So sunday despite my pre planning I ended up at the What Stage all day. I thoroughly enjoyed every band.
John Butler was great and had listened to him before.
Ratdog was awesome as usual seen them many times
Wilco They were excellent . I had never seen them or really listened to them. This was one of my unexpected gems for the weekend along with Langhorne Slim.
Widespread I thought was very good also and thought they covered Fairies wear boots brilliantly
so I caught Langorne slim by accident and loved it.
and was planning on checking something else out instead of wilco but decidced to stay because my spot was really good and was very pleasantly Suprised.
What bands did you love that you were not expecting?
"White collar conservative flashin down the street, pointing that plastic finger at me, they all assume my kind will drop and die, but I'm gonna wave my freak flag high." Jimi Hendrix

I thought Dr. Dog and The Slip were both excellent and I wasn't really familiar with their stuff before Bonnaroo. I also didn't really know what to expect from Flight of the Conchords, but they were hilarious.

the annuals were really damn good for being so young. i had to go and get their album and sounds pretty good. i was just amazed that the oldest person in the band is 22.

Dr. Spook in the Discotheque on Thursday night. Throw down!!
I would like to say Yard Dogs Road Show, but I had already seen them at Vegoose, so I knew what to expect. All my crew, who didn't go to Vegoose, was floored by them, though.

Mute Math was incredible. I knew absolutely nothing about them, but after the Black Angels I had a good spot and thought...What the heck, I'll stay. It ended up being one of the better decisions I made.
mute math was fantastic, but i knew they were going to be a great show so i can't really list em.
biggest surprise for me was xavier rudd, who i'd never even heard of before and ended up being my #3 favorite show of the festival. if you weren't rocking out in the tent with us, you missed out!
second best unexpected was kings of leon, who i'd also heard nothing of before bonnaroo. however, i'm always of the opinion that if a band is good enough to keep you dancing when there's no sound at all, they're worth listening to
Maybe I'll throw myself to the dogs, but my back's not to the wall Maybe I'll lay some bricks for the man, but the days just aren't that long So if I settle back and chill will I see far enough to feel the angel's dream? I thought it was the Story of the World!

i already knew about most of the bands even before roo happened, when the lineup comes out at the beginning of the year i start right away checking out the bands i am unfamiliar with, i have to say that since being familiarized with bonnaroo over the past few years, i have discovered hundreds of bands, most of them i like or even love, and well basically this is bonnaroo, so you know they are bringing it every year, and thats part of what makes bonnaroo the best music festival in the country, anyways, here are some smaller bands that i knew a very little bit about that were better than what i thought they would be:
the little ones jescoe westside daredevils jonah smith tortoise
i saw 42 bands in all, but i missed some really good things, and next year i'm going to keep the number of bands i see in the 20's, i want to see more fuller sets
other early-in-the-day, smaller bands, or thursday bands i really enjoyed: ryan shaw sam roberts the national the whigs dr. dog the slip the nightwatchman(okay so tom morello may be a little famous)
and my top 10 favorites:
10. The Police 9. The Decemberists 8. Bob Weir 7. Rodrigo y Gabriela 6. The Slip 5. John Butler Trio 4. Ben Harper 3. Gov't Mule 2. Wilco 1. String Cheese Incident
I second you jane on the Annuals, I found out about them just before Bonnaroo and what I caught of their set was excellent. And the fact that their oldest member is 22 (my age) just makes it all the more mind-blowing. I took some videos of what I saw, I urge all of you guys to check them out when you get a chance:
The Annuals: Carry Around Brother Unknown track (can anybody help me name this one?)
Out of all these Brother is my favorite, it takes a while to get going but what an amazing ending!
Rodrigo y Gabriela were excellent as well, but I expected that. I was pleasently surprised by Mute Math, although I didn't see as much of them as I would have liked. Hope you guys enjoy the videos, more to come in the future. peace
The Little Ones were my biggest surprise. They really got me started off the right way, and I only even saw them because I was killing time before Sam Roberts Band.
Also, I left JBT 15 minutes early to try and catch the tail end of Mavis Staples but I ended up seeing 30 minutes of Charlie Louvin instead because I liked what I heard coming from the tent, and man was that a good show.
The only other surprise was how much I really enjoyed Dierks Bentley. I was just there because I was killing time pre-Manu Chao and didn't want to go to the Roots because I wasn't sure I'd leave them in time to catch a whole Manu Chao set. The 5 songs I saw of Dierks definitely surprised me, his show had great energy.

I was intending to check out the whole Sasha and Digweed set, but went to Gov't Mule to kill time until it started. Needless to say the Mule show blew my mind, and I stayed for the whole thing. I had always kind of liked Warren Haynes, but never enough to ever go to a Mule show, now I can't wait until they come to town.
I had never heard a single song by Tortoise before but now I'm a fan. Also, as I was leaving the Lips heading for Sasha, I stumbled upon this great band called The Dynamites playing in the Troo music lounge. They were pumpin out the stankiest funk I heard all weekend.
Gogol Bordello is my pick. I was trying to choose between Gogol and Regina and I pretty much winged it that day as far what I was going to see during that time slot. I went with Gogol over Regina just because it was something different and I really didn't know much of their music going into the show. I was dancing most of the time and came out a fan. ;D
I had heard One Man Revolution, and was like...meh *tilts hand side-to-side
it was a little bit too much like Dylan meets Cash for me.
I expected the Tom Morello set to be some dragging honky tonk out in the heat, but The Nightwatchman really really impressed me! Very moving and very inspiring set, and if you were there, then you know that he was truly feelin us out there.
I forgot to mention the Decemberists. I wasn't really planning on seeing them, but I figured I had some extra time I might as well give them a shot. I kinda thought they might be your usual run of the mill indie band, but they seemed to stand out on their own and they obviously were enjoying playing at the festival.
