Anyone catch these guys? I'm asking because I didn't. I was in line for their first set on Sunday, but since they were going to be starting to much later than scheduled, I bailed. And now I wish I hadn't because I was reading a review of their new disc in Entertainment Weekly (I know, I know...), which was very positive but more to the point they listed as the pianist in the group Lafayette Gilchrist, who happens to be a raging Baltimore jazz native and a part-time instructor at my alma mater, UMBC. In other words, I know the cat. So I gotta know, was Lafayette with the group at our beloved Bonnaroo?
And if you'd like scorching-hot funk-jazz for next year's lineup of the Somethin' Else jazz tent, vote for his group, Lafayette Gilchrist and the New Volcanoes.

Yep, Laf played with David. I also graduated from UMBC and actually played drums in his jazz calss for four semesters (you just had to love Studio 508 in Fine Arts...only at UMBC would they dump all that money into making a great studio and then leave in the ancient, noisy air conditioner).
Anyway, Laf...what a cat indeed. I actually saw Lafayette play with his trio yesterday and they sounded awesome. Its basically him, Blue and Nate from the New Volcanoes. I talked to him for a bit after the show and he said Roo was great and dug the whole scene.

Actually, I was an organic chemisty major. But I've always played the drums (hence organic-drummer) I needed some credits, so Laf's class was the way to go. He taught me so much. The best was "If the peoples is going north, and you know the sh*t is south, you go south.....you dig?"
And yea, Retrievers....what a crappy mascot. Again....only at UMBC.
Hey stevesie, I caught David's first set on Sunday, his saxophone playing blew me away, especially the crazy circular breathing he was able to do! I took some sweet videos of the show (big surprise there) which I'll be posting eventually, may be a week or so cause I'm going to Miami for the week tomorrow, will have to work on this shit when I get back. In the meantime check out these sweet Jacky Terrasson videos I took on Saturday, hope that will tide you over for a bit.
