Actually, Girl Talk plays little to nothing from Night Ripper at his shows. He creates the mashups as he goes, sometimes using samples from the album, but almost never matching the samples the same as on the album. He could go for as long as he wanted, probably, because I saw him go for almost an hour and a half with only approx. ten samples I recognized from the album.
I saw him about a year ago and it was about 75% of Night Ripper, but I am hoping that by the time I see him again for the Roo, he will have alot of new material, which from hhill's post it sounds like he does.
Also, that was the most fun music experience that I have had since last year's bonnaroo. Everyone was just thumping this tiny place called Lenny's in Atlanta (before it got bulldozed). I had invited a few friends, even some friends from work, to go see Girl Talk, and we were subjected to about 2 hours of noise-rock from local opening bands. Then just as some people were starting to head home, Mr. Gillis comes on and had everyone going nutso for about an hour and a half. It was a full on blast. I am definitely looking forward to this set, and it better be late night.

The reason i said he probably wont play a very long set is that the sound of Night Ripper, which is what people come to hear, is very calculated, and he cant really just freestyle it for a few hours, i think thats the appeal of the music. I didnt mean he just plays night ripper, i'm sure he has a different live show, but i doubt he really just does it on the fly.

IDk Im excited to see though....he plays very much like Venom who can definetly do what he does on the fly and Ive seen Venom play 3+ hour sets. The reason its easier for sasha to play such long sets is because he leaves the beat running for a substantial amount of time. Girl talk and djs like him like to keep the crowd on their toes and switch the sample every 5-10 seconds. Personally my favorite

Actually, we were on stage during his show, since he basically invites anyone and everyone to join him on the stage, and I checked out what he was doing. He basically is just putting together samples on his Mac laptop, which he just keeps queing up whatever mash-up samples that he wants to. It definitely looked like he was doing it on the fly, or like any regular dj, who has a bag of records and knows which ones work together and they just keeping pulling out the vinyl and matching the beats. He was essentially doing that on his Mac, sans records. I also read an article in which he says that he puts together mash-ups/or parts of mash-ups on a daily basis, so I would think that he has a reservior of sound that could go on for many, many hours (and this is when he had a day job, which I dont know if he has quit yet or not, but he might have alot more time on his hands now).
But I get what you are saying Ziggy, and he will probably only get a 1 to 1.5 hour set like Dangermouse got in 2004. Which, by the way, was really good stuff, especially when he was mixing with the Amelie soundtrack.
I think he's less of a mashup guy and more breakcore. Personally, I think he's not quite on the level as a guy like Jason Forrest, but he's pretty much defined a certain style and a lot of other djs are taking notice. I saw Spooky play last winter and the first 30 minutes of his show was a mashup set with music videos of the songs incorporated. Really great thought provoking stuff.
However, I don't think there's any real thought put behind Girl Talk's stuff. The guy's pure pop. I think he's just trying to get people to move not say anything special about our culture.

Maybe I'll throw myself to the dogs, but my back's not to the wall Maybe I'll lay some bricks for the man, but the days just aren't that long So if I settle back and chill will I see far enough to feel the angel's dream? I thought it was the Story of the World!

I really think that those of you out there who are on the fence about seeing Girl Talk should DEFINITELY reconsider. Girl Talk is one of the best shows that I have seen in a long time. I saw him two weeks ago in Nashville, and man it was awesome!! I don't care if you think he's not a true musician or if it seems stupid to watch a guy on a laptop; it's a F***ing Awesome Show. It's a lot of fun. I'm not a big dancer and I not a huge fan of mainstream hip hop/rap, but this was so much fun. I found myself out there shaking my ass and trying to get on stage like it was the Beatles or something. I am still talking about the show to this day. Additionally, he does create his own music, some of it is on the night ripper album, there's not very much and it's hard to pick out. but I think what he does "is" art. it's amazing how all the songs flow as if it was originally written that way.
oh and let me tell you...his sh!t is catchy. There has been several times I have caught myself in Wal-Mart softly singing to myself..."face down, arse up, that's the way we like to f*ck"

I think that people are too hung-up on wether or not he's a "true" musician. No, he's not a musician in the traditional/conventional sense but, he does make creative and innovative music. If anything, he should be seen as what he is; a freestyle producer. Maybe it's not the same methodoloy that the artists before him have used but, that's how music evolves. Some may argue that, since he works primarily with samples, he's not creating anything new....but that's simply not true. He recycles and re-invents exsiting material, creating a reflective comment on current musical culture. Holding a mirror up to people and what they do has always been the best and most effctive way to bring forth change, in any field. He may not be the typical Bonnaroo performer but, if you ask me, that's a positive thing. Through-out the years, musical innovation has always been greeted with dismissive ridicule (Elvis & Jerry Lee Lewis, The Beatles & The Stones, Sabbath & The Doors, Velvet Underground & Dead Kennedys, Run DMC & The Beastie Boys, Metallica & Slayer, N.W.A. & Public Enemy, Chemical Brothers & R.I.T.M., DMB & SCI, Jay Z & 50 cent, Aphex Twin & Girl Talk, etc....). That's just the way it goes. As soon as people start to think that they've got the "good music" formula figured-out, another band/artist will always come along and challenge it(Thank GOD!). Musical evolution is not just limited to styles and genres but, it also includes format and delivery. I, personaly, welcome it when someone makes me have to re-think my whole outlook, because it's those artists (not necessarily "musicains") that remind me that we're not done yet. They're proof that we, as a community and a culture are still growing.....That we're/it's still ALIVE!

I dont know about everyone else, but i surely wasnt talking about his music. Anything tentative i may have said was about his live show. I think his music is awesome, and i keep him in heavy rotation, and as an artist i think hes brilliant.

^ I know you weren't, man. I've been lurking around this thread for a while and I just wanted to go ahead and chime-in. I was just pointing-out how song-writing and live-performances were changing....and how positive I think it is.

This will be one of the biggest parties at Bonnaroo. It was awesome. He plugged his laptop into the soundboard in the middle of the tent and it was a party "in the round".

THAT'S SICK! That would be super hot at Bonnaroo.
It reminds me about the time Fatboy Slim played the first Rave on the Rocks at Red Rocks in 2002 and he set up in the sound booth right on the middle of the crowd. It was sicko.

dude you are crazy, with your logic because sasha uses an ibook, your gonna say he cant do stuff on the fly, and he can't play a long set? lol.....that is just insane

DJing with a mouse alone, he has said, is "not going to look right or feel right". That a quote of his. He has an imac, not an ibook, but he just uses it to run everything through, he still has turntables and such. Like i said, i think Girl Talks awesome. But out of curiousity, how long was his Langerado set? If he plays latenight, theres probably gonna be someone better playing, but i would like for there not to be a conflict so i can catch his set. I never said it'd be a bad set, im sure it'll be good, just that its something you can see pretty much anywhere, except with a smaller crowd, which for some is good and others bad.

Thanks, it doesnt bother me, or else i wouldnt say the "offensive" things. ;D The 37 minutes is a bit discouraging, but im sure he'll play a longer bonnaroo set, but not a marathon. I'm thinking perhaps an 1-1 1/2 hour opener for sasha and digweed, that'd be sweet.

He really was filler for the 45 minute setup time between Explosions in the Sky and The New Pornographers.
That's actualy an interesting idea. He could do many small 40 minute sets over the weekend just plugging into the board rather than us having to hear the same PA music.
