those vids are really great stuff. i started with "TNT" then went to the self titled, then "millions now living". i personally like "TNT" the best, as it has the most jazzyness to it, i would def recommend it. "millons" is my second fav but not my much. havent gotten into "standards" or "all around you" yet but im sure they are good as well.
Besides Tool, i'm most excited to see Tortoise. I recommend It's All Around You. If anyone missed it, check out their performance on the 2003 Bonnaroo dvd. The song is "Tin Cans & Twine"
I wish i could get the bootleg of that performance.
*i like coconuts, you can break them open they smell like ladies lyin in the sun** *Hell I don't even know where I am** *for now I must sit here and ponder the yonder: The herbivores did well cause their food didn't never run** *We listen, if it feels good We shake** *You made a big impression for a girl of your size, Now I can't get by without you and your big brown eyes.**
"They won't break me because the desire for freedom, and the freedom of the Irish people, is in my heart. The day will dawn when all the people of Ireland will have the desire for freedom to show. It is then that we will see the rising of the moon."
Yeah, Standards is where I started. If you really want leftfield Tortoise, check out their completely bizarre covers album collaboration with Bonnie 'Prince' Billy which covers everyone from The Minutemen to Richard Thompson to Devo to Bruce Springsteen to Lungfish. Overall, not as good as any of Tortoise's solo stuff, but interesting nonetheless.
Tortoise is amazing. Did anyone catch Daniel Lanois with Tortoise about a year and a half ago? First set Tortoise. Second set Daniel Lanois with Tortoise. That show was absolutely fantastic.

i hope tortoise goes up against something epic... like wilco, ziggy marley, or even the roots.
that way the crowd will be substantially thinned.
^i like the way you think an intimate performance would be amazing. i would think they would play one of the tents right?
heres from the confirmed post (thanks to LIguy for keeping that up for us) Friday (6/15) The String Cheese Incident Michael Franti & Spearhead The Black Keys DJ Shadow Hot Chip RX Bandits Lily Allen Brazilian Girls Manu Chao Tortoise Gillian Welch James Blood Ulmer Uncle Earl Paolo Nutini Cold War Kids (Friday Late Night)Sound Tribe Sector Nine
dont put them against cheese. please. but even if they did i still would go with tortoise

Tortoise is one of the handfull of bands this year that i'm really excited to see. I can't wait! I'd like to see them be put into a latenight set but, I know, that won't happen. Maybe Yo La Tengo's slot in '04?
i just got "its all around" a few days ago. wow. i dont think they are capable of making a bad album. im soooooooo glad they will be at roo. i couldnt be more excited. do they have a chance to play in the evening, or will they be day most likely? anybody? i would really like some evening tortoise. great vibes.

^^^Yeah, and that's their worst album, and it's still really good. I think they would thrive in late night, and I think they deserve it, but seeing all the acts that already are playing late night or must be, I have my doubts. I don't really care, I'll be front and center no matter where or when.
muchos karma.^^^ late night tortoise would kick a.ss but i know it wont happen. it would be nice to have them in the evening though, when the sun gets a little more golden and its starting to cool off a little. beauty. with beautiful music.

I'm a huge Tortoise fan! After the Flaming Lips (who put on the best show anywhere) I am most excited to see Tortoise among all the bands at Roo this year. But i must admit that i have never seen them live and am somewhat skeptical of their ability to reproduce all that complex stuff live.
For those that don't know, Tortoise and its mebers and associated musicians played a huge role in the popularization of intellectual/complex/jazz based Post Rock in the 90's. Now they are in large part the "Poster Band" for the "post rock sucks" movement that seems to be spreading among noiseheads and new weird america and avant garde fans. So that's a sure way to know they as a band can be a portal to all sorts of different music if you don't know much about post rock.
I think Millions Now Living Will Never Die is a masterpiece of an album. It also has a really intriguing title. TNT while probably their most accessible venture is really also a fantastic piece of music. Standards is harder to get into (but i love it) The self titled album is pretty cool but maybe not the best place to start with this band.
If you like this band you might also dig: Low Oneida Mice Parade Do Make Say Think The Sea and Cake Don Caballero

Toroise is the nuts, and thanks mang for the roo 03 show. I've been looking for that one for awhile. The way I see it, regardless of what time they play this year, it should be a dynamite show. Also, isn't Millions Now Living Will Never Die a slogan for the Jehovah's Witnesses or something.

No need to fear. I haven't yet seen them live either, but the bootleg of their set from '03 is killer-- they are tight and huge and bold and fresh. Check my last post in this thread, I upped it for anyone to download. But also some of the live stuff on the DVD in the "A Lazarus Taxon" box set is very nice. There's a video of them performing "Salt the Skies" live in their recording space, and I'll just say this: I didn't care for that tune until I saw that video.
But on another note, I think it really says a lot about the awesomeness of this group when, on the allmusic.com page about them, it lists their known influcences as:
Can Liquid Liquid Sonic Youth Neu! Mahavishnu Orchestra Steve Reich Ornette Coleman Soft Machine
Any group with an influences list that eclectic and that stellar must kick ass.
