Whether it's your first Bonnaroo or you’re a music festival veteran, we welcome you to Inforoo.
Here you'll find info about artists, rumors, camping tips, and the infamous Roo Clues. Have a look around then create an account and join in the fun. See you at Bonnaroo!!
Last year the DVD came out in May. I think the CD came out in April but I'm pretty sure we had heard something about it by now. The only reason I could think they wouldn't have one would be if Katrina's affect on Superfly's home base had something to do with it.
I haven't heard the DVD or CD cancelled at all... and I think there would be news of that. There was essentially NO news of the DVD or CD until April last year.
I think last year's... but I have a caveat... my favorite single disc is the one they gave to Krewe of Roo members last year - it's a 3rd disc to go with the other two from 2004-- it has some (60%) overlap material, but much more backstage and atmospheric material. I think it's very cool and special (and of the same production value as before).
For those of you that have seen multiple dvd's, which one is the best? I have them all in my netflix que, but I'm not sure which one to get first.
I should add....best as in overall production and entertainment value....not necessarily just which year had your favorite bands.
Thanks!
I definitely agree with iskew on the '04 Krewe of Roo freebie, its easily the best Bonnaroo DVD I have. It was titled "We Have Arrived" and I think was a small scale theatrical release. The highlight is MMJ's thunderstorm set closer. Unfortunately its not commercially available.
For something you can actually buy, the short answer is that I would say '04 is as good a choice as any. Long answer:
As a Bonnaroo fan and music fan, I love, cherish and frequently watch the first three years DVDs. As a concert movie afficianado, they all are mediocre imo. Basically they all feature full songs intercut with little snippets about the scene. I would much rather see a one hour or so film about the scene and a huge collection of performances, but none of them are set up this way.
I really hate the presentation of the '03 DVD. It commits the cardinal sin of concert movies and doesn't match the video to the audio. While you are hearing Ben Harper play a song, you are seeing a montage of shots from throughout his set (playing different instruments, first standing, now sitting etc.). Doesn't work at all for me. Highlights for me are MMJ and Polyphonic Spree. I think the Lips song doesn't do a great job of capturing the vibe of that show, but maybe that's impossible.
The '02 and '04 DVDs are solid if you are into the music and/or Bonnaroo. I've watched the Trey song from '02 quite a bit and it always takes me right back. I think MMJ is the highlight of the '04 DVD as well.
Basically I think they all have a lot of great music, with acceptable presentation (great sound in all cases) with the except of the crappy editing in '03. They all have little snippets about what the scene is like but none of it really does it justice. They capture the vibe of the daytime sets and the closers sets pretty well, but for whatever reason they never seem to have much on the late night tents and when they do its not that great. Someone on the Bonnaroo archive board thingy already mailed superfly and superfly replied that for '05 they only released those soundboards, there will be no DVD. Major
02 DVD is the best. hands down, IMO. its got tons of extra footage of campers, arials, setting up the farm & stages, the first Rooers ever, and tons of other stuff. and the performances and camera angles are top-notch (thats not to say that 03 and 04 werent, they just focused totally on the songs) if your gonna rent 'em, watch 02 first, no doubt.
and as it stands right now, there will be no 05 DVD. the company, Third Wave was emaild by a Listserv loyalist and was told that "Superfly did not produce a DVD from the 05 Fest. Only audio downloads." im hoping that another company besides 3rd Wave has made a DVD.

I just checked this out on the listserv, and it looks like it was the DVD production company (third wave) that offered this response. It is an official word, but maybe there is an outside shot that Bonnaroo is working with another company and this company is out of the loop(?). Hopefully? It's definitely discouraging and if it turns out to be the case its a boneheaded move on Superfly's part imo.

I've got the "We Have Arrived" thing on my dvd. And the MMJ thunderstorm set. Or maybe that was on something I saw on TV. Either way, its not a (s)Krewe exclusive.
As for the '05 DVD, CD, Download Output: It SUCKS!
No DVD?! No CD?! A handful of downloads?
At the very LEAST, Bonnaroo should require the headliners to make their sets available for download.
... boy, this has been a pretty negative reply... LESS THAN THREE MONTHS UNTIL BONN-O-SIX!!!
Krewe Of Roo was a complete clusterfu*k and the administration did next to nothing. That's a short answer as to why it disappeared. If you'd like to find some of the refugees (including myself), check out JamFanForum.com -- it's well run and, like I said, has a lot of the same folks.
Back on track though...I'll be fu*king pissed if there's no 2005 dvd.
This news about the lack of a 2005 DVD makes me sick. I was really looking forward to it.
Last year was my first year at the Roo. For those of you who had been there for other years, did you see more or less video cameras in '05? I'm just trying to find some hope that some other company will produce a DVD.
I really wouldn't get mad or sweat it yet. I think they went with another company, that's all. They've made lots of little changes like that as they learn how to do this festival (dropping Krewe, lowering population...etc).
I'm gonna cry. No DVD? No CD? What the hell is going on here?! I know they couldn't of sold that many DVD to make a huge profit on them but still. This is some crap and I'm praying to the music gods that it is wrong.
Wow I really can't understand why the hell they would not make a DVD, I mean it makes no sense from the money-making side of things at all. That totally sucks, I was looking forward to it.

We should start a petition about it. I think its crap if there not going to put out a dvd and cd at least release more soundboards. PETION FOR 2005 CD AND DVD who's with me.
