So here is the deal, I guess you could say I am ore of an Alt. Rock/Indie Rock type of music fan. I like all types but most of what I listen to falls into those catagories. I have been to Coachella 5 times and this will be my 2nd Bonnaroo. So what I would like to know is, who are some of the bands playing at Roo this year that I should start to listen to that fall more in the catagory of "Jam Bands" or whatever. I already know plenty about bands like Kings of Leon, Wolfmother, Franz, Hot Chip, White Stripes, Cold War Kids, and Girl Talk, and obviosuly the headliners. It's the other acts I really know nothing about. So if any of you could reccomend some bands and and album or 2 by the band, I would appreciate it. Looking forward to another great Roo.

hi i would first of all recommend STS9 - other peeps on the board such as xiophoid420 and lakai2788 and others will help you with albums
the other band I would suggest to you is the Black Keys - ive been listening to the Magic Potion album alot and it is just really good... (my fave song is Strange Desire)
I know this thread is for 'Roo bands, but I want to offer this band to you based on your musical taste. The band has broken up (I think), but three years after hearing them live, their CD is still the first CD I listen to for pure rock joy.

Dr.Dog - Easy Beat Black Angels - Passover
Not really Jam Bands like you wanted but great bands to see for sure. Saw Dr.Dog in 05 and have been diggin on em ever since. And The Black Angels are my dark horse for this fest (my must see on thursday). I saw them in detroit a few weeks back and they rocked it. That is all...
I probably dont have to say the Flaming Lips, but they should be right up your wheelhouse. The last two albums, Yoshimi defeats the Pink Robots and At War with the Mystics. They are most likely playing from 12-2 on Saturday night so you can segue right from the Police into the Lips. I am really looking forward to that action myself.
Also, if you like Coachella type bands then Thursday might be your favorite day with bands like The National (opened for Arcade Fire on their last tour), or Annuals. Rodrigo Y Gabriela do alot of indie covers live like Radiohead.
I second the Tortoise and Brazilian Girls recommendations, specifically those albums already stated, but I like the other Brazilian Girls as well - Talk to La Bomb.
If you like Girl Talk, I would think that you like hip-hop and djs, so check out the Roots (any of their past albums) and look into finding a live Shadow DJ set.
You probably already know about Spoon and Ween but if not then check out their stuff. I am not too knowledgeble on the best Ween Album, but Spoon - Kill the Moonlight, Girls can Tell, or Gimme Fiction are all really good.
ok so from the ones not mentions i say go for the philadelphia experiement self titled album they are a pretty good jazz group just added.. Also Damien Rice has a pretty good voice and his Album O is some of his best work.. Also I think Old Crow Medicine has a cool sound to its a little country and i dunno a little drinking music also self titles album is good. Last im sure you heard of him but Ben Harper and my fav album is his live album Live at Mars really has to be one of my fav albums

I'm shocked (shocked!) no one has mentioned Gov't Mule. Warren Haynes is a guitar god, playing a bluesy, slide that just wails. He's been a back bone of most of the big current jam bands (Dead, Phil & Friends, Allman Brothers).
John: We don't even understand our own music Spider: It doesn't, does it matter whether we understand it? At least it'll give us . . . strength John: I know but maybe we could get into it more if we understood it

i tend to fall in the same catagory as you do Shotglass... Bonnaroo is the only place that i feel like myself, because i am so much more than indie rock.
Check out:
STS9 (you wont be dissapointed) Galactic (and if they do the hip - hop late night my effin head will explode)
Well, I don't have many suggestions on specific bands, as I am not that knowledgeable about jam bands myself. However, if you're on imeem, do a search for Bonnaroo, there are a couple of really good 'sampler' playlists (maybe put up by inforoosters?) that might turn you on to some jam stuff. They will get you excited for Roo, at the very least!

Check out Gov't Mule!!
Definately. Mule is a hybrid of old blues rock bands. They sound like/fall between a mixture of Cream, Led Zeppelin, Allman Brothers, and Black Sabbath. I have no doubt that you will be rocking at the Flaming Lips, but Mule will for sure still be playing for a couple hours after the Lips finish. If you like Wolfmother, you should like Mule. Check out the Deep End Volume 1 for them at their most accessible, or the Deepest End if you want to hear them live.
STS9-Dance/jam/space etc. band. They will pretty much be playing literally all night late night on Friday. So some point during the night you should head over and check them out.
Ben Harper-Check out his newest, Both Sides of the Gun (he will probably play the most off this album), and check out Fight For Your Mind (IMO his best).
Check out Tortoise and Hot Chip for a more electronic feel to your Bonnaroo.
For Hip-Hop check out Aesop Rock, El-P, and the Roots.
Thursday night you have a bunch of bands that are all solid as well: The National, Black Angels, The Annuals, and Clutch.
while i was adding bands to my bonnaroo playlist i ran into this band benzos and they are playing in the cafe. They have this cool sound and i really think anyone would like them. check out the myspace for some of their music. www.myspace.com/benzos

Highly recommend North Mississippi All-Stars. For a trio, they have a really "full" sound, and their music is very diverse, sometimes ranging from blues to hip-hop to funk to hard rock to jazz...sometimes in the course of just one song.

I appreciate all of this you guys. I have been listening to The Flaming Lips since I saw them OPEN for Candlebox back in 95. Yeah, open. Love 'em. These are all great suggestions and I can't wait to listen to all of the bands. So if you have any other bands, whether they are playing at Roo or not, love to hear about them. I am reallyinto bands like The Secret Machines, Kings of Leon, MMJ, Arcade Fire, Hot Chip, Muse, Bloc Party, The Early Years, Silversun Pickups, etc.. As far as "Jam Bands" go, I like the sound of Widespread over the sound of The Dead. I know that might be blasphemy on these boards but that's just my taste. So whatever ya got, keep 'em coming!!!!

I have "Shake Hands with Shorty" which is good (Grammy nominee), a buddy of mine has a few others that curled my toes as well, but I didn't catch the titles. They were in town a coupla months ago...very impressed. Electric washboard solo? Trippy.
Ok, this is waaaaay out there and they're not playing at roo, but if you're into serious percussion...
Savage Aural Hotbed from Minneapolis is Japanese Taiko influenced but they play with power tools, oil drums, saw blades, etc. It's a fascinating show to say the least. I don't know how far from Mpls they tour (they've played in WI & IA), but if they ever venture to Chicago, I'd recommend seeing them. ;D
You can download their older albums for free at their website:
