So, who else was at DJ Shadow's set? He always blows me away, and did so again. I had to sit through Aesop Rock and El-P to get in the front...but it wasn't too bad a time.
There was a guy standing in front of me who asked the security guy for an orange cone that was on the stage. I looked liked Aesop Rock had scribbled and drew all over it. Then, a girl that was two people over from him asked if she could see it. After he gave it to her, she hid it away and said "Now it's mine!" Seriously. She wouldn't give it back and then started asking everyone around her for sips of water and a cell phone to call her best friend. No one would do much for her after that. She even asked the guy she stole the cone from for a cell phone to use. I said "Better not. She might steal that from you too!"
I seriously wanted to put my cigarette out in her coin slot for being such a jerk....but I can't go around doing that stuff because I like to think of myself as a nice person.
"With a bit of luck, his life was ruined forever. Always thinking that just behind some narrow door in all of his favorite bars, men in red woolen shirts are getting incredible kicks from things he'll never know."

I agree. DJ Shadow was pretty sweet. I didn't wait at all and was up front. But then I got tired of being shoved around by a bunch of stupid frat guys, so I retired to the back. I found I could see the video better back there and the video was truly excellent.
I enjoyed Lateef for a bit (Mashin' on the Motorway is one of my favs), but he tends to ask for a bit too much crowd input, when really, the show should be about the performers. “I can’t hear you! I can’t hear you!” You know why? Cuz we already left and are back at camp asleep. I took off after about 5 minutes of this call and response fiasco.
I wish I could find a set list for the show.

Too much of his material with rap (I have nothing against rap, but, just too much) for me to really say I wasn't disappointed. Superjam was a big enough disappointment that even DJ Shadow's worst sounded great to me. One of my 3 must see shows, just kinda disappointing.

What disappointed you so much about the Superjam? I'm not hating, I'm just curious what you didn't like about it, cause personally I'd put it up there with my top 10 shows ever.

I thought the Superjam was insane, but then again we did have a great spot to listen to it and I heard there were tons of people spewing out of the tent so if you were one of those people I could see where it could be a dissapointment.
"That's the big thing about education. People can be book smart, but not really intelligent about anything else. A lot of times they just taking in all this information and regurgitate it. It's much more important to process it and personalize it. To apply it to your world, to your life. You have to walk the walk, or you can't really report about it honestly."
superjam, i stayed for the whole show. Musically, it sounded great. You will get no complaints from me of ?uestlove or JPJ,s part. To me it was Harper that really did it in. He can't hold either Page or Plant's jockstrap, sowhy have him pull double duties? No mean to offend any Harper fans, he really is atop tallent. He just butchered those Zeppelin songs, especially ''Immigrant Song.'' But as for DJ Shadow, his instrumentals where some of the best music I heard all weekend. I guess I fully didn't know what I was getting into (had'nt heard any of his newer stuff.).

I listened to the first 20 min of his set before I was let into the Somethin' Else tent to see Mago. It sounded great. He was rockin' the one-twos's. Something that I also liked was when he doing the final sound check and he started talking about Bonnaroo and music in general. He was just saying how 90% of the artists there were present because they love what they do, and the weekend means a much to them as it does to us. It was really cool to hear how down to Earth he was. You can get the mp3 from largeheartedboy.com and hear what I'm talking about.
seeing shadow for me was probably one of the great high-lights for me...ever. seeing organ donor performed live was incredible. he also is one of the djs responsible for inspiring me to go out and buy my own turntable set-up (an investment i'll never regret), so that alone made my 1st bonnaroo ever more special to me.
