advice: if you are too tired and want to goto sleep, just go lay down near a stage somewhere. Who says you cant enjoy the music while your resting. Maybe after you lay down for 30 minutes or an hour, then you will be refreshed and can dance your heart out to some late night shows.
Thanks for all the advice. Grasshopper learn many valuable things.
1. When you start a new thread, be prepared to get smitten. 2. Get plenty of sleep 3. Don't waste your time sleeping. 4. Don't do drukqs or alkehol. 5. Have a damn good time.

This year I got a low chair and I figure I'll just park it outside the tent and pass out to the music. Last year I missed GRAB because I didn't believe Trey would actually come back after playing in St. Louis. I learned my lesson.

Karma for starting a GREAT thread...
Drinking heavily during the day seems to be a recurring thing in this thread. I try to stick to water during the day because being drunk in the sun sounds better than it feels. Late night is so much more important than most of the bands playing between noon and around 4:00 p.m. (with some exceptions).
Just to reiterate on my previous comment. When I get tired, I AM REALLY TIRED. I have really bad insomnia because it runs in my family and so it's very easy for me to go days without sleep. I like your idea of laying down at a stage and I've done it before. But the thing is when I missed Primus I was by myself and I'm not a big fan of passing out in front of 10's of thousands of people all by myself! It may work for you but it's not for me, I'm not that trusting of a person. Also when I missed The Mars Volta I was with the lady and there was no convincing her not to take a nap in the tent. She's more anal about sleeping in front of so many people than I am. So I guess all I'm saying is that not everyone is cool with taking naps in front of a crowd. I've done it before, but only with good friends standing around. And another thing, I like to drink whenever just not get drunk, I'll keep a couple beers in me just to feel good and I've never had problems with it. And doing other things to enhance your time is alright as long as you do it in moderation and with good company.

Just a tip from my end. To facilitate quality sleep at night, get a battery powered tent fan and devise a way to hang a tarp over your tent. This allows you to sleep a bit later without waking up constantly sweating. The more quality sleep you get, the less tired you'll be when late nights roll around on Friday and Saturday.
Take it from me. In '04, I had to go back to camp and slept through all of the Dead. In '06, I bought the tent fan and saw double the amount of shows. With that said, it's an exhausting weekend, so just be prepared.

04 was my first year and, like Dude and Aqaurium, I missed the Dead. There was a ferocious storm and after it blew over I went to Steve Winwood unprepared for the weather. This was a bad rookie mistake b/c it continued to rain and I got soaked and retreated to camp.
I'm a resident of TN so I know about the weather. Classic example of partying too much and not using common sense.

I think last year must have been hotter than years past because I'm usually good for the late nights but I was exhausted for them last year. From what other people say, I wasn't alone. This year I'm going to make sure I'm ready for the late nights because it's my favorite part of the fest.
I missed like half of '05's roo thanks to my dog getting fatally sick back at home. Went from the highest of highs to the very lowest of lows (which lasted a long time). I missed a whole handful of shows (obviously) because of this, but puppers was more important and when I heard what was going on Saturday morning I followed my gut reaction and we made our way home.
We saw a lot of Allman Bros., then wandered to some tables at the very back of the Herbie Hancock set (w/ John Mayer). As much as I like Allman Bros, at that point I was sad we didn't get to see more of Herbie Hancock.
We took a timeout around 3pm in a spot under a tree, some light dozing and cooling down. But we didn't really nap long enough, we went back to camp after the Dave Matthews set and didn't go back to Centeroo for Mars Volta, which I am still disgruntled about.
We were completely unprepared for the heat and the walking, which is something we'll change up this year by being in VIP, with a shade tent and camelback with mister attachments. We will also time our sleeping a bit better this year, so that the 3am mark isn't so surprising.
All things considered, we still saw more than 5 shows on Friday, so 8-9 for the weekend seems a bit conservative.
We treat mishaps like sinking ships and I know that I don't want to be out to drift Well I can see it in your eyes like I taste your lips and They both tell me that we're better than this
to combat sleep loss during the night, i like to take two advil PM. i sleep like a baby till the sun wakes me up and it gets rid of the aches and pains from walking and shaking my buns all day.

Primus late-night in 04. I'm sure this will be reiterated many times here. I still kick myself for it.
Ironically, I kick myself for catching this set. I missed most of the Dead's second set to stand in the mud listening to a Johnny Cash album on repeat for like 2 hours, before they finally came on and played *maybe* 2 hours. Wish I'd stuck around for the rest of The Dead, or caught Ween, or Robert Randolph instead. I was stoked for the Adrian Belew collaboration, which was a highlight, but other than that it was a pretty standard set. They could've at least made an announcement that they would be running late or something.

I was thinking about doing the same, but mixing that with substances (especially alcohol) is a bad idea, so I guess it comes down to what's more important to you.
I think no matter what I'm gonna get shitty sleep at night, so the idea of 30 minute to an hour long naps in the shade a couple times a day is probably the best idea.
We'll see how many rookie mistakes I make this year...
well, you ask me why i'm drunk all the time it levels my head and eases my mind i just walk along and stroll and sing i see better days and i do better things

In '04 I was way too messed up before the dead. While walking towards centeroo, a herd of Rooers were dissapointed because someone ssaid it was cancelled from the rain. I decided to ignore them and keep schlepping on, i posted outside of centeroo and made a mini tent out of 2 ponchos. Fudge a little rest......if you practice meditation or muscle relaxation, DO that!! I took a 20 minute power meditation, and focused on energizing my body and fueling my mind. It is easy to lose concentration but be patient with yourself. After practicing this, you can perfect it to a science. lets just say the rain stopped, Dead started to play, i got real close and all my friends who turned around were very jealous.....Mediation Works!
My first year mistake was mistaking my friend's rum-filled water bottle (meant for sneaking into Centeroo) for a water-filled water bottle. Already too drunk for very early afternoon, I decided to rehydrate and sober up but chugging some water. Well, I missed most of Saturday including the Dead but did wake up to catch the end of Primus!

yea i hear ya. my philosophy is that at the end of the night, whats two advil going to do.

Yeah, I always take my "Advil PM" or whatever you kids are calling it these days!!! Does the trick everytime. ;D

Well, at this point last year I wasn't a Radiohead fan, but I am now. We went to their show, we were pretty far off to the side, I couldn't see the band, and I was exhausted. I didn't really have an interest in Radiohead, so I went to the cinema tent with a friend and watched Star Wars.
Bad idea. I wish I had seen their show!
Also, last year I was more of a fan of sleeping than going to late-night shows...this year will be a different story. I don't know when I'm going to sleep, but I will definitely be out late!

My first Roo was 05'. On Friday I forgot to slather on the sunscreen and ended up getting burnt to a crisp. I felt horrible; my entire body hurt and I had the chills really bad. So I basically stayed in the tent all night missing Friday nights shows.

REMEMBER SUNSCREEN! LOTS OF IT!
I will second that one!! I am one of those people who tans easily and never burn and I had to use SPF 50 last year. I put on the SPF 15 and started burning after about an hour out there. I still got a great tan
I regret that we did not stay for Dr. John last year - heard the first few songs then headed for GRAB - I also regret that I missed Tom Petty - but I was tired of waiting and it was taking too freakin' long for the show to start.

i got terribly brunt thursday last year. i forgot to wear sunscreen and went to senteroo till about 8 pm (got there around 1) when i woke up the next day my sunburn turned into a beautiful tan
last year was my "rookie" year to the roo because of weddings and other commitments on the same weekend every other year before.
that being said, my only regret was not getting there an hour or two earlier b/c i missed the 1st half of the wood bros set on thursday. other than that, i had a perfect weekend.

my biggest mistake was not getting into camp until 6 o clock, and by the time we had camp setup, it was about 8, so i had missed ALL of the friday performances
