Please tell me you guys caught The National on Thursday night. I absolutely love their new album Boxer. I came in expecting a pretty laid back, great set that would be one of my favorite shows I saw that weekend.
Instead, they took all of their songs and turned them up 11 notches! I was at My Morning Jacket last year at That Tent and I swear The National had energy that rivaled theirs in That Tent. I've been to Bonnaroo the past 3 years and one of my favorite bands of all time is Radiohead, I'm an absolute Radiohead freak with over 600 Radiohead songs on my computer and Bonnaroo last year with them was a life changing experience with their show.
I would put National's INCREDIBLE show this year right up there with Radiohead the year before. The definite sleeper of the entire event. I took one of my buddies who is a huge music critic and he liked a couple of their songs and he was just as blown away as I was. I've never come back from a show so pumped before.
Did anybody else see National? If all of their shows are ANY WHERE NEAR as energetic as this one at Bonnaroo this year, then they are truly one of the most underrated newer indie acts out there.
I'm right with you, 89. I didn't expect them to rock so hard. I was also worrying that because they started 30 minutes late (techie stuff) that they'd get cut short, especially with all the Rod y Gab buzz that was going around. But no, they played the full set and blew me away with it. Good stuff.
Agreed. Their set was one of my faves. Loved "start a war" as the opener.... "Boxer" is definitely one of the yr's best releases. Also really enjoyed the Whigs (1:30am Thurs in the Troo Music Lounge). No way they don't become big rock stars soon.
My freind was telling me how awsome of a band they were and how great the lead vocals were, well I was a little skeptical but since evryone else had gone seperate ways I figured I may as well check out a band I had never really heard of...
Best decision of my life!!! I feel in love with the nationals after the first song. I was worried after the 30 min delay but they came out and ROCKED!!! I am so glad I went to that show.
One of my favorite shows of the weekend and a perfect way to start Bonnaroo... I went with two of my buddies that were very skeptical of them after hearing them on record, but both of them walked away blown away, as I did... Truly a magical performance
i was so pumped for this show. my friends took dica and decided to go on the ferris wheel instead. so i went solo and had an amazing time. the violinist was amazing and i love the lead singers voice. anyways it was my first full set and i wouldnt of started it off any other way
did anyone see the guy doing all those weird poses at the show? it was almost like he was doing tai chi or something. at one point, some random dude came up and started doing it with him - the guy didn't even notice or care! just kept on doing what he was doing. after one of the songs finished, he sat down and meditated for a while with his eyes closed.
i've got a short clip of him i can post when my computer at home is back up.

radiohead, thank you for the link... I too, was blown away by The National's set on Thursday, I fell in love with both their albums; and was looking ,very forward to their set and came away very impressed... I was also fortunate enough to score a ticket to this past Fridays' sold-out The Middle East show, which was excellent as well.....

they put on a good show, but i'm getting a little tired of the joy division-esque post-punk bands that have a singer that sounds like ian curtis...
Yeah this wins ignorant comment of the day (about the National) award. Try listening to more songs than "Mistaken for Strangers" then we can talk...
But yeah, Leonard Cohen, I would most definitely agree with...throw in a little Tom Petty and Nick Cave for good measure.
i was at the whole show - don't get me wrong, they are a good band, but bands of their ilk are about as common as a WWII first person shooter these days.

I'm sorry. You've seen a whole set...I'll totally forget my knowledge of the band's entire catalogue or my contrasting knowledge of the entire catalogue of Joy Division and Interpol and bow to your ill informed comparison.
Honestly, are we that lazy that we compare Interpol and The National to Joy Division? Joy Division doesn't sound like Joy Division album to album. Same applies to the National. And while Interpol definitely has drawn comparisons to Joy Division (it's hard to deny the influence on Turn On The Bright Lights), it's a lot harder to draw that comparison on their last two spacier albums (one of which is about to be released). Especially considering Banks has changed his vocal approach considerably since the first outing.
As for the ilk comment, I can't really challenge that. That's a vague word, and there are without question hundreds of bands out there that are better musicians than the National. But honestly, there aren't that many who sound LIKE The National. Honest to God, the closest comparison that comes to my mind is the Frames, but they're a little more earnest than the National.

I guess my question here would be, why weren't there more of those bands at Bonnaroo then? I'm not trying to convert you or make you a fan of The National, but there is something special about EVERY band at Bonnaroo, otherwise, they wouldn't be there. There may be other bands in a similar vein as them, but clearly they do it the best. As I said before on the board, Bonnaroo is about bringing in as many different styles of music, and not only that, but the best at all those styles. They were chosen to open for the Arcade Fire and have seen their popularity consistently rise for a reason. Plus, they're just more honest than any of the other bands in the genre. They write and play from the heart, and that's the sign of a truly great band.
