Wow. I've finally given their album the spin it deserves and I have to say I can't fuckking wait until I see them live!
Surprisingly I've never really listened to any of their individual works, so I didn't really know what I was missing. I can understand why you guys are so excited now.

Eh, as far as Oysterhead goes, I like a couple of their songs. It's half and half. Half the songs are great while the other half, to me, are boring and repetitive.
Though, I've never been able to get into any of Les Claypool's projects. =/ I respect the guy, but I hate almost everything he's ever done.
That being said, I'll probably go see them if there isn't something else I like playing.

Just dont forget that Oysterhead is more of a Les band than a Trey band... Its gunna be a hell of a show but dont expect blaring trey solos the whole time...

I guess I got a diffferent impression from the one show I saw in '01 (I haven't listened to a lot of other shows or anything). I definitely wouldn't consider it more of a Les band than a Trey band. Les certainly handles the majority of the vocals, and when he's singing it does sound more "Les" than anything else, but vocals are not really the main focus with Oysterhead imo. When there aren't vocals going (which is the majority of the time) I really felt like it was a three way split as far as who was dominating/defining/contributing to the sound. I actually think it almost seemed competitive between the three of them trying to one-up each other.
To put it another way, I'm in the "I respect and admire Les but he's not really up my alley taste-wise" camp, and I absolutely love Oysterhead. Of course that's mainly because Trey and Stewart Copeland are two of my favorite musicians.
I thought the album was fun when it came out, but to be honest I probably didn't touch it for 3 or 4 years until the Bonnaroo announcement. It's definitely more Les-dominated than the live show imo, and it definitely has some fun stuff on it, but I always thought of it more as a vague reminder of the amazing, mind-blowing, ridiculously fun show I saw than an especially good album.
I think It's funny people say Oysterhead is a Les-controlled band. That is not the impression I came away with after their first tour. Oysterhead is, in every sense of the word, a power-trio. It's not a Les band. It's not a Trey band. It's not Stu's band. The TGPO tour back in 01 was a fun tour, because I likened it to the May 99 Trey tour with his Trio. However, instead of 1 alpha-dog and 2 subordinates, in Oysterhead you have 3 alpha-dogs competing for equal space. Trey dominates just as much as Les. Stu even steps up to the front during parts of the show like in Radon Balloon.
Les is unquestionably an acquired taste, but like Trey Anastasio, he is a technical genius on his instrument and does things other people don't do. The man can shred. He's quirky and a goofball, but there's a reason he's been at every Roo.
Walking out of the Oysterhead shows I saw I felt like there was an equal effort on the part of all 3 musicians. Trey stands out leading the charge alot, and Les does not back down. If you've seen bands like Primus or the Frog Brigade, Les backs down a little more in Oysterhead than in his own bands, leaving room for Trey, b/c Trey has the tendency to play so many notes. Les can play alot notes, too, but In Oysterhead, his style tends to move away from the controlling, speedy, heavy lead, to a more groove-based jamming, leaving more room for not only the guitar but the drums as well.
"but dont expect blaring trey solos the whole time..."
I respectfully disagree to the point where I will say that you should EXPECT Trey to shred, because that's what he does in Oysterhead. It's a far heavier project than anything he's done to date.

Amazing trio, but not as amazing as it is on paper, but i missed them last time around, so i wouldn't miss it, but also wouldn't make an effort to see a tour, as there is not the chemistry of phish, or the asskickingness of primus. Poor stewart, He is great, but it is so hard for a drummer to stand out in anything but metal and some latino beats, the best are so good, they have no need to show off, but they must have the highest suicide rate of most musicians.

Sounds cool, i stand corrected... I've never seen them myself and i only have 2 or 3 of their shows so you guys would know better than me... I guess i wouldnt say "Les controlled" but he does come off as the front man to me... Although they are all three such big names its silly to put one over the other, they really are a dreamteam collaberation of sorts... Cant f*cking wait!
Augustwest, I dont get it... What are you trying to say?
after listening to one of the live shows i think les sets the pace alot of the time but trey trey doesnt hold back any. maybe more rock-out jamming and less spacey trey jamming though. but i think they really do have some good chemistry (i am oysterhead, blue ginger) and a fair amount of ass kicking. maybe not the chemistry of phish or the asskicking of primus but its not really a fair comparisson, its like a whole different entity that has some of the good parts from both. and ya stewarts good too.
when i first heard the album though i thought it was good but i definitly went for a long stretch without throwing it in to the rotation.
