a discussion as to why you can't. It can come off as disrespectful."
No where in any of those articles does he ever say he has anything against women and/or thinks any less of them than men. You are simply jumping to conclusions without knowing the full story....hmmm, sounds familiar.

I can't believe this conversation is even going on. If you have someting against him, don't see him. But you don't see him not playing a show because of judgements he makes on his fans personal lives. Leave his personal life and beliefs out of this. Its about the muuuuusic. Come on now.
im not jumping to any conclusions.. i dont care how he met his wife opr what he does at home... what was said about that part was more out of curiosity then anythign else.... but the guy comes to roo.. refuses to play music with woman.. refuses to speak to women and in my minds eye ( you might not see it that way) he is discriminating against women... it dosent matter if it is his religion or even if he was just a discriminating not a very nice person..... when a female waits around after a show and sees him signing autographs and is unable to get one only for the reason of being female it is wrong.. she bought a ticket and a cd just like everyonelse... im sure that dosent make them feel very good...it dosent belong at roo imo....and he wouldnt explain it to them if he had the time because women are not even spoken to let alone a man explaining his actions to a woman.... maybe the guy should stick to playing all male shows at synagouges (sp?) and selling his cds there... oh wait there is no money in that... hes a gimmick and will go away... why dont you all go check out some legit info on the subject... it is not just some little quirk they have.. it is a systematic degredation of a womans self image....women are taught that they cannot touch holy books because they menstrate...hasidic jews say a prayer every morining in thanks for not being made a woman... they believe that everyone who is not a devout hasidic jew is a drug abuser, an alcoholic, that they beat and rape their families.. these are some backwards beliefs that they are free to have but do not belong at roo.... if i had a chance to question him on these topics i wouldnt do it unless my sister could interview him for me.....i dont know if this is what he is all about but he puts himself out there as a devout hasidic jew and that is what they are all about, and from everything that hes said and all of his actions it is pretty obvious thats what hes about..... i dont know how anyone can say this type of intolerance is acceptable at bonnaroo....and dont give me that your being intolerant crap.. because there is a huge difference in not tolerating someone because of their sex or religion and not tolerating someone because they are discriminating against others because of sex or religion... i am intolerant against all people who treat other people in a disrespectful way over nothing at all... race sex or religion... its not htis guys beliefs im against... it is his treatment of people, whatever the reason....if he was truly a devout hasidic jew he would be living in that community to avoid these things... but hes makin money and drawing attention to there message so he goest out on these tours to play for drugaddicted family abusers for money and it helps the create a stir shiit man it wont be long before youll see kids goin to school lookin like him... refusing to address female teachers..... hopefully him and mtv will take a long walk in the opposite direction of manchester

Damian Marley Road to Zion (featuring: Nas)

If there’s problem with Matisyahu just kick your reggae needs over to Damian Marley, he’s going to there also. Or are you just one of those kids who is always wanting someone to wipe they’re ass for them. Man enough of your negative rant. I understand that you can’t possibly understand the evil you have within your soul. Mellow out motherfucker, or better still, take your presents to another board, where they appreciate your constant negativity. People have reached out to you with acceptance, but you continue on with your need to be juvenile in your discussions. Dude, I’ve been on this board for a long time and there has never been a more negative motherfucker like you on this board, so just shut the fuck up and go somewhere else.
Straight up, You’re an evil person, Keep your mouth shut and try to learn,
Keith, how about you tell us where you're getting all these "facts" on Hasidic Judaism.
You started out as seeming rather unsure about the belief system. Now you've transformed yourself into some backwoods, one stop, poor man's human encyclopedia of theocracy.

no it is just that the more i looked into it the more i discovered about the way women are treated in his culture, and it just dosent gel with the culture at roo!!!! my grandfather is jehovas witness and spouts this crap all the time.. wouldnt see my son cuz hes a bastard... wont see my sister cuz she has tattoos... i love him deeply but would never take him to bonnaroo.... he also believes that everyone that is not j.w. is an infidel and does nothing but horrible things...im fine with that... he dont like my sister he stays away from her.. dont wanna see my son.. im fine with that... he dosent go to a place and take money from infidels with tattoos and then refuse to address them like the dignified human that they are... he lives in his society of non infidels and loves it... more power to him... i dont know why religious intolerance is accepted form a jewish guy with talent at bonnaroo... but islamic people cant do it in their own homeland...this has all been reduced to oh its just a cute little quirk and i dont see how it can be interpreted as that...im not the only person that feels hes sexist....its the same with all religious fanatics... christians, jews, muslims... all of the extremists think everyone else is an infidel for one reason or another... and as for the backwoods b.s. and all the mf'er talk im not hurling adjectives at you in an insulting fashion .... just because he is an mtv act dosent mean he is sweet and innocent...these people isolate themselves from society for a reason....oh well.. im not tryin to get into hatin on a religion.. no matter how backwards i think it is, i just wish it wasnt at roo... but discrimination is what it is no matter what the reason....so support him or dont i dont really care... but when my young mtv watching niece takes a liking to him i assure you i will be the first to explain to her that this cat wont talk to her or give her any acknowledgement because shes female and if she likes him knowing that hes above talking to her then cool... more power to her...my jewish friends feel abotu hasidics backwards beliefs as we look at the fanatics like ashcroft who think dancing is a sin, and by the way if ya dont like me dont fuckin talk to mewont be any skin off my nuts......and man look into it, pick up a book, talk to a jewish persont that is invovled with their faith... dont just say its nothing.. jus a cute little sexual quirk when you yourself are not at all informed, you dont have to take my word.. have an original thought... or dont i dont give a flyin fuk

i dont understand why everything has to automatically be a big fukkin deal.. i expressed an opinion.. it is a valid opinion that many people have.. women and african americans didnt gain their rights by saying oh its just the white mans belief system and accepting it.... they said fuckthis shiit and made a difference....acceptance of discrimination is as bad as discrimination
and look around.. i have many friendly and helpful posts... there have been two threads were things got all out fo control like this.. i guess forums are just not the place to have an opionionate and intelligent conversation.. there a couple that are capable of it but they get over ran by all the uninformed people with all of their uninformed perceptions they got off a cd and mtv.. hes cool so he cant be bad... oh well the rolling stone article dosent make it sound abd... i think they made it sound as bad as they could... comn it was mentioned in every article in some form or another... i think they brought attention to it as much as that type of publication can... if your getting your religion and womans rights info there you might wanna dig a little deeper... the reason i started out on a slighter note is because i was not completely informed... the more i learned the more upsetting i found the cultures treatment of women....my friend ma'er... formerly steve went to israel 3 times and his deeply involved in his faith... i talked with him at length abotu the subject today and also looked up as much info as i could on my own....maybe all of you should od the same instead of wasting your time being intolerant of someonelses opinion

There's a quick and easy solution to the problem of a female getting a signed cd: get a male friend to do it! Think of it in a similar way as procuring beer when you're under 21.

It's called projection...look into it, and deal with it....because you're obviously having an issue with it.
Keith, you still seem to be missing the point. Now, I don't personally know any Hasidic Jews, and I don't know what your friend told you. (Is he Hasidic, by the way?) So, I'm just going on what little I've been able to find online.
I did find one page that said this: "In the Hasidic hierarchy of values, women are accorded less importance than men." I also found a page, written by a Hasidic Rabbi, that said this: "In general, Orthodox Jewish men and women do not shake hands or touch each other unless they are married, and then only in private. It is not that women are considered dirty or unclean as some people -- even some Jews -- wrongly think. Quite the opposite. It is because both men and women consider our bodies to be sacred and not for everybody else's gaze or touch." And from a female writer's essay printed in the NY Times: "The women were a particular revelation. Instead of the oppressed drudges I'd expected, they turned out to be strong and energetic, raising large families and passing on beloved Jewish traditions, quite often in addition to holding down outside jobs. Not all of them had been born into this world: some were newly religious women, former Broadway dancers or scholars with advanced degrees who had now dedicated themselves to performing good deeds. After spending more time in homes like theirs, in Israel and later in America, I came to have a very different view of the haredi, known to outsiders as the ultra-Orthodox. " The Rabbi's page (http://www.pinenet.com/rooster/hasid1.html) seemed directed at information; he speaks highly of a couple of women, and there is a link to an interesting interview with a Hasidic woman. Also, he does not degrade non-Hasidic Jews in any way that I could see. I read another article about a Hasidic woman who is the principal of a school, open, and friendly to outsiders. There are going to be different views within any religion, but from what I've read, I can't find centralized teachings that women are less than men.
Also, you said in one of your posts, "he dosent go to a place and take money from infidels with tattoos and then refuse to address them like the dignified human that they are." The articles never said that he would refuse to address women. In fact, it said it was difficult for him because he would have to tell them no, but he wouldn't have the time to explain. It isn't that he can't speak to women, it is that he can't TOUCH women. He can't shake their hands; he can't land on them in a stage dive. And the thing that seems most significant to me is that if he was a Hasidic woman, the situation would be exactly reversed. He would not shake any man's hand. Just like, if I was a Hasidic woman, I could not shake your hand. That would not mean that I thought less of you.
I don't like or dislike of Matisyahu (I've never even heard a whole song of his), but from the articles about him and from the pages I've read, I'm not finding evidence that he, or his religion, systematically degrade women. Point me to some actual evidence to the contrary, and maybe you'll change my mind. As of now, if it doesn't conflict with something I want to see more, I might check out his show. And if I really want an autograph, I'll do as phishdrum suggested and get my boyfriend to get it for me.
--and sorry to continue the off topic conversation, LIGuy, you posted that while I was typing!

Keith - good question about 'tolerating intolerance," but I really don't see Matisyahu's views as so much intolerance. He's not trying to put down women, just avoiding women as his religion states - women of the same religion would be expected to do the same to men, but wouldn't say they are trying to hold back men... I would only call him intolerant if he was lashing out at people who don't believe the same as him, and he hasn't done that at all. I mean, he's playing Bonnaroo - he knows people aren't going to share his beliefs but he doesn't mind. That's not intolerance...
