Call me crazy here, but I would say that Bright Eyes is one of the more .... hmm.... different bands playing at Bonnaroo this year.
I think they are great; they came to Indiana University in Novemebr and my girlfriend took me (she is their biggest fan; she LOVES them) and I thought they were great!
However, seeing them added to Bonnaroo made me think "hmm are they going to be accepted by the Bonnaroo cult following"?
I am anxious to see what the crowd is like for them

I'm super excited for Bright Eyes. I saw them twice and both times Conor was completely wasted, which made it pretty funny. I think that once people see them live, they'll get a different view of them. They really don't play that much "emo-i-wanna-kill-myself" type of music as everyone thinks.
I've been so back and forth on Bright Eyes for the past two years and Bonnaroo has only made it all the more befuddling. I really don't like Conor Oberst's voice, it pains me, and unfortuantly the "emo-i-wanna-kill-myself" that Tonar referred to seems to shine through on the sudio stuff. This, coupled with the disturbing number of emo kids i see, has turned be away from their music. I do have a good amount of respect for it, however; the band does play other kinds of music, and theit range is good. Oberst's lyrics are quite exceptional at times, and he seems to have passion in what he does. I've heard good stuff about Bright Eyes live, and am certainly going to give them a shot. Hopefully they'll avoid the somber sound and stir-u some noise. While I too would think a tent more applicable, I feel like Bright Eyes will get a stage. Their billed pretty high on that artist list and (hopefully without stirring up too much noise), they're a little mainstream. At least from the college perspective, I'd say the majority of 18-25 year olds know who Bright Eyes is. At least on my campus, more kids could name a Bright Eyes song than a Costello song, which is a little sad. If Bright Eyes does end up in a tent, it will probably draw too large a crowd to hear everything (Keller last year? I didn't see every tent show, but I feel like that was the most packed one; I was lucky to be under the very corner of the tent, but I think more people were outside the tent then under it).

bright eyes imo is good. he writes good lyrics, theres a little emo in there but thats because he's been recording since he was fifteen and everyone was a little emo in their teen years. he doesn't play much of the emo stuff live though. it should be intersting to see how the crowd reacts to him or who shows up
I saw Bright Eyes at the Bridge School concert last year where everyone plays acoustic and he was fantastic! It was mid-afternoon, the sun was shining and he was sober. He even had Emmylou Harris come out and sing with him.

I've been lucky enough to go to five Bridge School concerts since I live in the Bay Area. The Chili Peppers have played there a couple of times. Two years ago when Paul McCartney played, everyone came out at the finale, including the Peppers, Sonic Youth, Neil Young and Ben Harper, to sing Hey Jude. I was in the 5th row and I could see Anthony Kedis crying with joy. It was a sureal experience, especially with all the Bridge School kids on the stage.

his lyrics and voice are quite incredible....people are calling him the new Bob Dylan (flame-worthy???) I know I have heard that from multiple sources...
Post by poopzilla33 on Apr 12, 2006 14:27:04 GMT -5
i've heard it too and i disagree compeltly. he is very good and i liek him a lot but imo he can not be compared to dylan. in five years i will ask myself again if he can be described as the new dylan, but right now imo he is just avery good artist who i am excited to see
imo NO ONE who's still in his twenties can be compared to dylan...but i think you have to admit that they have similar lyrical styles and if not similar then at least similarly unpopular/unpleasing voices
Anyone calling Bright Eyes the new Bob Dylan is dersrving of some kind of flaming. Those are ridiculous accusations. It isn't very likely there will ever be another "Bob Dylan" in the same regards that there will be another Beatles or Miles Davis. Bright Eyes's lyrics are good, but not nearly that good, and the sound hasn't proven itself that dynamic, or time tested. I could keep ranting for days about this, but I'll stop.
I Love Bob Dylan.

His ambition outweighs his talent as far as I'm concerned. His music tends to come of as didactic and overbearing. He seems to invite cultish following among fans as well which also bothers me. That said, he's made a couple listenable albums and is probably worth catching live at roo. he just tends to remind me of some of the more dangerous dostoevsky characters...

If you ignore all the ridiculous comparisons, misconceptions, and stupid labeling, he's pretty wonderful. His past three LPs have been very solid, with IWAIM being ond of the more gratifying albums in recent memory. The stuff recorded when he was really young -- well -- sounds like it was recorded when he was really young. Unaffected Conor listening is nearly impossible. It's kind of sad really. Oh well, having never caught him live, I'm looking forward to his set a whole lot. Yeah, I really am.
I tossed this live Bright Eyes disc in the mix with a few more (Bonnie Prince Billy, Songs:Ohia, Beulah, Whiskeytown) albums tonight and it sounded as good as ever. It's far from earth moving, but a great little collection that only makes me more eager for June.
