i'm sure i will get blasted for this, but o well
i really hope oar comes back this year. they are one of my favorite bands, and they've played twice before, in 2003 and 2005. continuing with that sequence, it would make sense for them to come back in 2007.
so hears a petition/thread hoping they come this year!

they've turned into pop music. They're not talented musicians at all. The saxaphoneists is all right but nothing special. They belong at a pop festival. Please o please Bonnaroo don't bring O.A.R. to your awesome festival. Their fanbase is so lame. They put the Dave crowd to shame and that's an accomplishment

I take offense to this - to me it's the people who bash other "fanbases" that are truly lame.
Like their music or not, O.A.R. is still talented, and there are plenty of Bonnaroo attendees who packed out their shows in 2003 and 2005 (myself included) and would love to see them there again.
It's also funny hearing people saying they don't want them at 'roo cause they're kind of pop? You do realize this is a festival that already has Fountains of Wayne and Lily Allen, right?

I would have to agree with the above statement, OAR isn't any more poppish than Fountains of Wayne. I don't mind OAR, but if they did come to the festival, I probably wouldn't see them due to the number of bands that are way better that I would have to see.

They're popular, have you ever listened to their music? If you had to pigeonhole them you'd probably have to say reggae. Also, what i dont like about oar is that they're singalong music, then you go their show and they play their songs all weird, and you cant sing along. I personally like their studio stuff, its fun to singalong to from time to time, but i've never been a fan of them live. And to compare The Police and OAR is ridiculous.
Pop = Great hooks, catchy music, that may or may not have wide appeal
The Police were most certainly a pop band. If you sit down with someone who studies music, just about anything outside the realm of classical music is considered pop. The word is tossed around like it's a bad thing.

When i think of "Pop", like oar, its great hooks, and catchy, simple music, which i dont have a problem with, but i dont want to see it live. The Police are much more then that, although they have pop songs, even those songs are more intricate then you hear on the first listen.

i simply compared oar & the police as a 'pop' band. i love both bands, and i consider the police to be better musicians and a better band as a whole. i guess that i meant to say that the police are more of a 'pop/rock' band, which oar fits into too
Post by ziggyandthemonkeys on Feb 24, 2007 16:45:30 GMT -5
I understand what your saying, and while they're both pop i think its a bad comparison because oar is more strictly pop, and the police go a lot further then that. I'm not trying to hate on oar, as i said, i actually their studio stuff, but i dont think they really need to be added. I wouldnt cry if they were though, just clearing up a conflict for me. Thats why i think its stupid when people complain about a band at bonnaroo, if you dont like them, dont see them, theres atleast one other band playing at the same time.
I am not a fan of oar and as far as pop, unpop, poppy what ever you want to call it is fine by me. I am not big on judgeing ones taste in music because to them it could mean something completely different than to me and I can not fault them for that. I am open to them being there because the more people at that stage the less at the one i am at.
Are you kidding? They're are not that good. The majority of the bands at the Roo would run circles around each of their members instrumently.
And tell the bassists to get over himself and quit changing basses every freakin song. The asian dude plays the weakest solos and like i said before the saxaphonists is the most talented member of the band and he is merely average. They have catchy songs without a doubt, but they've totally sold out and they're not very talented with their instruments. Poker is good and that's about it
I apologize about the attack on the fanbase because that maybe just how the fan base is in Atlanta. Where I made the mistake of witnessing a show

My thoughts exactly. You guys want OAR? I hope you get em!

I do agree about the fanbase though, i think its worse then dave. But the difference is that daves actually full of good musicians, and oar really isnt, so theres still a lot of music fans at dave shows, while a majority of the people at oar shows are just frat guys and the like. When oar opened for dmb it was pretty bad, ha. I dont think that fanbase would follow them to bonnaroo though.

ummm....if you guys don't like O.A.R. that's fine. no skin off my back.
but to say they don't belong at bonnaroo is weak sauce. or to say they aren't a 'real' band; come on now.
O.A.R. plays instraments, has lyrics, makes albums and sells out venues (MSG to name one). sounds to me like they are a real band. how well they play/sing in your eyes is completely irrelevant to if they are a real band or not.
anybody who was at their set during bonnaroo a few years ago would know that they had probably the longest crowd applause after they left the stage at bonnaroo, ever. i'll disclaimer that though and say i, along with many others who agreed, don't see every show at every bonnaroo, but of those that i have been too, they had the greatest crowd reaction after their show.
I don't think every single band AC/Superfly adds to Bonnaroo needs our personal seal of approval. They're a few bands on the lineup this year that I will 100% not be present for. One less conflict for me.
I apologize about the attack on the fanbase because that maybe just how the fan base is in Atlanta. Where I made the mistake of witnessing a show
I've seen O.A.R. 3 times in Atlanta... so I guess you're complaining about me. Guess what, I'll be at Bonnaroo this year too, contributing to the fanbase there - watch out!
