Ok. This is probably my biggest conflict for the weekend. I am not a Tool fan but i'm sure it will be an awesome show. On the other hand, I am a HUGE Zeppelin fan, and John Paul Jones at the Superjam (along with Ben Harper and ?uestlove!) makes me want to show up 4 hours early to stake out a spot. I want to be front row and center for JPJ.
Am I underestimating how awesome the Tool concert will be? Or am I overestimating how epic the Superjam will be?
You're doing both....Tool's gonna rock...so is superjam...you should see both...being in the front doesn't matter...it's not like they're gonna jump down and give you a hug.
100% go see tool... there will be plenty of time to stake out a spot if you are not blown away. even if you are blown away and stay the whole time. i think you'd be able to grab a spot at Superjam.
You should definately go to both if you can. I am convinced that JPJ will show up for Tool's set to jam No Quarter, OR maynard will show up at superjam.... Maybe both!!??
You may not be a Tool fan now, but if you see them live you will be! ;D

This is exactly what I plan on doing. I'm betting on being blown away by Tool, though. Besides, rumors are flying on the Toolshead site that JPJ may come out and play w/ Tool. Can anyone say "No Quarter?"
John: We don't even understand our own music Spider: It doesn't, does it matter whether we understand it? At least it'll give us . . . strength John: I know but maybe we could get into it more if we understood it
Agreed. You can easily do both. Last year we left Radiohead, grabbed a spot for the Superjam, laid out a blanket and chilled for an hour, then when GRAB took the stage, we moved up to the front. Easy peasy.
In my experience Tool can be pretty weird live. Their stage show is interesting because of the graphics and video and stage performers (read: contortionists) they use to augment the experience. The odd thing is that Maynard often stands at the back of the stage, almost out of site, and faces away from the audience.
Other that that.... if you've never been to a Bonnaroo before you will soon realize that there are no bag spots for the shows, the place is huge. So don't worry about it, you'll get to see everything you want.
I completely a thoroughly guarantee that you will not be disappointed if you check out Tool's set. Last time I saw them (Tuesday) they were hands-down better than in 02 (The tour in which Maynard generally stood in the back facing away from the audience). He wasnt anything like that this time....he was very active dancing around and really getting into it. Besides, Tool WORST shows are still amazing and better than 99% of the sets out there....and this is Bonnaroo....who knows whats going to happen?
And we all know how Maynard has a "country boner"....being in Tennessee could only mean good things for the set.
only thing im worried about is Moshing. Moshing and bonnaroo dont equal 4. Like a DMB i saw one year at hershey, people were crowd surfing . . . ? ? ? What??? anyway, if there is moshing, and im not feeling it, ill go and stake my spot at superjam. But, i am going to give Tool a chance. For reals real
Actually, people don't mosh at Tool shows. I've never seen anybody do it...its not really the right atmosphere. In fact, I think Maynard actually discourages moshing...so you don't really have anything to worry about in that respect.
In my experience Tool shows aren't about realeasing aggression like a lot of metal shows. For lack of a better word I find it almost spiritual, I could lay on my back and close my eyes and enjoy the whole show. Of course you'd miss the cool visuals if you close your eyes but thats why the band doesn't make themselves real visible. It's more of an overall experience.

I'm gonna bail out of Tool early to go to the superjam. I have a feeling after halfway through the show you'll notice atleast a quarter of the crowd leaving and heading over to the superjam.
"They won't break me because the desire for freedom, and the freedom of the Irish people, is in my heart. The day will dawn when all the people of Ireland will have the desire for freedom to show. It is then that we will see the rising of the moon."

I'll probably leave about 45 mins-1 hr left in the set to go to SuperJam. Hopefully JPJ comes on beforehand.
Please, everyone...stop worrying about Moshing. TOOL ISNT A METAL BAND. Tool just isnt like that. Ive never seen any moshing at a Tool show. I think if someone tried to start moshing at a Tool show, the Tool fans would break some face. Tool is much more of a cerebral experience than what many of you are giving them credit for. Yes the crowd will have energy...but the "good" type of energy. Its not the kind of energy that makes its viewers want to smash against another, its the kind of energy that makes the viewer want to embrace the person next to them for being a part of such a great experience.
Really, the moshing thing....stop worrying about it. All Ive heard about is moshing with regard to Tool....I never heard anything about moshing with Clutch lol....and clutch has much more of the right kind of energy for mosing. Tool....not so much.
Im actually trying to convince people to not go to Tool so there more room for me.........lol......so yes the tool show will suck, you will have no fun there, there will be a ton of moshing, it will not be a mind blowing, visually pleasing extravaganza, and your time would be much better spent anywhere but at the main stage. Hope that helps
Tool is far and away my favorite band, and I got my friend who is an old Phan into them. He in turn got me into The Mars Volta, who are now my second favorite band.
If you're a fan of excellent music, you'll enjoy Too live. Just go see them and give them a chance.
yeah, tons of moshing. Just lots of havoc in general. I hear maynard is going to catch crosses on fire and slaughter a goat on stage, and then wash himself and the crowd in its blood. And theyre going to play Bathory and Mayhem covers all night. I dont think there will be a light show at all, probably just 4 guys on stage playing tr00 kvlt blak metuhl....and worshipping satan.
...there will probably be a guest-appearence by George W. Bush too.

My plan:
If security allows us to bring our camping chairs into Centeroo, I will sit in the back and give them a listen. Otherwise, i'll probably skip their set.
