This tent is going to be sick! Stanton Moore Trio, Medeski & Martin & the Philidelphia experement!!??!! And I was just thinking that Bonnaroo needed some more funky jazz this year.
For those who don't know, the Philidelphia Experement is the jazz project ?estlove did before the Roots. I just might spend the whole weekend in this thing (yeah right, too much good stuff going on).
John: We don't even understand our own music Spider: It doesn't, does it matter whether we understand it? At least it'll give us . . . strength John: I know but maybe we could get into it more if we understood it
I am going to be hitting this tent for sure. I'd rather see some live jazz than a jam band... Just has a totally different feel. Sitting down with a cold cocktail while watching some jazz legends will be unreal.

^^^Yeah, in all the excitement I don't think anyone mentioned that this was officially announced on the Bonnaroo site:
---------------------------------------------------- Spotlight: Somethin Else powered by Blue Note Records
We are proud to announce that have teamed up with Blue Note Records to present Somethin’ Else, a dedicated Jazz club curated by Blue Note Records.
The first event of its kind, Somethin’ Else aims to create an authentic Jazz club atmosphere in the middle of the largest outdoor rock festival in the United States, and to introduce the Bonnaroo audience to Jazz through live performances by legendary and up-and-coming artists, panel discussions about Jazz History, and exhibits of classic Blue Note Records photography and album artwork.
The legendary jazz label along with festival organizers selected an outstanding line-up from the Blue Note Records artist roster and beyond. Performers will include legendary artists such as saxophonist Lou Donaldson and Hammond B3 organist Dr. Lonnie Smith, established artists such as pianist Jacky Terrasson, vibraphonist Stefon Harris, clarinetist Don Byron, and saxophonist Ravi Coltrane, up-and-comers such as pianist Robert Glasper and guitarist Lionel Loueke, and crossover artists such as the Scott Amendola Band featuring Nels Cline, Stanton Moore, Billy Martin and John Medeski, and The Philadelphia Experiment.
DownBeat magazine will also present afternoon panel discussions on the Somethin’ Else stage in between music sets on June 15 and 16, with various prominent musicians from the Jazz world and beyond discussing the music and its legendary figures, including Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, and John Coltrane.
The Somethin’ Else, which will be designed to resemble a downtown New York City Jazz club, will be housed in an air-conditioned tent with table seating and bar-service for patrons. The tent will be decorated with the classic Blue Note Records photography of Francis Wolff and album artwork of Reid Miles.
SOMETHIN’ ELSE 2007 LINE-UP:

...I love the idea of the Jazz club-style tent, but it will be weird walking in there dirty, dusty, shirtless, barefoot, etc...
i just hope this doesnt turn out to be like the comedy tent where you have to wait on line for hours to get in. i definately want to check out a lot of whats goin on in here. i also now am wondering if medeski & martin will be late night in one of the main tents or in this tent late night. regardless it shall be awesome.

they were saying it was late evening, everyone here just assumed it was late night.
I am really excited about this addition. This is a big upgrade from that Preservation Hall tent (not like there was anything wrong with it ) that they had last year, thats for sure!
I have only heard of Lonnie Smith out of the bunch besides Medeski &Martin,Stanton Moore trio, and the Phildelphia Experiement, but that won't stop me from check these guys out. This will make me feel amost at home with the NYC nightclub feel.

Album recommendations???
I've only got a couple.
Stefon Harris: "Black Action Figure" or "Evolution" Stanton Moore: "Flyin' the Koop" or "III" Lou Donaldson: "Blues Walk" Medeski and Martin: I assume people are pretty much familiar with them... but on the outside chance you aren't I'd strongly recommend the MMW albums "It's a Jungle in Here" and "Combustication"

I'm not sure how many people on this board are hardcore jazzers, but I'd seriously like everyone to check out this tent. Most of the bands are in the free jazz, jazz rock, or jazz funk style; these styles are all really accessable to guys that like jam bands. I found a bunch of youtube links to a few of my favorite acts from this tent. Check em out, especially if you are into funk/jam bands. ( I didn't post anything by Medeski/Martin since I assume most people are familiar with their brand of bruhaha).
Damn, this sounds great in theory. Like everyone else is saying though, hopefully, this will not be like the comedy tent with the lines. Hopefully, people will be playing multiple times during the weekend so you get a couple chances to catch them. I guess in that respect, I hope that it is like the Comedy Tent.
Do you guys think that we will get an actual schedule for the artists, or do you think that they are just going to show big blocks of time on the schedule like last year's Preservation Hall?
And now I have more of a suspicion that the VIP party band is going to be jazz orientated. Which is nice.
Stanton Moore and Will Bernard have backed up Lonnie Smith in the past, and those same 2 also have a side project with Donald Harrison called MG5 (formerly known as Frequinox).
Throw ornette, medeski and martin into the mix and the possibilities for different jawdropping lineups are almost endless.
