Radiohead reveal 'terrifying' new album April 3, 2006 08:13 AM - Posted by Jonathan
Thom Yorke has compared writing for Radiohead's new album to that on 'OK Computer' - but has declared the lyrics will be even more terrifying!
The group are recording with new producer Mark 'Spike' Stent (who has worked with Keane, Madonna and Oasis in the past) and in a world exclusive interview, Yorke said that despite rumours that the follow-up to 'Hail To The Thief' will have a political feel, in fact the opposite is true.
He said: "It's about that anonymous fear thing, sitting in traffic, thinking, 'I'm sure I'm supposed to be doing something else'. Interestingly enough it's similar to 'OK Computer' in a way. It's much more terrifying. But 'OK Computer' was terrifying too -some of the lyrics were."
Up to 16 tracks are being considered for the band's next album, with current favourites including 'Nude', '15 Step', 'Arpeggi' and 'House Of Cards'.
Next month fans will have the first chance to hear the songs on a European tour, which will visit Blackpool Empress Ballroom (May 12-13), Wolverhampton Civic Hall (15-16) and London Hammersmith Apollo (18-19) in the UK.
Writing on his diary at Radiohead.com, Yorke had previously said that the band are "finally getting somewhere", and are optimistic about getting the songs right for the tour.
"Listening back to things we are doing and looking through the lyrics today and stuff it feels like we are finally getting somewhere", he explained. "There are lots of songs. Too many to get together straight away. So we will be furiously rehearsing and writing as we go.
"I think we've always worked best when we aren't bothered about making mistakes. Theres a lot of baggage about the old way of doing things that is hard to get over... all the 'album' crap. Just this level of pressure that is ridiculous. We're just going to do what feels right at the time. Quite into the idea of singles at the moment (that don't get on the radio). No grand design... wherever we are at. Some of the random stuff we have at the moment could be the most exciting."
For the full world exclusive Radiohead interview check this week's NME on sale nationally from April 5.
Glad to know we will be hearing some of Radiohead's new material!
I'm excited for the new album. I know a lot of people are going to think I'm crazy for saying this, but I never really listened to Radiohead until this past weekend. My boyfriend played me OK Computer and Hail To The Theif and I was blown away. I had no idea how crazy they were!
A friend of mine said that Radiohead was the best concert he's ever been to.

just the name of this thread makes me want to do cartwheels. a new radiohead and a new pearl jam album (which is also getting crazy "buzz") coming out within a few weeks of each other. i am going to be one happy camper.
The NME interview with Thom Yorke & Colin Greenwood is now available. Here are some bits and pieces from the interview. Thom & Colin explain the silence after the Coachella festival (May 2004).
Thom: "I personally wanted to get out of the whole thing for a while, but you discover fairly quickly that you get the horrors. Because you're sitting there going "OK, errr, well I could go and get a normal job or I could go back and do that." It's not a difficult choice. You realise very quickly that you're in a very privileged position. Sitting there on your hands is a foolish thing to do."
Did everyone feel that way?
Colin: "If you're doing anything that's important or confronting, you're going to get the fear. Ed was the same, he felt that Radiohead was just baggage that he didn't need."
Is it always like this when you've had a break?
Thom: "Sometimes I just get shi t-scared, which is stupid really, because the whole point of starting up again like this is to get away from that. Normally by this point in recording we should have stopped. But we chose not to stop because the point about us is the hanging out together and sharing ideas."
"Personally, one of the things I find hardest is being part of the whole Radiohead thing" admits Thom, "and I'm not really interested in that anymore. I'm trying to work out what exactly it is that keeps me wanting to do it. None of us really want to be part of that band, like that anymore, just because it's a particular monster. And you don't want to be in this situation where you're just feeding the monster. It should be the other way around, whatever that means!"
They do plan to sign a record deal eventually, but on their own terms, and not until the album is finished and they've got something to show for their efforts.
Thom: "I think it's a nutty situation to be in to have no definite release system. It's really liberating not to feel part of the record company structure. It should be an extremely positive place to be in but it's also an extremely strange situation to be in. One of the things you discover really quickly when you discover you're not committed to anything is that you need some level of commitment because otherwise you just start fucking about, which is what we did for ages."

well thats kind of depressing, i guess it is bound to happen sometime..i wonder how much longer they will be together. although Thom has been talking like that since OK Computer came out.

Yeah - he always talks like that...i pretty much everything they say in interviews with a grain of salt ...though it will end sometime...i think those comments are probably somewhat out of context as well...when i read it it, it sounds like the problem thom and ed have with radiohead is that it is "radiohead" and with that name comes a huge amount of expectations/responsibility....they probably find that to be a huge weight to carry

There was a post in Dead Air Space that implies that things were taken out of context. I don't think it's anything to worry about....they're making a new album, they have to lose it a bit.
