I read on the Neville Brothers web site that they are doing a New Orleans tour with Dr.John and Wynton Marsalis that runs through Bonnaroo. I can't say I am itching to see Wynton, but there seems to be a possibility of seeing him either having his own set or maybe this late night NO jam that we have been speculating. Any thoughts on him?
I can't imagine him being able to hold down his own set, but a set with someone else or as a guest would probably be worth seeing. Of course I've never seen him play so I could be wrong about that. I have to think that with the Neville Bros and Dr. John playing, a major jazz/blues artist will be added - be it Marsalis, BB King (as I posted elsewhere), or someone else. I guess we'll have to wait and see...
wynton can definitely hold down his own set. he is one of the great jazz musicians of our generation. jazz might not necessarily be what you are into, but i have seen wynton twice and he is great live. that being said, i listen to a lot of jazz: old school coltrane, monk, miles etc., up through russell gunn, joshua redman, roy hargrove, and mmw. wynton can hang with them all. i would be very pleased to hear that he is coming to manchester.

Don't get me wrong, I'm very familiar with him and his music. I just don't think bonnaroo is the right place for 2 hours of nothing but trumpet featured jazz/classical - that seems better suited for a concert hall type venue. To get into the more outdoor festival feel you've got to throw in some other musicians and have wynton do solos to their stuff - thats what I was feeling.

I've heard several shows he's played with the Grateful Dead and I have no doubt there is no one playing at Bonnaroo that he couldn't sit in with and just rip it up. A big, funky Nawlins jam session would definitely be a weekend highlight!
