So, I finally got around to downloading my Bonnaroo Sampler from Itunes. And I have never really heard any Umphrey's McGee before, they don't play a lot of shows in this area, but I REALLY like the song on the sampler. Is this pretty typical of the rest of their stuff? Can anyone recommend more of their stuff to check out? Do they play much in the Southeast? Sorry if all this is posted elsewhere....
What's the song on the sampler? I don't have it in front of me.
Umphrey's rages pretty hard. They are incredibly precise musicians. They are the only jamband that really dabbles with Metal. AT Bonnaroo 2004 (a coming out party for them) they played And Justice For all and just nailed it. They play great covers all the time like Baba O'reily or Another Brick in the Wall pt 2 and nail them every time. They do alot of the fast guitar tricks in Metal like tapping and other sh*t I will never be able to do.
I really recomend the Bonnaroo 2004 set. It is highly regarded as one of their best shows ever. They are strictly a jamband, but their jams are very technical, and they have many influences. Sometimes it's hard to tell when they are jamming b/c they will play off each others riffs and chords, and build the jams up like a composition or a song. It's quite unique and they are constantly trying new things.
I'm headed to Jamaica in December to spent some days at a Resort and see them and The Biscuits along with the Duo and Keller. It should be a GREAT time.
They will most CERTAINLY be back at Bonnaroo 2008, and if they aren't late night, I predict they'll be main stage next year.
Oh also, they don't play the southeast that much, though I think they may have just made a stop in Birmingham in April or May. They are chicago boys and play the midwest and northeast alot. They do play Nashville and Atlanta and New Orleans every year though, and have been at Bonnaroo 4 of the 6 years. They did just play Memphis for the first time in like 5 years, but it was a short, rainy, daytime set at Beale Street Music Festival.
Thanks! Bright Lights, Big City is the song on the Sampler... Nashvegas is close so if they play there at least once a year I should be able to catch them....
"Bright Lights, Big City" isn't one of my favorites of theirs, though I do like it. Another song that is similar in style and structure to that one is "Partyin' Peeps." Check that one out if you get a chance.
They just put out a new album, last year, "Safety In Numbers," if you want to go that route, as well as a double disc called "The Bottom Half" which is b-sides and outtakes from the "Safety In Numbers" sessions.
Yeah, I'm thinking I like the sound of the metal stuff even more....though this is fun....I'd like to hear the Pink Floyd cover....though it's hard to do good PF covers.....

Umphreys does awesome anything covers. One of them usually has a voice that fits the song pretty well, and obviously the music is spot on. Umphrey's is my favorite band, and i think they play the tightest true jams. If you like the metal stuff i'd check out "bridgeless" and "EAT". I was at their 4/20 show, and while its not one of their more popular show, its definitely the heaviest i've been to, and one of the heaviest i've listened to. If you are interested i could sendspace you the show. Also played an awesome cover of "shes so heavy" and "kashmir". "40's Theme" is also an awesome song, and my favorite is "Miss Tinkles Overture"/"Mulches Odyssey".
