The first year I partied all night in traffic(11:00 p.m.- 9:00 a.m). After setting up camp and getting my mind right, I passed out in the shade of my car. Woke up a few hours later to realize I had missed Col. Claypool's Flying Frog Brigade and was missing Gov't Mule. I leaped to my feet and ran to Centeroo thinking I had missed half of Mule, but luckily I wasn't the only one running late. I got to see Les later that weekend during the Bucket of Bernie's Brains set, but I had to walk away from String Cheese to see that show.
The point is I don't consider these "mistakes". Bonnaroo forces you to make gut-wrenching choices, but makes up for it by having the most collaborative atmosphere around.

I think my biggest miss from the first year was Norah Jones. Wish we had caught her set. But I'm sure whomever was playing at the same time was amazing and rocked my world just as much
Heh, first year we didn't exactly know how to pace ourselves for Bonnaroo... and passed out and slept through Neil Young. Huge regrets there.
Also missed Polyphonic Spree, but that's one that I didn't really know much about then, but I'm definitely come to be a big fan of them since. Wish I had seen them, in retrospect.

Same exact thing happened to me, and I missed Neil Young.
I also consider it a huge waste of time to camp anywhere other than camping only. Spent the first two Bonnaroo's walking way to far to get back to camp, never again.

Do you mean the very first year of Bonnaroo? Or just our first time going? Well, regardless of what you mean, I'm gonna go ahead and answer about my first time, which was last year. At the time, I wasn't really into Radiohead as much as I am now (friggin love em now, have all their cds and whatnot). Anyway, we went to the concert under the influence of nummy treats for awhile and their light show was doing crazy things to us. So we ended up wandering around centeroo the rest of the concert. We found ourselves in the middle of the sonic forest and couldn't leave. We tried three times to leave, but we would all always turn back around and go right back in. It was like friggin moths being attracted to a light. It was kinda comical, but I highly regret missing most of the Radiohead concert. Good thing they're releasing a dvd.
My one and only regret was missing last year's epic MMJ and Umphrey's/Biscuits late night. I just did not have anything left, as was witnessed by the countless people who nearly saw me pass out at Tom Petty due to exhaustion.

My first year was '04.
I was harassed by a Trooper for hitchiking a bit on the interstate & nearly missed the entire weekend.
I passed out on the grass sometime Friday & woke up, in a large crowd, during the String Cheese Incident show. I missed a bit of them, and some of Bob Dylan, but I managed to get back up & enjoy some of both.
By Sunday, after spending for a few hours passed out in my flooded tent, I was in pretty rough shape. I ended up missing almost everything that day, worst of all being David Byrne.

in 2005, my dumbass friend made me leave mule to see mouse on mars-a shitty techno band-that played in the day-techno should be at night, and actually we left a couple songs before those bad ass cover songs that mule did
MMJ late night, without a doubt. I was too busy throwing up by the bathrooms to make it. From now on, water and gatorade during the day. Alcohol+Dust+Heat+Camp Smell= sick rookie roo-er
That's too bad brokenlight. Mule and especially The Word were two of the highlights in 2005.
I made a few rookie mistakes in my early years too. The first was eating fungus in the daytime the first day of the first Roo. It was about 95 degrees and it sucked to be in that state in that heat. I missed a good portion of the late nights the first two years by partying in the day. The biggest rookie mistake I made however was not bringing an RV. Since 2004 I've had an RV at Roo and my experiences have been so much better because of the benefits an RV affords.

The Mars Volta. If there wouldn't have been any technical difficulties, I would've been able to have caught at least an hour of their set. However, I caught like 15 minutes of it. Way TOO tired.
I regret this the most. I did see them open up for System Of A Down later that year. But it still didn't make up for the mindblowing show I would've saw at roo.
The light rain helped it cool down and let us sleep in on Sunday morning. There weren't any shows I wanted to catch early Sunday, so it didn't matter. I felt well rested and energetic all 'Roo, yet I didn't feel like I missed out on anything by sleeping.
Just try to get some sleep. Get to sleep by the late A.M. each night and the sun will wake you up around 9 or 10. You'll be fine.

My gf and I missed DAVID BYRNE!!!!!! He was one of the main reasons we even bought our tickets in '04 but, we ended-up leaving early on Sunday after our tent and belongings were absoultely destroyed by that legandary storm. There were other factors as well but, being rookies we let the rain and mud get to us. It won't happen again! STUPID, STUPID ASSHOLES!!!!!!!!!!!!

my first year my friend and I indulged a little too much. i ended up passing out for far longer than I had even wanted, which was not at all. i ended up stumbling to centeroo at like 2am and had missed half of the mars volta. in my stupor i was able to catch roulette dares though, #1 priority on my personal setlist. my other poor friend got wasted drunk missed half of j5, allman brothers, dave, the mars volta. fool.
Not my first Roo but the worst mistake was skipping Herbie Hancock for the Allman Brothers. The Allmans played one hell of a set openig with Mountain Jam soo it wasn't to bad. Saw Herbie later at the Super Jam and with Panic.

'05 I wanted to see ABB so badly that me and my friends got there for Allison Krauss and pretty much just walked to the gate. We stayed there up against the gate for the next 8 hours, no sitting as there was no room to sit and no piss breaks because we knew we wouldn't be getting back up front. It was awesome seeing the Brothers and Dave from so close but I was completely wiped out from standing the whole time. We went back to our campsite to get some supplies and I just ended up crashing and missing the late-nights. I was able to pace myself much better last year and I didn't go up front to any shows, just kinda hung back and chilled and then just let loose for the late-nights.

that musta been sweet to be in the front front row. my rookie year was 05. i regret leaving the duo show at 815 to head over to dave to meet my buddies and missed mike's song. dave didnt come on tl 9 when it said 830. wtf! anyhow i was beat after dave and missed late night friday. made up for it on saturday though. late night is the shit!

Ive missed alot, but I try to not get too upset about it. That is why I try to not have a hugely packed itinerary, but there are always the handful of bands i cannot miss. in 05, i wanted to see yonder and my brother (who i go with every year) and his freinds were lagging at the campsite. i started getting pissed and i walked away - i said LOUD "IM NOT MISSING YONDER" I started heading to the music, and i turned around 5min later the whole crew was behind me. Sometimes kiddies need a kick in the butt ;D
2004 was my first year and I missed a whole bunch of the Dead's set. The rain had taken a lot out of me and I really wasn't much of a fan at that point -- boy -- things change, eh? That night continued on as I walked around the late nights with some dude named Grizzly Bear (I change his name everytime I describe this scenario, but I know he went by some animal name) or some sh*t. I really didn't commit to Ween or RRFB and sort of zoned out. Interesting evening -- highly surreal.
ya my first year was 04 and i only saw 8 shows. my biggest regret was being driven back to friggin camp mushmouth by the rain and not going back up for the dead. but even way out there it sounded good at camp. but i should have went back up. i was still in the "must hang with the group" phase of my festival going ways. now i am on my own atleast 1 night evey fest when my friends wuss out. but ive got some hardocre latenighters coming with this year. and my other friends have become more hardcore also. plus the inforoo latenight crew. so i should be good.
and not my first year. but im hugely dissapointed i missed phil with grab last year. i cant call it a mistake because dr john was awesome. but had i known phil was gonna be finishing up with grab as i got there i would have left dr john before it ended to see that.

last year I missed My Morning Jacket, because I was soo tired. I woke up early in the morning, I couldn't sleep cuz of the heat, so spent all day wandering around centeroo drinking, not a good idea.
Primus late-night in 04. I'm sure this will be reiterated many times here. I still kick myself for it.
Yeah, I heard that!!! That day I got way way too spun but it's cool because I can manage myself. The only thing is when it started waring off that night I was starting to lose it a little and when I was in that crowd at before Primus came on things were just gettin to me. Like those freaky balls they were trying to perfect on the stage and I thought I saw Claypool walking around on stage. Anyways, I moved back out of the crowd to the trees when they didn't go on on time. Still no show so I headed to the bar. Well one beer just about killed me and I HAD to pass out so I headed in a very depressed slow drunken slouch of shame back to my tent. Worst thing I think I've ever missed. I did miss The Mars Volta but thats mainly because I had been in Centeroo since before the music started then went to show after show and by the time late night hit I had to rest so I decided to take a "nap". Well, lets just say my GF and I were more than pissed to wake up to the sun baking our tent out.

last year was my first year and i missed so much good stuff. the biggest regrets were dr. john, beck, radiohead, moe., and ben folds. i was largely unprepared for the heat and it just drained my energy. on sat. i started drinking waaayyy too early and passed out sitting up in my tent while saying that i'm gonna get up and go to dr. john. never made it. stupid me. no more drinking alcohol in the mid-day sun.
advice: if you are too tired and want to goto sleep, just go lay down near a stage somewhere. Who says you cant enjoy the music while your resting. Maybe after you lay down for 30 minutes or an hour, then you will be refreshed and can dance your heart out to some late night shows.
Last year i had to lay down in front of mmj's stage around 1am. And it was still so awesome to hear. Whenever i think back to that night, i get this huge smile on my face.
another thing... dont smoke anything that might give you dry mouth... water is a valuable resource. Thank god when i was front row for radiohead, a guy next to me offered me his water. He truely saved my life.
