Oh boy, is Elvis Perkins a find. Its funny because i looked him up last summer bc he was at lolla, and i somehow got a hold of his song "ash wednesday" . i really liked it at the time, and then went along my merry way not seeing him play. well i started listening to "ash wednesday" again ( album comes out tomorrow, tuesday the 20th actually) and man is this a great song or what. Even though he's at the bottom of the list, "Ash Wednesday" HAS to be considered one of the top songs of 2007, and of any performer on the bonnaroo lineup. I can only think of a handful of bonnaroo performer's songs that are better than this one, a couple police songs, a couple of wilco, and white stripes songs, some hold steady tunes of course, "do you realize", "take me out", "wagon wheel" by OCMS, among others. This guy/band really is gonna shock alot of people this year, i hear the live show is amazing too!!!!
I really like his album alot. Been listening to it the past couple days, really enjoy it. I will definitely try to see Elvis Perkins barring any major conflict.

Elvis Perkins is the son of the late actor Anthony Perkins (Psycho!) who died in 1992 of complications with AIDS. I believe "Ash Wednesday" is written about that and it is an unbelievably good song. I saw Mr. Perkins and his band open for Okkervil River in Chicago this past October. I am a huge Okkervil River fan -- but Elvis may have actually played a better set (shhhh don't tell Will Sheff I said that!). He is ridiculously good live, not to be missed if you ask me. His band played a cover of Del Shannon's "Runaway" halfway through the set which had the crowd going nuts. They opened with the first song from their album, "While You Were Sleeping", and at first it was just Elvis, then the rest of his band joined him one by one to flesh out the sound of the song before it climaxed. DAMN! It was a chill-inducing moment. Don't judge him by his album, as good as his album is it's all about the incredible live show.
Oh, and they closed their set with this crazy version of the Ronette's "Be My Little Baby" complete with thundering drums!

And his mother was killed on one of the 9/11 flights.
I first heard his single a few days before the lineup announcement, and instantly thought he'd be a great addition. I'm looking forward to getting his album tomorrow, and can't wait to see him at Roo.
I caught some of his set at Lolla as well as his jam with Matt Costa during his set. What a fun band to watch. They were just all grins and good times. I'll definitely check out his set! (And, hey, bring back Matt Costa!!!!! I'm really dyin' for another go-round with Miss Magnolia!)
