Anyone ever hear of this guy? He has a pretty unique story. I was browsing tribute albums on Wikipedia, and this guy came up with artists like Jeff Tweedy, Bright Eyes, Okkervil River and The Mountain Goats covering his songs. I went to his Wiki, and read all about him. He has only played a handful of shows in his almost 30 year career, but he has almost fifty albums out. He recently played at SxSW in Austin. Check him out, I think he would make quite an intersting addition to Bonnaroo '07.
SXSW has the advantage of being located in a city close to Houston. I think Jazzfest and SXSW are pretty much the two kinds of festivals that would be able to get a guy like Jandek out of seclusion.
But why would a guy that clearly does not want to be seen show up at SxSW? It is THE PLACE to be seen if you are trying to make it in the industry. This is why I think that Jandek could possibly want to play at a festival like Bonnaroo. It would let him showcase his work to many people that would otherwise not have the opportunity to see him.

I mean, I'm not saying it's impossible, just not likely. Bonnaroo's not really about the same things that SXSW is, nor is it anywhere near the same kind of set up.
As I side note, Jandek's probably going to play the Highline festival David Bowie's throwing in April if I'm not mistaken. At least, that's what his fansite seems to indicate...

Is SXSW even considered a festival? I think it's way too massive and spread out for anything like that. But I guess the term festival can be taken very loosely. However, I was on their site the other day and I was getting confused looking at the lineup....sheesh...how would you even see people that you wanted to see? I could only imagine how packed all those streets are. Do they close off that whole area or something? I ask this because I know hardly anything about SXWS besides it's name and location and bands play all over various bars in downtown Austin....so I'm kind of in the dark here.

It's primarily a media conference now. It's really split in two parts with the first five days devoted mainly to film and the second five days devoted to music. They sell wrist bands and badges for all the events, but their primary target is the media itself.
For the music, SXSW rents out any available performance space, and then divies out bands generally suited to each club's slant (although not always). Jandek peformed in a Presby Church this year. Jandek was one of a handful of well established artists who were billed as either keynote speakers or headlining performers. Last year, the keynote speaker was Neil Young and the headlining performer was Morrissey. This year, it was Pete Townshend and the Stooges, respectively.
So yeah, SXSW and Bonnaroo are totally different affairs. Bonnaroo caters to consumers first, and the press is a secondary concern used to generate buzz to gain more consumers. SXSW caters to primarily to the industries of media, with wristbands sold at high prices and parties thrown, primarily to generate more of a story to write about. I consider SXSW to be a hype fueled event and Bonnaroo to be a consumer fueled event. Therein lies the major difference and the source of disdain I have for SXSW.

Yeah jandek is pretty original. I have a bunch of his shit and it evokes a whole range of reactions; some of it is awesome some of it is annoying and some of it i don't even notice. there's a dude at audioscrobbler who has tagged Jandeks stiff as "how the fuck do you tag Jandek"
But i think he's ha d a pretty long career. I don't really know. If you like him you might be into:
"...well yeah the guitar is good accompaniment but you can't like compose with it; I mean you can't base a whole song around the guitar." -Bob Dylan 1965

^^^Yes. Jandek released his first album (under the name "The Units") in 1978. He's since released an average of 2 or 3 albums a year. He's a monster. And I agree that some stuff is very amazing (Six and Six) and some is almost worthless (Put My Dream on This Planet).
