Does anyone feel like Andrew Bird may be invited back this year? His show was my favorite last year, plus he guested with MMJ and also performed on the sonic stage. He has a new album called Armchair Apocrypha coming out in March, that uh, just leaked shhhhhh...., and is incredible. I hope they have him back again.

He seems like the type of act that could become a staple. He also seemed to dig the atmosphere last year. I really think his new album trumps everything else he's done.
I was born in the back seat of a Yellow Cab in a hospital loading zone and with the meter still running. I emerged needing a shave and shouted 'Time Square, and step on it!
Has anyone checked out his Bowl Of Fire cd. It is quite amazing. On a sad note, I missed his set last year due to a drunken companion(12:30 set too). Oh well, hopefully he plays again this year.
I love Andrew Bird, don't get me wrong, but his show last year just... meh. I didn't dig it, to be honest. I got bored. Maybe it was because I had a bigger anticipation for Devendra Banhart right after him. Hopefully he'll be back so I can give him a second chance.
I hope so, too, for your sake... Seriously though, my wife and I both had gotten decently into "... Eggs" before 'roo, but watching him live was something else. You know (and I've said this before about Damien Rice in '04), it takes a very special artist to take tightly-structured pop/rock songs and bring them to life at a concert. To me, Bird knew just how to tweak the arrangements slightly, embellish the melodies, accentuate certain rhythms, to make the song reveal itself to you in a whole new way. It's a completely different way of being an incredible performer than having amazing chops, perhaps even more impressive because it's not something you can really practice. Anyway, that's how I felt about his show.
Seeing him was a great experience. I had seen his live show once before and was blown away, so I knew what to expect and made sure I was front and center for his tent show. Then to see him from two rows away at the sonic stage on Sunday was awesome. Three people that I went with had never seen him before and they were all amazed. Really one of my fondest Roo memories.

I think I liked Eggs more, but this is growing on me. It is such a change from the way he played many of the songs live that it is hard for me to adjust. PLus I am not a huge fan of the female backing vocals.

His set last year was a blast! Not to mention, AB is uber-talented and gives Roo a good name. So much of the talk surrounding Bonnaroo in recent years has been about movement toward breaking acts. Bird is definately a great step in that direction....

Well, to each his own. The work on that album however is amazing. Everything from the arrangements to the vocal melodies are stronger. I like all of Mr Birds work, but Eggs always felt a little flat with some big holes to me. One thing thats coming along nicely is his voice. For some reason he's always reminded me of a flat Jeff Buckley with half the range. Which isnt a bad thing at all. If you can be half the vocalist that a man with a 6 1/2 octave range was then you're doing something right.

Good call on the similarities to Buckley.
I think you're the first person to agree with that. Always blows my mind when people dispute it. I never say they sound exactly alike, Bird sounds like a flat Buckley. I guess you need to really listen to Jeff to get the comparison. People who actually know who he was initially think of how amazing his voice was, Mr Birds isnt exactly on par. Their vocal styles however are extremely similar.
I'm not knocking Andrew Birds voice at all. Just so nobody gets that impression. Jeff Buckley had a tremendous voice with a 6 octave range I believe, which is unhuman. Having even half of that (roughly what AB has) makes you a standout vocalist.

Unhuman is right, only a handful of people have been documented as having 5 or 6 octave ranges, and the largest is 8. According to one website I found, Jeff had a 4 octave range. Just wanted to clear that up.
Jeff Buckley and Nick Drake are two singers people make bad comparisons to more than any other singers I can think of. I'm not saying you're way off base, but I kind of feel Buckley was taking from a totally different place musically than Andrew Bird. Nina Simone, Van Morrison and Robert Plant are among the most visibly apparent in his singing style. Whereas I think Andrew Bird is coming from a post-Beatles school of singer-songwriters best typified by Elvis Costello, Marc Bolan, and more recently, Elliott Smith (or Jon Brion because he practically shaped Smith's later sound).
Now, you want to talk about a poor man's Jeff Buckley, I'll throw out David Garza for your consideration.

I can hear the jeff buckley comparison on this new album, but not so much on weather systems, which is my favorite andrew bird album. I think its an acceptable comparison, but i definatly agree buckley had a much better voice. I think the van morrison comparison would be the best though.

Jeff Buckley on his albums exhibited something between a 4-5 octave range. The man himself however possesed something closer to 6. The range simply wasn't needed in the music. Its along the lines of how Mariah Carey will normally go through 6 octaves on her albums, but people who've worked with her have gone as far as saying that she can sweep a full 8 octaves working with a piano.

No offence meant whatsoever, but I'd like to see your sources for both of those statements. Having such a huge range is so extremely rare, I just find it very hard to believe.

Also re: the Mariah comment, 8 octaves is more than a piano has. Trust me, I tune them for a living.
Understood, and thanks for the correction. This discussion is nowhere near being a baby to message boards. Buckleys vocal range has been debated millions of times on millions of boards. If I remember some old threads and where they're posted I'll glady send them to you. You also have me interested in looking through some old JB bootlegs that I copied to disc long ago. Both studio sessions and live performances in which Jeff reaches much further than he does on his back catalogue. Ultimately its like talking about the difference between 99999.99 and 100000.00. The guy had an amazing voice. Simply, the point Im stating is a matter of personal opinion. I believe that Jeff had a larger range than that of 4 octaves because I've heard recordings in which I think he has exceeded that.

I've got the "Live at Sin-E" double disc, but I have a better ear for instruments than voices so I can't really tell how far his voice goes. However it is certainly my favorite Jeff Buckley work. He had already signed with Columbia but he hadn't released Grace yet. I still can't listen to him and not be sad.
Back onto Andrew Bird, I THINK only time I listened to him was the Lollapalooza webcast, which I didn't like. I'll have to go back and check now. If he truly sounds like Van Morrison then I should like him though.
Andrew Bird is announcing his tourdates on the 13th of Feb. Just another artist making some announcements right at the same time as Bonnaroo. This is what it says on his website "Hey ya'll - Andrew's spring tour will be announced on Feb 13 - check the shows page for all the details and information on pre-sale tickets."
i was reading another thread where someone figured out that if you typed "www.bonnaroo.com/namebandhere" a page will come up for that artist.
after several people did a little "investigating", they found that most (if not all) of the artists in the lineup for this year have a page - with writing. they checked out a few of the artists from previous years, who are not playing this year (ie, radiohead), and found that while they did have pages, they were blank.
after doing a little investigating of my own, it appears andrew bird has a page. wonder if this means it's just a matter of time before he's announced?
oh and i'd like to mention that i checked out some folks who've never played (and still won't?) and it says "You missed. The page you were looking for doesn't exist." interesting.

Spectacular find!
Bright Eyes has a page with the description from last year, M. Ward has a page without writing -- as do moe., Trey, and others. Wow, this is an interesting little thing, eh?
