^^^They are a pop-rock quartet from New England, they had a huge hit with "Stacey's Mom", and they are very impressive songwriters that many don't appreciate because they haven't looked past their radio singles. If you care at all for that type of music, you'll very much enjoy them.
I don't get the hate for Fountains of Wayne, if people say they don't like them they are clearly basing that solely on "Stacey's Mom" which is a shame because they have so many good songs to offer

if you are a fan of robert randolph and the family band you may like ryan shaw, i've been hearing him a lot of on npr stations and he can really sing soul as good as robert randolph plays the pedal steel
Elvis Perkins in Dearland. He plays Thursday. He has little to no mainstream notoriety. His music isn't particularly ear catching which, honestly, is really necessary to get people to hang around on Thursday.

What is this? Blasphemy! Elvis Perkins is amazing, he's a great songwriter, plus his live show is very high-energy and a lot of fun! Trust me - a string bass, a marching band-style bass drum, trumpets, and lots of other fun instruments. Plus, the whole band tries their best to put on a good show and make it fun. I saw him last month not knowing much about him (a friend recommended him) and fell in love! Please don't write him off!
I like the Hold Steady, but I'm sure I would've liked them more had the lead singer not been totally trashed when I saw them live. Maybe they'll be better at Bonnaroo. I do think they'll draw a crowd.
For me, I think it will be Dierks Bentley. I'm sure there will be some people at his show, but I just feel like the Bonnaroo 'crowd' won't get into mainstream country like that. But who knows, he might do something amazing and I might miss it. Although, I'm sure there will be many fratty types there....therefore there will be less of them to put up with at other shows!
No way The Hold Steady have the lowest turnout. They bring not only the rock, they bring the party. They've also got quite a few die-hard fans. I just saw them at the Southgate House on Monday night and they owned that place for 2 hours. The crowd was in a frenzy all night long...on a Monday night, no less. I imagine it's gonna be the same at Roo.... x 1,000,000 of course!
My guess is Uncle Earl will have the smallest turnout (assuming we're not counting cafe acts). I haven't heard anyone talk about them on this board or anywhere else, and I've had a tough time finding some of their music to listen to before Roo.
The most intriguing thing about Uncle Earl to me is the addition of Abigail Washburn (who also sings in Mandarin). Here's a link to their site with audio/video stuff as well. Can't say I'll be there for sure, but I'm a sucker for acts like that that may pull out something really unique.
Don't know much about Uncle Earl.........Nice to see another Knoxvillian around here!!!
I've listened to a bit online but still not sure what to expect.... but that's my favorite way to experience roo - there are some must-sees, but the curious-about ones are always the most surprising and memorable in the long run.
Glad to see another Knoxvillian myself! Surprised that there aren't more of us here...

Don't get me wrong. Not trying to write him off. Just stating who I think will have the lowest turnout.
I just think the lowest turnout for a larger stage will probably occur for a band on Thursday, and Elvis Perkins might end up getting the short end of the stick.
And I seriously doubt Fountains of Wayne and Dierks will have problem drawing a crowd considering the amount of exposure both acts have gotten.
I think Dierks Bentley has suddenly become interesting with Sam Bush playing with him. I also read that he will have many interesting quests playing with him. If you all think Dierks will play the same mainstream crap that is played on the radio I think you will be surprised. I think Dierks realizes this is his big chance to gain a lot of notoriety with a cross over audience. This guy may surprise us all, especially if he loads his band down with some killer bluegrass musicians.

it may work out that way for sure, but fow, well they are also known , but known negative,, so i guess it would be a wash... we saw Elvis Perkins opening up for someone and they were good l.. Cr****
Who the hell's Ryan Shaw? I'll bet none of you know either! His crowd probably won't be all that dynamic.
Ryan Shaw is the man! Everyone should catch this show. He opened for Robert Randolph and the Family Band here in Nashville not too long ago, and blew the roof off of the place. I met him afterwards and did an interview with him for my school's paper. Really cool, down to earth guy. I'm calling this to be the best Thursday night show.

You NEED to go listen to "This Is Ryan Shaw." He pays serious homage to late 60's/70's R&B, and is absolutely spot on. He's only 26 years old, but sings in a fashion way beyond his years. He's a true talent... I talk about him a bit on my podcast.

Thanks for the insight on Shaw - I'll be sure to catch him now! You saved me a bit of research.
Fountains of Ear Pain...hate to diss any certain band but these guys are the most worthy. Trust me...I've "looked past" Stacy's Mom and they still aren't good (to me).

Are you people kidding? Fountains of Wayne's turnout will be the highest of all these I'm sure, whether we want it to be or not. There are a lot of people at the festival who, unlike us, haven't researched every song by every band there, and will go to see Stacy's Mom alone. I would bet that 50% of people there will never have even heard anything by these other groups.

You're probably right... There are a lot of categories of attendees. One year there were these folks in VIP that had flown in, bought camping equipment, all just to see bob dylan. Once he was done, so were they.... we scored some great barely-used camping stuff b/c they didn't want to fly back with it.... You never know why people are there. But I'll doubt many are in my category (over-planning, prioritizing, researching, obsessive foolaroo).

Yeah I think my roo obsession is mainly because of this website, I want to check this site regularly just to hear some good discussion's on bands, any new activities announced, which bands to put on higher priority, and just learning tips. Thank you inforoo for feeding my addiction
"That's the big thing about education. People can be book smart, but not really intelligent about anything else. A lot of times they just taking in all this information and regurgitate it. It's much more important to process it and personalize it. To apply it to your world, to your life. You have to walk the walk, or you can't really report about it honestly."

I think they'll have a big crowd, but once the people at their camp sites hear their music, they will go see them. I think their crowd will get huge half-way through the show, since everyone thinks they only play metal.

But I got to go with either Fountains of Wayne or Franz Ferdinand. No offense to either of the bands, but I think (Deoending on the schedule, of course.) people will look at the schedule and think, "How odd. They're so mainstream. Why are they playing Bonnaroo." As dumb as that mindset is, I wouldn't be shocked if that happens.
