This year I dont recognize as many bands, so I figured I would just journey around and take in all the new music... to me. I traditionally listen to rock but I love a lot of jazz music and blues. I remember one band that played in one of the cafe's last year, but I havent the slightest clue who they were. I plan on spending a lot of time in that Jazz cafe this year, anyone else? I'd like to check out some new artists before I get there so if anyone has some suggestions, im all ears. I've checked out some of what I have seen listed and liked most of it so far

The "Something Else" Stage line-up is fu*king great! Look at it! I still cannot believe it is for real. I'll probably camp out there.

Got that right. Something else is sure to be a regular stop on my way between This, That and The Other. I'll be catching The Philadelphia Experiment and Stefon Harris for sure. Just wish Liquidrone and The New Orleans Bingo! Show were there again, that was good times.

The jazz is covered. No doubt about that. But there isn't a true blues act is there? Lots of bands that play some blues (Mule, NMA, WSP, Ratdog, even White Stripes). Mavis and "Blood" can get pretty bluesy, too. But is there any single artist or group who you would say is primarily a blues act?
Don't take this as a complaint. It's not. There are more wonderful acts than I can possibly catch. I'm far more worried about the conficts than who's missing.
This is some of the best news I've heard yet this year. First we get a big addition with Ornette and now this? Freakin sweet, I'll be hard pressed to ever leave that tent, lol. BTW, how is Ravi Coltrane? I see he's John's son, so the genes help him out?

I haven't tracked down his CDs yet, but a friend of mine has jammed w/ Ravi at a jazz clinic and said he is an awesome player. He also mentioned the guy is cool as hell, and doesn't come off as being a child of music legends. Just a very cool guy and a funky sax player. I can't wait to hear him.
John: We don't even understand our own music Spider: It doesn't, does it matter whether we understand it? At least it'll give us . . . strength John: I know but maybe we could get into it more if we understood it

Stanton Moore, Medeski and Martin, and Philidelphia Experiment are the only ones in the Somethin' Else tent that I'm really familiar with, and they're all phenomenal, highly recommend them. I'm sure the others are all worth checking out too, I'll probably spend a good amount of time in the jazz tent so long as there aren't too many other schedule conflicts

Would someone who is a jazz aficienado please give a breakdown of the must see performances in this tent? I already know about the Philly Experiement (wont miss that at all) and Medeski & Martin (they throw down and this has been in the making for a long time) but I want to know more about some of the other guys. What kind of Jazz the other bands play (uptempo, free jazz, calm jazz, etc)? I am really excited and if there are any bands that just do not play too often ever, it would be cool to say that I got to see them live in my lifetime. Thanks in advance, and maybe soon I will be a jazz fan (have not been to big on it till now after getting a few glimpses of it from people).
"That's the big thing about education. People can be book smart, but not really intelligent about anything else. A lot of times they just taking in all this information and regurgitate it. It's much more important to process it and personalize it. To apply it to your world, to your life. You have to walk the walk, or you can't really report about it honestly."

I'm no afficionado, but I've been listening to James Blood Ulmer's latest release: Bad Blood in the City. It's very bluesy. Some covers (Howlin' Wolf, Willie Dixon) and some original stuff about Katrina and the response. Very raw, very emotional stuff.
I'm also pretty excited about Dr. Lonnie Smith. I'm a big fan of the Hammond B3 and, now that Jimmy Smith has passed away, Dr. Lonnie (no relation) is probably the elder statesman of the instrument. He plays it smooth and more than a little funky. He'll be the one sporting the turban.
