Hi, I really know absoutely nothing about the Flaming Lips except that they tend to be really awesome live (according to all of you and others I have talked to). So, could I get some album recommendations and maybe some other info about them? Thanks guys, I appreciate it.

Their last 3 albums (The WAND, Yoshimi battles the Pink Robots and Soft Bullitin) are the closest to what you'll hear at a lips live show right now. Of those, Yoshimi and Soft Bullitin have the best songs. Their older stuff is much more noisy and rockin, and Clouds Taste Metallic and Transmissions from the Satallite Heart are my two favs there.

Awesome, I will probably like the more noisy, rockin stuff as opposed to the other albums. I will try to buy at least Yoshimi and one of the older albums.
Are there any live performances I should see, or any live albums that are good?

The Fearless Freaks DVD is a pretty cool documentary that spans their entire career. It has clips from their newer concerts as well as going over some of their more interesting sonic experiments (Boom-box concerts, parking lot concerts etc.). I don't know of any essential bootlegs or live albums, but honestly their concerts now sound almost identical to the studio CDs.

I'd personally recomend going straight to Soft Bulletin, it's easily one of the best albums of the nineties and as said before, you will probably hear some of the songs at this year's show.

Every album is fantastic. I started with Yoshimi. Give it a couple of listens, Wayne's voice can be difficult to get used to! You'll fall in love with them, everyone does!

Theres no point really in getting a live recording, you'd be much better getting a live dvd. The music isnt really any better live, if at all, its just the show they put on.
I'd start with Transmissions from a Satellite Heart or Clouds Taste Metallic. From there, go directly to Soft Bulletin and Yoshimi. That'll give you a sense of the revelation Soft Bulletin was.

i second that...soft bulletin is one of very few albums i would call "perfect"
just saw them last saturday and they played A LOT from Mytics
are the mods here cool with posting YSI's??? if so i will upload some samples from each album

Well I got Soft Bulletin, and I like it. It was the only album I had access to via my online music provider atm (legalsounds). I will get more albums that have been recommended by you guys as soon as I can.
A friendly suggestion: try a local library. You'd be surprised how much you can expand your musical pallette by just getting a library card. That's how I first came across Soft Bulletin.

If you really want a mindfuck, get Zaireeka. Holy shit, I just had an idea! What if we get 4 boomboxes at the Inforoo camp, and play zaireeka? That would be so awesome!

There's been some chatter about that here. I also believe the fine folks over at the FLips board are planning on doing so.

do you have an actual copy of zaireeka? i was able to find one in a local record store.
I've seen them in a bunch of stores. Just never really felt the need to buy it. I have a 5.1 mixed down copy, and 320 MP3s of it too. I think I'm going to be doing the Zaireeka deal regardless of what goes down at camp inforoo, so I might go search around for some Lossless copies I've seen floating around.
And for anyone trying to get into the Lips I'd suggest this.
Soft Bulletin-->Yoshimi-->At War With The Mystics-->Transmissions-->Clouds Taste Metallic
All their older stuff is definitely worth a listen, but you won't hear much of it live.

Thanks, but no thanks. I like to buy my music, but I really appreciate the offer.

napydred, thanks for the video, I enjoyed it.
thanks to everyone else who posted as well.
Good for you. So do I. Actually I use oink as a sort of rental/preview system. I download albums, listen to them, and if I like them enough, they go on a list, and I eventually purchase them. The rest I just delete. Because of this site I have not bought a bad disc in almost two years. There is nothing worse then being flat out dissapointed in your purchases when you get home from the record store. I no longer have to worry about this.
Anyone who does want an invite still post your email addresses please.

start with soft bulletin then yoshimi then ego tripping then the at war with the mystics then slowly back from that all the lips cds are great in there own way but if you want the craziest cd ZAIREEKA is it 4 cds 4 cd players same time.

Their latest album is actuall At War With The Mystics...the WAND is just a single off of it.
I would start With In A Priest Driven Ambulance, it is definitely their best album, not that they have a bad one though. Yoshimi is fantasic, and probably my second favorite.
The problem with going straight to The Soft Bulletin, is you might get a false sence of what the bad usually sounds like.
