Jazz performers including Lou Donaldson and Doctor Lonnie Smith have been added to the sixth annual Bonnaroo Music Festival next month.
Donaldson, a saxophonist, and Smith, an organist, will perform in a tent designed to resemble a New York City jazz club.
Other festival jazz performers, announced today, include Jacky Terrasson, Stefon Harris, Don Byron, Ravi Contrane and others.
The festival is June 14th to 17th on a 700-acre farm near Manchester some 60 miles southeast of Nashville. The lineup includes more than 100 bands and a dozen comedians, performing across 13 stages.
Acts announced earlier include the newly reunited Police, the White Stripes, Tool, Wilco, Widespread Panic, the Roots, Franz Ferdinand, the Flaming Lips, Ziggy Marley, Dierks Bentley and Ralph Stanley & the Clinch Mountain Boys.

Jazz will plant its flag firmly in the midst of one of the country’s biggest rock events this summer when Blue Note Records erects a stage designed to resemble a downtown New York City club at the sixth annual Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival in Manchester, Tenn., from June 14 through 17. Under an air-conditioned tent with table seating and bar service on a 700-acre farm 60 miles south of Nashville, Blue Note will introduce audiences to jazz through live performances, panel discussions, and exhibitions of its photography and album artwork. Performers will include the saxophonist Lou Donaldson, the Hammond B3 organist Dr. Lonnie Smith, the pianist Jacky Terrasson, the vibraphonist Stefon Harris, the clarinetist Don Byron and the saxophonist Ravi Coltrane, among others.
I dont follow modern jazz at all, but anyone with the last name Coltrane has some big shoes to fill. Anyone know the possible relation, and/or if he is any good?
Very, very cool... NY Times was probably supposed to have the exclusive on this for tomorrow (in print) before Wednesday's artist announcement. I love that this special tent will include other initiatives like the panel discussions and album art.

Dang this is awesome news!
Lou Donaldson and Lonnie Smith are soul-jazz legends and national treasures as far as I'm concerned. I have seen Lonnie a couple of times with Will Bernard and he just oozes funk... Hopefully Will will be in his band...
Don Byron is also amazing! Hopefully he'll be doing his Jr. Walker project thing... They came around recently with a lineup including Will Calhoun and Will Bernard, which I somehow managed to miss out on... I would be so grateful to Superfly if they gave me another shot at seeing this lineup!
Oh my, I am getting all giddy about this. What tent will this Jazz tent be and where do you think it would be? This became a high priority for me now at Bonnaroo.

This is a really cool addition!
steveternal will be happy about this one, I'm sure
Haha, you bet your ass! Not only does this account for more jazz representations, but it also shows Bonnaroo acknowledging the musical inheritence of cities OTHER than New Orleans. Plus these are some very, very nice names. Ravi took his mom and dad's eastern-influenced ideas to an exciting place, and Stefon Harris just flat out rocks. This is simply unbelievable.
EDIT: ^^^I'm guessing this will take the place of the Preservation Hall tent, literally and otherwise.
maybe this is the "restaraunt" they were talking about. after reading the ny times article above it says its air conditioned and will have tables with bar service. definately will be interesting. especially the whole ny thing!
A drink minimium or maximum for that matter at Roo amounts something like this "Oh god, he just fell off his chair is mumbling nonsensical words and just peed his self......one more drink and he is done!!!!!!"
MANCHESTER, Tenn. (AP) -- The Bonnaroo Music Festival is adding a jazz tent to its sprawling festival, sponsored by the renowned Blue Note label.
Among the performers slated to perform at the festival, scheduled June 14-17 on a 700-acre farm 60 miles southeast of Nashville, are Stefon Harris, Ravi Coltrane, Robert Glapser, and Jacky Terrasson, according to a statement released Monday.
Though jazz performers have appeared at the event in previous years, the festival is known primarily for its rock acts. Last year, Elvis Costello, Radiohead, and Tom Petty were among those who played to approximately 80,000 fans.
The acts slated to perform this year include the newly reunited Police, the White Stripes, Tool, Wilco, Widespread Panic, the Roots, Franz Ferdinand, the Flaming Lips, Ziggy Marley, Dierks Bentley and Ralph Stanley & the Clinch Mountain Boys.
DownBeat magazine will present panel discussions on jazz June 15-16 with jazz musicians and others who will discuss legends such as Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane.
Blue Note Records will sponsor the air-conditioned jazz tent, called "Somethin' Else." Photography from the label will be on display.

I saw Lou Donaldson and Lonnie Smith together last Thanksgiving and it was incredible. Lou is an old master on the sax and Dr Lonnie Smith plays a mean Hammond B-3 organ. I highly recommend them.

Aw effin yeah... Dr. Lonnie Smith and Ravi Coltrane... I dont believe it until I see it. With the yard dog taking over Preservation Hall I think this will take the place of the Kat Nap.. I think. Then again they could just build a new one.
