ACE IN THE HOLE!
I knew there was a trick or two left up their sleeve. I figure they announced it because, well . . . when John Paul Jones is going to be at your festival, you want people to know about it.

Man, it's so crazy. And it totally validates everyone who was saying they had a sneaking suspicion that Superfly still had a little something. This has the potential to be the greatest show I've ever seen.
It's moments like this that I know why I put full faith in AC and Superfly in the direction bonnaroo's going. Six years and they still know how to surprise us.
It was mentioned earlier but it is interesting that this is a trio.
I know that last year AC/Superfly tried to get a superjam going for a "Band of Gypsies" power trio with Claypool on bass, ?uestlove on drums, and either Trey Anastasio or Ben Harper on guitar. But the whole thing fell through and Superfly scrapped the idea and put in GRAB instead.
I wonder if this is the same as the Band of Gypsies idea, or maybe a spin-off of that idea.

How can anyone talk nuts about JPJ? Seriously I respect you Ziggy, but damn! He is only overlooked as a bassist because everyone in his band was more famous than him. He is always the last Zeppelin member most people know/mention.
That being said, there was a poll in England about a year or so ago picking the best musician at the four traditional spots (Singer, Guitarist, Bassist, and Drummer). The results came back as follows:
Singer: Robert Plant Guitarist: Jimmy Page Drummer: John Bonham Bassist: John Paul Jones
A random poll picking the best at their four different instruments picked out Zeppelin! GREATEST.ROCK.BAND.EVER!
Seriously go listen to some Zeppelin again, and don't focus on Plant's voice, Page's guitar, or Bonham's drums. There honestly are some nasty bass lines throughout Zeppelin's music.
I hope you enjoy SCI though. I just think you're crazy.

JPJ is definitely good and underrated, but on a skill level Victor and Les can lay down way sicker beats then him. I think JPJ's strength wasn't necessarily on bass, but fleshing out the Zeppelin sound in general. I also hope they mostly play Zeppelin tunes for this, because I'm seeing Bustle in Your Hedgerow a few days after roo, so those could be similar shows and it wouldn't suck as much to miss this. Don't worry, i think your crazy for missing SCI's last bonnaroo show. ;D

Fair enough. Maybe we're both crazy a little? 7 days!!!!!
well i can see how some people would be interested in this but in the end it 3 dudes who dont play together throwing together some covers. sci is putting on killer shows lately and its their final tour. i dont see any comparison between the 2. easiest decision of the weekend for me. dont get me wrong i wish i wasnt going to miss the superjam. it will be a good show and i wish i could see it. but im not upset one bit because sci is gonna be insane. fortunatly for yall the super jam will probably end a couple hours before sci so you wont miss out on the whole sci show. or sts9. whatever floats yer boat. to each their own. personally i think this years lineup has brought alot of people that arent familar with sci and sts9 but ben harper, questlove, and led zeppelin ring bells. i dunno. it dosent seem that exciting to me. oh well more room at sci!!!!! not everyone can like the same thing. and ill be looking forward to downloading the super jam when i get home from roo.

I woulnd't expect JPJ to spend the whole time on bass. As good a bassist as he is, he's also pretty awesome on the keys. He adds so much to a superjam - the possibilities of what they can play are nearly endless!

Never. Ever. going to happen, but could you imagine if Plant or Page showed up to sit in for a song? I think you would see a mass exodus from all the other late night shows.

(edit, cause I can put it better) Very well put! This comes in a long line of announcements-- Ornette Coleman, directors in the cinema tent, Galactic extravaganza, late night Flaming Lips, and so much more--, which makes the price I paid for my early bird ticket look more and more ridiculous.

ok just a guess but i think special guests will be jack white, warren hayes, robert randolph, tom morello, some of the roots, and if the page if the rumour is true.

I hope that the singer from Wolfmother comes to Bonnaroo a few nights early. I would be ok with him singing Plant's lyrics the whole set if they decided to go that way.

There would be a riot if there were no Zep songs played at all. However I really don't think they'll do a Zep-only show; that would get old fast, and it would pale in comparison to a real reunion show. Naw, I'm sure they'll have a nice mix of Zep tunes, classic blues, tasteful covers, and also the kitchen sink.

you know i was just thinking that superfly prob. decided to announce the superjam rather than keep it a secret because we really didnt get any incredible additions (other than the jazz tent additions which are excellent) so this is my reasoning.

I'm guessing some of those tasteful covers will include a fair dose of Band of Gypsys material.
John: We don't even understand our own music Spider: It doesn't, does it matter whether we understand it? At least it'll give us . . . strength John: I know but maybe we could get into it more if we understood it
If y'all think JPJ is just the LedZep bassist check out his latest solo "The Thunderthief". Nice mix of prog/jazz along the lines of Tony Levin Band/King Crimson. JPJ matched up with Harper means sick, wild, dark, amazing, life changing, never to be heard again jams. Here's a link: www.guitar9.com/thethunderthief.html I'm trying real hard not to be too over the top with this but this has the potential to be, to be, ah hell. F'n nuts.
