Just wanted to encourage some discussion of The Black Keys. I haven't seen much talk of them on here, but I know there must be fans. White Stripes fans (or anyone like me who loves broke-down blues) should really be stoaked for these guys.
Anyone been to a Black Keys show? I'm expecting it to rock.
They play purer blues than the White Stripes. AND they've got a real drummer. ;D I missed them at Austin City Limits in 2005 and I've really wanted to see them since, so I'm thrilled to have the chance. I'll love them anytime, but late-night in particular would kill. Not that I want another conflict.
I'm looking forward to seeing them as well. I saw them last time at 2004 Roo. They definitely have risen in popularity since their names are much higher on the billing this time around. Thats good to see.
Seen them three times now; they never disappoint. If anyone doesn't know them, my favorite is still Rubber Factory, but their newest, Magic Potion is a good place to start as well.
edit - seen them four times. not sure how i forgot about them opening for radiohead last summer. man.

I try to work the word "thickfreakness" into conversation on a weekly basis. I've used it as a noun, verb, and adjective and it has been every effective in all 3 positions.

Seen 'em live twice, once in a tent at Coachella and once supporting Radiohead (Chicago '06), they kicked ass both times, but the Radiohead set was great, just to watch the unsuspecting audience get into them from a standing start. Not to be missed.

Yeah this show will rock! Black keys always bring it...I have seen them 5 times. The first being at a small club when they did a tour for the Big Come up, then I saw then grow to bigger venues with each album release and tour. This is one of the few bands I truly followed from the beginning so I am excited to see them grow and also to finally see the at roo!!! (cause i missed the 2004 fest)
They also get best B-side ever award. The B side to Hard Row 7" is called EVIL, and it is such an awesome song. So awesome that if you don't own a turntable you just are not awesome enough to hear it.
Uhh...well, okay. The Black Keys have a MUCH, MUCH better drummer technically, which means that they can do more things with a guitar and drums than the White Stripes can. The X factor is of course Jack White, and Meg's drumming does fit him well, but she's not really a drummer. It's like saying Wayne Coyne is really a guitar player. Ya' dig?
Cool you guys mentioned Radiohead, I would have loved to have seen those shows. They do thank Radiohead in their liner notes for the last album. I can't ever imagine them listening to Rhead though.
I've seen multiple Black Keys shows, most recently they placed twice in Nashvegas at the end of 2006, but I think the show that has stayed with me the most is their ACL aftershow with Arcade Fire at Stubb's in 2005.
I'm always blown away by how just Dan and Patrick generate the music they do. I can't wait to see them at 'Roo this year. Really hope they get an evening set time!
Granted, I love Meg. What she lacks technically she more than makes up for in being LOUD, and that's a big part of the White Stripes sound. And she's getting better all the time. I say this with all the authority of someone who's never seen them live, ha! But I listen to their albums all the time, I think you can notice a considerable improvement between their self-titled and GBMS. It's the Black Keys that have a "real" drummer. Not trying to come down on Meg though, I love her drumming. But chops are chops, damnit.
I've seen the Keys twice when I lived near Memphis, and they certainly deliver. Their latest album is teh secks!!
Meg can drum just fine, too many people worry about 'technical proficiency' but i say give me Ringo Starr or Charlie Watts over Neil Peart or Buddy Miles any day of the week.

Huh, I always kind of thought of Neil Peart as the quintessence of technically proficient drumming. Him or Dave Weckl. But regardless, I see what you're saying. There's skill and there's heart, and both can make great musicians.

Ringo starr is a very very good drummer. Meg White is so bad she's distracting.
I'm looking forward to the black keys a lot more then the white stripes.
I'm going to have to disagree, I would put Meg amd Ringo in very similar boats. Meg isn't bad, she just can't go off on crazy drum solos or really technical stuff. Meg is still percise, she does the job that is asked of her, she just can't take it to the next level. Ringo, also percise, but nothing special. In fact, there are a number of Beatles tracks where they don't even use Ringo on drums . . . a reporter once asked John Lennon if he thought Ringo was the best drummer in the world . . . Lennon's response, "He's not even the best drummer in The Beatles"
