Wow, thanks for smiting me for my voicing my opinion. The show was a let down. The UFO thing was boring as hell. Wayne rambled and said the same nuts over and over, his voice sounded like crap, and yeah no one was into it because they would play a song, Wayne would ramble, and ramble and they would finally play another song. What he was saying may have been coherent, but it was stupid and trite. Does anyone really care what he thinks about the war???? No, because no one went to a political rally; people went to see them play music. There was a reason the show started out packed as hell and then there was tons of room to wander and it was not because of how late it was. The music did not go anywhere; any momentum they would have from playing a good song would be squashed from the long pauses between songs. The "sing a longs" that you mentioned did not exist. Wayne would cuss at people to sing, no one would sing, and then we would sit there and wait. I was incredibly excited about this show and was terribly let down. Smite away.
who gives a shit if hes chatty or not its a free country. everyone else says something along the lines of it. wayne just tells it his way. which really didnt bother me or every body past the soundboards. i would love to have the set for download or a cd or something. livebonnaroo.com i think does that stuff. also does anybody reamember standing next to a dude with a orange bandana on a tent pole?

This was the best show of the weekend, and I don't say that lightly with all of the amazing shows I saw. From the "soundcheck" of War Pigs to busting out Mountainside from A Priest Driven Ambulance to Moonlight Mile this was the only show where I felt like the band really and truly cared about its audience. Wayne came out early and said something along the lines of "Just hold tight, we're doing everything we can to make this the best Bonaroo ever...and it fucking will be!". His speech towards the beginning about how much their '03 show meant to them as a band pretty much summed it up. This show and Bonnaroo as a whole was so important to him and he tried so hard to try to give something back. Look at the way he handled the crowd: coming out early and talking, the whole laser pointer thing, the song choices, everything. It really was beautiful and touching. Sorry if I'm getting sappy, but I've never felt like this about a show before...it was a close to life changing as it can get. Aside from that kind of stuff, the sound was absolutely phenomenal (although I was right in front of the soundboard)...seriously, I think I could hear every note in the chords of War Pigs, the video screen was great, the setlist was ridiculous. I loved every single second of it, when the balloons were everywhere , lights were going nuts, confetti was everywhere, Yoshimi was blasting I just started laughing with giddiness (completely sober, mind you) and looked around to see everyone else doing the same thing. It was just completely pure and unadulterated joy and I've never been so sad to see a band leave the stage.
Sorry if that's a bit incoherent, I'm tired and that show still overwhelms me...it was just so beautiful.

I understand your sentiments completely - I just am not so good at putting it into words. I was not really a Flaming Lips fan going into that show and had never seen them before - I was familiar with some of their songs, but that show is one that I will never forget. There were a few times when I was almost moved to tears - I was also competely sober. I am very passionate about music and seeing great live shows is one of my favorite things to do (although I don't get to do it very often), and for me that show was a once in a lifetime experience.

i was so excited to FINALLY be able to see the flips. ive listened to them since the mid 90's when they were a totally different band. it may have been jelly. it may have been the bad days on the batman forever soundtrack. they are awesome. anyhow. i know the talking is part of the show but it did kinda put a damper on the late night. i had to run to the bathroom during mountainside and heard a little sugaree w/ bobby with mule as i was coming back to yoshimi 2. anyhow after that point i kinda felt like i was missing something at the other tents due to the talking. i couldnt leave though. its all part of the show. like was said above though the crowd was not very into it it seemed. seemed tough to get everyone to sing along.

I "give a nuts" if he's chatty. Everyone else may have something to say, but they don't say it when people come to hear them play music. It just seemed like the second he opened his mouth the cohesiveness of the crowd fell apart because he was talking about divisive issues, which imo isn't good for music. And please, by all means, keep smiting me for posting my opinion.

I'm not sure if its been brought up in this thread or not, however I'm pretty sure that Wayne was "on something", just like most of those in attendence; this being my first Flips show, I know I made sure to be pretty done up for the event, and other than him rambling ,caused by in my opinion "on something" , (which is alright with me) I had an excellent time.... On a side note: Anyonelse totaly freak when they rose the giant "Lite Bright Creature" up and started walking it through the crowd....

That's gotta be the dumbest sh!t I've heard in awhile. I take it you don't listen to protest music much....or music about religion....or music about sex.....or music about hundreds of other divisive issues. I guess if it were up to you all art would be bland and unoffensive.

I'm not talking about all art, i'm talking about music. If you think something is bland because it doesn't make people take one side or the other you probably don't appreciate bluegrass, jazz, classical, or any other numerous kinds of music. And no, i don't listen to protest music much, because chances are if someone's playing protest music or music about religion or music about sex, they're compensating for not being very good musicians. Obviously that's not always the case and there are tons of exceptions throughout history, but Wayne is not John Lennon. Do you consider Phish "bland and unoffensive (its "inoffensive" btw)?" Trey made a point of not mentioning religion or politics because he understood that it was counter-inuitive to try and divide people who had come to be unified through music. I came to bonnaroo to rock out and not think about the world for a while, I do plenty of that in my daily life.

Wow.... Ok..I never said music HAD to deal w/ divisive issues...I was just saying it COULD....It all depends on the intentions of the ARTIST. You said issues that may divide are BAD for music...a value judgement you placed on an entire art form because you don't care for it. You're entitled to your opinion, but that doesn't mean you're correct. You say controversy is compensation for poor musicianship...then say Wayne is no John Lennon. I guess he gets a pass because he was a f ucking Beatle. Compensating for poor musicianship? ever listen to Zappa much?
If Wayne wants to bring up the war because as an artist that's what inspires him at the moment why shouldn't he? He's not there to unify people thorugh music. He's there to perform. If you don't like it...leave. Wayne doesn't owe you sh!t.
...and for the record, I DO consider Phish bland. What I don't do is go on message boards bitchin about how the let me down and failed to meet my lame expectations.
John: We don't even understand our own music Spider: It doesn't, does it matter whether we understand it? At least it'll give us . . . strength John: I know but maybe we could get into it more if we understood it
I don't know where the folks were disappointed were at, but The Flaming Lips put on one of the greatest shows that Ive ever seen. I wasnt too far back, and almost in the middle (just to the right side of the divide) and the show was absolutely amazing. The best experience in the whole festival for me.
"...and for the record, I DO consider Phish bland. What I don't do is go on message boards bitchin about how the let me down and failed to meet my lame expectations." No, you go on message boards and get pissed when someone doesn't agree with you. And obviously Wayne isn't that inspired or anything because its clear that he's regurgitating the same thing he says each show. "If you don't like it...leave. Wayne doesn't owe you sh!t." You sound really aggressive and that you can't accept the fact that not everyone enjoyed something that you did. This is the end of my contribution to this discussion. I didn't enjoy it for reasons i've already stated and enjoyed the Mule much more.

I heard other artists mention the war or Bush...it wasn't solely the lips.
I also agree with both sides. I heard the concert from my camp, and I have to say that it did seem he talked far longer than a crowd's attention span will hold (especially that late at night). I've seen them a few times before, and they are talkers...but I like that. Guess it's personal preference.
That being said, The FLips rule the world and will always be my #1! ;D

Personally, I think Wayne could walk up on stage and read the Bible and throw in songs with those kinds of visuals and I'd still say it was one of the best shows ever.

Just so you know man. I've met Wayne before and he's always like that. He's just a very very eccentric happy for life kinda guy which makes it seem like he's messed up but from what I've heard he's not really that into drugs at all.
And IMO this show still didn't top there 2003 show. That was the best Lips show I've ever been to! Still a really good show though. The Vein Of Stars Laser Phenomenon was probably one of the coolest things I've ever seen in my entire life. Probably looked much better to me with my fully secured spot up front in the middle between the soundboard and the stage. Damn what a show though. Love The Lips!!!!!!
P.S. If anyone could turn me on to Jesus it would be Wayne!

As an "old timer" (Wayne's words, not mine) who has been seeing this band since 1990, the Lips finally topped their 1996 Maxwell's show in Hobboken NJ... never thought that would ever happen, but then again, it's Roo after all so all bets were off, and I am once again their #1 fan Here's a little Balloon Chaos for y'all...

i know the guitarist is clean now, but used to be a heroin addict. i dont know if wayne does drugs or not, but if you read they're biography im sure itll tell you.....which i might have to buy

In the movie "The Fearless Freaks" Wayne mentions that even though his fans/bandmates/siblings have always been into drugs, he was never really one to take a lot of drugs. I remember a friend saying after the Lips' 2003 Bonnaroo show that they though Wayne must have been really messed up, but after seeing the lips a few more times he realized Wayne's just like that all the time. Plus he's such a perfectionist with their stage show and everything I doubt he would chance missing a cue or something just because he wanted to be high on stage.

Wayne used to dabble, not so much these days... Steven, the guitarist (is that what they are calling him these days?) was and is a major junkie... as far as I know he's been clean for a few years now. Check out "The Fearless Freaks" documentary for more on his Heroin madness... very sad, and very fascinating at the same

Steven Drozd used to do heroin. He's since quit.
Wayne doesn't do drugs. (Don't know about Michael...)
Freakin awsome show. My first time seeing them live so i made sure to get close to the action. Near the sound board
I could see how is banter would be 2 long for some. But to me he reminded me of a friend or loved that is overwhelmed with happiness and rambles a bit to long ;D
Nothing but smiley spaced happy ppl around giggling and playing with laser pointers
i was in a great spot for the lips show, got there right as the police started and scored a place along the middle divider about halfway between the stage and sound booth, here are some photos i took, click the thumbs to enlarge, o yeah and this show was fantastic no dought highlight of the weekend.
I know waynes vocals arn't the best, but he more than makes up for it with his presentation.....and yes he talked a bit, but I enjoyed his words because quite frankly, the Man just cares SO much about everyone. He has an enormous heart and it was SO good to feel that come through out of his music in front of tens of thousands of folks. to me thats what it is all about. It's easy to point out the things that need to be fixed in this twisted world, but Wayne puts on his show and tries his damndest to show everyone how easy happyness can be. The Flaiming lips show was very special to me..... oh and the "do you realize" at the end.... Goose Bumps
Wonderfully put! Karma for you! ;D (and some of you others here with good posts, when i can! )
First time seeing them and probably one of the best experiences in my life!
flips flips flips. after listening from camp to the sting(k) show we headed down to the which stage. approaching and anticipating, making our way thru the electric avenue. the conditions were just right. the show was movin along nicely..then.. waynes rant...grinding halt... but hey, you knew it had to end soon enough and then back on with the good stuff. and the better stuff and then wow. pow. dont want them to stop. ahhh another roo goody for keeps, peeps.
re:laser pointers, fun for flips, distracting as hell for white stripes. and many were discarded onto ground

I high-fived the Stick Man. It was the best high-five of my life.
This man came up to me just the other day, asked me I'd been born again. I told him, "I didn't think I had." That I had been rejected. But I think, Hell's got all the good bands anyway. And Bonnaroo.
