GALACTIC IN STUDIO RECORDING HIP-HOP CENTRIC RECORD
ALBUM TO FEATURE COLLABORATIONS WITH MR. LIF, CHALI 2NA, LYRICS BORN, BOOTS RILEY, LATEEF THE TRUTHSPEAKER, GIFT OF GAB, LADYBUG MECCA AND OTHERS
New Orleans funk band Galactic is working on the follow-up to their 2003 release, Ruckus. The band has been co-writing tracks with a variety of vocalists and MCs including Jurassic 5's Chali 2na, Gift of Gab from Blackalicious, Mr. Lif, Lyrics Born, The Coup's Boots Riley, Lateef the Truthspeaker, Ladybug of Digable Planets, and others. In addition, the record will include various New Orleans icons including Mardi Gras Indian Big Chief Monk Boudreaux and Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews.
The hip-hop themed record will meld Galactic's own New Orleans street funk with some of today's most progressive MCs, something the band has experimented with in their live performances. Over the last several years, the group has appeared with the likes of Lyrics Born, Talib Kweli, The Roots, Jurassic 5, and Z-Trip. They also recently backed Juvenile on Jimmy Kimmel Live.
"Everyone in the band listens to a lot of hip-hop" says saxophonist Ben Ellman. "We have always felt there is a natural connection between the New Orleans funk and brass band music that has inspired our sound and the rhythmic aspects of hip-hop. We wanted to push ourselves on this record to do something really different. We felt it would be fun to make an album with some of our favorite MCs with us as a foundation since its always felt great when we've had the opportunity to do it live."
The band is currently considering whether to put the record out on their own imprint or through a label. They are targeting a late summer 2007 release.

This sounds really cool. Galactic is one of those bands I don't listen to nearly enough. They were one of the first bands in the jam scene that I got into and I listened to them a ton. I stopped listening after awhile because they just seem to pop up at every festival I go to or end up opening for a band I'm seeing. I ended up really enjoying their set at All Good last year that kinda got me back into them. I really miss Houseman though. I wish he never left.
What happens if my tee shot lands on a bird's back and he carries it out of bounds but then is attacked by a larger bird who grabs the ball and drops it in the hole? Is that still a hole in one? 'Cause that's how I'm gonna play it.
That's sick. At Vegoose Git of Gab and Ladybug Mecca both came on and did guest vocals during Galactic's set. Twas ill. Galactic should get another late night, a la 2005's Galactic's Krewe de Carnivale, and throw down with other Nawlins cats plus some of those dope MCs.
As much as I really dislike rap music I think I could get into this. I tend to like some rap when it's done over a live band. I really like some of the work STS9 has done with rappers so i can kind of see this going the same way. I woudn't want a whole show of hip-hop Galactic though. Just maybe part of a set.
As many of you know, we are currently in the studio working on our next record which we are hoping to have ready for early Fall 2007. We are very excited about how this record is coming together. So far we have contributions from some of our very favorite MCs including Mr. Lif, Lyrics Born, Ladybug Mecca (from Digable Planets), Gift of Gab (from Blackalicious), Chali2na (Jurassic 5), and Lateef the Truth Speaker. We also did a really cool track with New Orleans Mardi Gras Indian Big Chief Monk Boudreaux. In addition to the vocal tunes, we also have several killer instrumentals that we are working on including one that will feature NOLA's own Trombone Shorty. We are thrilled with how the project is coming along and plan to debut some of the material at a couple of bigger shows during the summer. We will continue to post updates on our progress over the next few months.
