Bonnaroo has shown the remarkable ability to put together some incredibly NASTY one-off and rare appearances each year.
For example, in 2002 they had Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains, Keller Williams Incident (the first I think), and Galactic late night with a slew of crazy guests and the Superjam.
2003 had the Superjam (what else?)
2004 had Trey's orchestral set, North Mississippi Allstars Hill Country Revue, Praxis, Material and Superjam.
2005 had Galactic's Krewe de Carnivale, The Word, Herbie Hancock's Headhunters 2005, Masquerade Ball and Superjam.
2006 had Oysterhead, Dr. John as The Night Tripper, Trey/Mike/The Duo, and the Masquerade Ball.
What does 2007 hold for us? I'm sure we'll have a Superjam and Masquerade Ball. I think Galactic might play late night with a slew of MCs. There is that rumor that The Roots might play late night with a bunch of awesome guests. What other unique surprises do y'all think Bonnaroo has in store for us this year?
Yea. The Govt Mule chatter has it sounding like a pretty solid event.
While Mars Volta > Sigur Ros would be cool, I wouldn't categorize that as a "one-off" or "special" show unless they actually played TOGETHER. Both of these bands tour on a regular basis.
I'm talking about stuff that doesn't happen anywhere else.
My favorite 'Roo surprise was in '03 when Galactic rode around the campgrounds on float with Charlie Hunter and played a nice set. They came into Cennteroo and then went down by the smaller stage and parked and played for another half hour. Galactic is always touring but I'll probably never see them again on a parade float, and only like 100-150 people ended up seeing it because some latenight shows were going on at the same time. I even got to light the bass players cigarette for him. Just an overall cool experience that I probably won't ever get to see again.
That's what I'm talking about. I missed that but I heard it. Also, when Rebirth Brass Band played on the float in Centeroo at 2:30am on Saturday morning last year I just about sh*t myself. That was unbelievably cool.
