I acknowledge that there is a significant shift in the types of artists announced this year,
, I have yet to hear any reason why I should expect anything different this year.
ummm ok
I should have added that I try not to make judgements about people I don't know but when I do its not based on how they dress or their taste in music. The first sentence quoted above was about the artists. The second sentence was about the "vibe" of the people attending.

dress style and music preferences are not the criteria for judgment... it is the actions of those who attend main stream events.... hopefully everything goes off without a hitch... but i think we could see a rise in littering, porta potty abuse, theft, fighting, etc....maybe i am completely wrong but as for the concerts i have been to, the more mainstream the band the more problems there will be... i guess we will have to wait and see

I agree with this. The more mainstream the show the more people go just to go and drink and not watch the show and listen to the music.
I don't think we will have any trouble with fans this year. The lineup isn't that crazy.
yup, dunno bout the death cab fans (as i dont know any death cab fans) but im not too worried about the radiohead fans. every radiohead fan i know is really cool and has great taste in music. ive never been into them much till recently having hearing one of thier live recordings, but my dude whos taste in music i would trust over my own says it was one of the, if not the, best shows hes ever seen.
dont know if that is the "mainstream" your talkin bout but i think the radioheaders will be a welcome addition

I honestly don't understand why you act like there are so many mainstream bands at Bonnaroo this year as opposed to previous years. Let's review: Radiohead Tom Petty Beck Death Cab
That's... about... it. Radiohead isn't even big when it comes to mainstream, with the the exception of "Creep" (which even Radiohead themselves hate). Tom Petty may be mainstream, but he's TOM PETTY, for God's sake. Beck, once again, may be mainstream, but he is talented and most his fans aren't these 'mainstream idiots' you're making them out to be. Death Cab are just now hitting the mainstream and have a bigger indie following, even if they aren't the greatest band in the world.
And what about these jam bands you adore? I can't even begin to count how many idiot stoner kids I remember walking through my high school halls with Grateful Dead shirts on and this was only two years ago.
Honestly, stop spreading the hate, man. Almost all of your posts have been rants about how mainstream fans are going to invade and destroy Bonnaroo as we know it, spreading bad vibes and all that... when, really, you're the one spreading the bad vibes. Please, lay off that nonsense.

it is mostly death cab, matisyahu, american idols...... but it used to be that those bands werent enough to draw in the "mainstream element" and radiohead by its self wouldnt either.. but put em all together, and even tom pettyand beck are in this boat(although i cant wait to see both of them) and i think there will be a larger amount of insurgency ... i know that most of the fans of these bands are just like everyone else, but i think we are getting closer and closer to the 1 percenters of that crowd start affecting the scene... maybe not this year but soon if this trend continues...its inevitable.. something is only cool until the people that are incapable of recognizing cool have it pointed out to them, and then mtv and american idol types "invade and destroy"

While I'll admit I dislike Death Cab, Matisyahu, and the American Idols, I honestly can't see many people shelling out 180 bucks (plus cost of travel, food, etc. which rounds it up to anywhere between 300-600 bucks) to see them and 80 other bands they've never heard of.

well put....... once again im not insulting anyone... if you dont smear crap on porta pottys or steal from campsites and litter and fight then i am not refering to you... the fact is that these problems exist and they are associated with a certain type of fan... not all of these people are bad but the small portion that are ruin it for the rest...every difering opinion is not an attack on your own.... settle down there chief

I understand that your opinion is your own and not an attack on me. However, what I don't understand is why you're so concerned about more of these fans coming to Bonnaroo this year than previous years. Bonnaroo 2005 was host to DMB, Joss Stone, Modest Mouse, De La Soul, AND Matisyahu. It went fine, didn't it?
As for the quote: I like jam bands, including the Grateful Dead, but these kids were just as bad as the jocks and the goths when it came to causing trouble, be it at school or be it outside of school. Whose to say that jam band fans aren't just as guilty as mainstream music fans?

well i think the fact that there has never been any problems at bonnaroo or 10klf would speak to that and at the main stream fests there has been fighting, destruction of venues/concert goers property, theft, fires, and all sorts of other nonsense...not eevery fest or everyone all the time but some of the people... and the 2004 roster contributed too... i have mentioned specific acts from 04 ...its an accumulating effect... we might just have to agree to disagree

Touche. However, one again, this is not a mainstream fest. We have, at tops, 5 mainstream bands that will be playing just like in past years. If this were a mainstream fest, such as Woodstock '99, we would be having more mainstream bands than you can count on one hand(Woodstock '99 had 20+).
I think you're right. We're just going to have to agree to disagree. Good argument though.

right right...i think maybe its the positions they are filling this year... tom petty, beck, radiohead are all main stage acts, when has there everbeen that many bands on the main stage with videos on mtv....and youve still got the compliment of lower stage bands, its definetly more then years past... and again i am happy as hell about beck and tom petty.. never seen either of them and they wer e both on my"before i die list" but they do draw from that mainstream pool
ya and i do enjoy the "arguing" differnet sides of the issue so thank you for not just flaming with out a point, so thanx for the conversation

Bonnaroo 2004 was host to DMB, Joss Stone, Modest Mouse, De La Soul, AND Matisyahu
I think you mean 2005. Having seen Matisyahu three times in the past two years, his progression from unknown reggae artist to MTV star shows how a "mainstream" audience can, in some situations, ruin a really good thing. The first time I saw Matisyahu was at the Bob Marley Fest in Austin. Hardly anyone knew about him and he was great. The second time was when he opened for Trey at the first show of the summer tour in Boston. That was even better than the first time because there was only about 50 people in the theater which had seating for about 2,000. He had just released Live at Stubbs. Since the release of the live album, the King Without a Crown video and single, and the new album Youth, there was a marked difference in the crowd when I saw him two weeks ago. Everyone around me was either talking to their buddies, on their phone, or sitting for the majority of the show -- except when "King Without a Crown" was playing, of course. The difference between the first show crowd and the last show crowd was so drastic, there was little evidence that the same artist was performing. Melikecheese got it exactly right:
The more mainstream the show the more people go just to go and drink and not watch the show and listen to the music.
The is exactly the case for Matisyahu, and I'm afraid may be more evident at this Bonnaroo too.
Frankly, this year is barely as mainstream as last year's line-up was. Do I need to remind you how many DMB fans exist on this planet? Not to mention the popularity of such artists as The Black Crowes, Jack Johnson, Joss Stone and Modest Mouse to name a few from '05. What's great about bonnaroo is that when you finally arrive on that magical farm, all your preconceptions, all your hate, everything negative about your personality that might otherwise be prominent, seems to disappear. The general feeling/atmosphere consumes any evil that was otherwise lurking inside you. In other words, bonnaroo is a more powerful force than the potentially negative attitudes of a few DCFC fans.

i dont think the black crowes draw too many mainstreamers...jack johnson maybe a little but its jack, i dont think him and dave draw as many mainstreamers as they are made out to...whens the last time ya saw either of them on mtv ( i dont watch it except for beavis and butthead and jackass.. so im not actually sure, maybe a stand up video?)and everyone loves to hate on dave and his fans...granted i have only seen him at roo and never at a college venue i dont see what the deal is... i dont know of many youngsters that are rockin dave....he may draw some mainstream but i think hes more of a non mainstream act that is just incredibly well known, maybe im just biased because he fuckin rocked roo hard twice.... he definetly had the largest turnouts ive seen at roo... i think he doubled up wsp last year... i like dave and i think he puts on a hell of a show....

DMB gets pretty heavy circulation on MTV when a new album comes out, from what I've heard. I took my ex to go see DMB a few years back and it was pretty horrendous. The crowd was your typical there-to-get-drunk fratboys sprinkled with their dates and a few mothers who must have wandered in off the street.
Obviously Bonnaroo does hate me. Otherwise they wouldn't keep me in such suspense. But today is another day and it is still early, so I will say to myself like I always do "I'm sure there will be an announcement today".
Thank goodness for the reasonable people on this board. I must admit that I was one of the people several years ago that bitched up a storm when Dave and Friends were added because I thought that he would bring in the drunk frat boys and bring down the whole vibe of the show. And I don't even go to see the "jam bands." Most years I really couldn't care less about the headliners, but I didn't want "big names" because I just wanted to keep the same people coming to roo that I met the first year because everyone was so incredible. However, I was wrong about Dave bringing in the "wrong" sorts of people and so is anyone who really thinks that Radiohead fans are destructive idiots. Look, you can't get any more mainstream than the folks I knew growing up (including my sis and bro) and I think they've only heard of these headliners (including Petty even) in passing. They don't listen to this music. They listen to the crappola that's put on the radio by clearchannel. The people who are coming to the fest and dropping the money to be in Manchester are coming because they love a variety of music and are interested in experiencing music they've never heard before. One of the reasons why I believe the people who attend festivals like Roo are so fantastic is because they tend to be open minded and accepting. Don't ruin it by shutting your mind to the possibility that those of us who love Radiohead and Beck can contribute something to the scene. Because I do love these bands and I have attended every roo except 05 (due to scheduling conflicts) and I would never do anything to bring down the peaceful vibe of bonnaroo.

I'm pretty sure announcements are always on Wednesdays. So if there isn't one tomorrow, start sending hate mail. Oh, and there are still 2 and half months left, be patient.

I don't want to put you down or anything; but none of the announcements this year have come on wednesday. We've gotten two on thursday and one on friday. I think we're getting kind of antsy because Rounds 1 and 2 came so close together, they should have been one announcement (there was less than 24 hours between additions 1 and 2). As far as I am concerned we've only gotten two rounds of artist additions. I know bonnaroo is still a good way away (79 days!), but by this time last year we already had more bands announced. Gimme more bands! I'm greedy when it comes to music.

This was really good to read. Lsst year was my first Bonnaroo. Call me mainstream or whatever but i tend to listen to harder music like tool and Volta and heavier stuff. But I love the vibe of Bonnaroo, I can't see how you can get mad once your there. Ive never been in a more social enviroment in my life. Everyone I know though that listens to Radiohead listens to some real good music and are some definite "Heads". With that being said I think they will fit in with the jam band "Heads" really well and Bonnaroo will be great again. Write me hate-mail if you want but I did not like WSP or DMB headlinig last year but it didnt ruin my time. I discovered Xavier Rudd, Citizen Cope,Rose Hill Drive, and lots of others. Point being I think the new people will be people with an open mind looking to find some new styles of music. Sorry for the rambling.
I totally hear what you guys are saying about those damn Death Cab For Cutie fans... they are completely out of control. I've been to a few DCFC shows and I can honestly say I was scared for my personal safety. If I were a parent of a teenager, no way I'd let them go to one of their shows - who knows if they'd come back hurt, raped, or even dead?! And it's pretty much common knowledge that many DCFC fans have horrible hygiene and like to smear their feces all over the place, especially porta-potty seats and walls. They're just so loud and obnoxious, and I think it stems from those lyrics that they hear at their shows that incite them to act out with hostility. Hell just last week I saw a couple kids wearing Death Cab t-shirts beat the sh!t out of a whole group of Limp Bizkit fans right there on the sidewalk, and I'm not even kidding. I think it's some sort of gang warfare thing. Who knows, what these kids and their mtv-warped brains are thinking. certainly not about the environment, because they use mother earth as their own personal wastecan...
Superfly made a huge mistake by bringing in DCFC because it seems to go against the calm, clean, peaceful vibe that Bonnaroo is supposed to be all about. It will only take a few of their annoying fans to ruin those whole event for the rest of us...
