So I have a few friends who have a leaked copy of this album. So far no of them are to excited about the album.
One said its 70's lite rock, another just didn't know what to think. None said it was good. I won't hear it till tonight but I wanted to know if any of you lips lovers on this board have heard it.
So far on about 10 listens only (and the other lips albums definitely grew on me on repeated listens), I think that the album is not as good as Soft Bulletin or Yoshimi. However, I am enjoying the album more and more and have gotten a couple of the songs stuck in my head for awhile, which is usually a good sign. I think that the lyrics are not as good as the previous two albums, however, if I accept them as "anthem" style lyrics then I feel that they are decent. The music seems to be more influenced by the 70's, and there is definitely a "Pink Floydish" song. But overall, this album does rock. If it was not by the Lips I would think that this is a great album, but since I am spoiled by their brilliance I just think that it is a decent album (Funny how expectations can distort things). I do want to say that there are plenty of great songs on here. More specifically, the vocal effects on the album are really interesting and I am ready to see the songs performed live to see how they pull off the new songs. And I would suggest listening to the album a couple times with some good headphones because there are plenty of layers that should be explored. Dammit, the Roo better get the Lips. Late night set ideally.
^^^The tracks I've heard remind me a lot of their pre-Soft Bulletin stuff. I dig it, but in the same way I dug Clouds Taste Metallic or Transmissions from a Satellite Heart. Which is to say, it's not as unexpectedly otherwordly as Soft Bulletin or Yoshimi. In fact, if you were to go back before their previous two releases and asked Lips fans what the band would sound like 10 years from now, At War With the Mystics wouldn't be far off. Is that a fair assessment?

I have to say, I haven't heard "At War with the Mystics" yet, and I love everything the Lips have ever put out. But I may love this album, because "Clouds Taste Metallic" is my absolute favorite Lips album. I don't know why. I really dig "Soft Bulletin" and "Yoshimi" but there's something about "Clouds" that just works wonders for me. Anyway, yea, Go Lips. Hope they're at Bonnaroo but, if not, I've already got my Lollapalooza tickets.

Yeah, that is a fair assessment. I would say that the songs are more lush and full, but that is the sign of a band progressing.
I also think that the new album is the Lips going back to their acid roots. However, there are a couple of tracks that sound like Yoshimi and the Soft Bulletin. It's like they're allowing the Earlies and My Morning Jacket, etc. to carry on with the Soft Bulletin tradition while they explore other avenues. However, I do think it's better than Yoshimi because it takes more chances, rather than sticking to one style until it gets slow and old.
By the way, here is a small review of a recent Lips performance at SXSW.
"When Flaming Lips finally hit the stage, the place was packed to capacity. Wayne incited the audience to make as much noise as possible during the show, as it would enhance the recording. They smartly worked the audience into a frenzy by kicking off with a cover of "Bohemian Rhapsody." The room quickly filled with large bouncing balloons and confetti, which are by now to be expected. The line-up was more basic rock band than I had seen them do in years, with live drums, bass, guitar, and keyboards in effect. The new originals from the forthcoming At War with the Mystics, like "Free Radical" and "Yeahyeahyeah Song," played out amazingly well live, and the already-leaked nature of the album was belied by the boisterous audience sing-along. Wayne was, as always, a gracious master of ceremonies, making the whole affair thoroughly enjoyable and setting the bar high for any subsequent performers."
I don't think it sounds anything like Clouds Taste Metallic.
It's like some sort of career retrospective in that it touches on all their different sounds. There are a few departures, but overall it feels like a summary of their past experiments. That's not to say that there aren't some stellar songs, but I don't think it holds up quite as well as TSB, TFTSH, or their other stunners.

i was walking home listening to at war with the mystics today and after it finished i went right into transmissions from a satellite heart and they really fit together well. the new album is really more in that vein. i've never listened to clouds before so i don't know about that.
i'm just glad it is not similiar to mr. ambulance driver. when i heard that i was worried.
oh yeah i forgot to say that i really like the new stuff and i can't wait to see them in a week!
I guess I might be a rare case but I liked it after the first listen. Definitely more adventurous than the last couple albums - I think I'm gonna be a huge fan of this album.
I got the leaked version (still intending to buy the complete released version when available) and so far i really enjoy it...It did take a few listens...But, once i saw the Lips play the yeahyeahyeah song, free radicals, and a few others off their new album down at Langerado a few weeks back, it became a lot better somehow. That lips concert was the most influential concert i have ever seen, it was crazy! I dont see how u can say that the lips are following my morning jacket? But, i just wish the guys at superfly and AC entertainment would check this board and see how much the lips are needed at Bonnaroo...And, after those additions to wakarusa, Bonnaroo needs to do somethin to pull more people in.

I have to say this Flaming Lips album is everything I expected from a Flaming Lips album...
Nothing that I expected.
I do like it, filled to the brim with Psych pop goodness
OK so I love the line in Haven't Got A Clue that goes "everytime you state your case the more I want to punch your face." I can just imagine a nice video with a bunch of Mr. Bush clips and right wing conservative freaks telling people what they can and can't do, who they can and can't sleep with...
Then the W.A.N.D. talks about "now is the time all those fanatical minds try to rule all the world, telling us all its them who's in charge of it all"
I dont see how u can say that the lips are following my morning jacket?
I didn't mean that the Lips are following MMJ, just the opposite. The Earlies and MMJ are going with a more straightforward interpretation of the Lips sound, which frees up the Lips to go crazy on the new album. If you like the Lips, you have to check out that Earlies album. It's incredible.
