Just read this in Billboard's review of Saturday at Roo. I thought it was amusing considering a lot of people on this board thought it was kinda lame that Sting's son's band was playing.
"At least one band didn't make it to its scheduled Bonnaroo performance: Fiction Plane, fronted by Sting's son Joe Sumner, was stranded in Houston following a gig in Las Vegas and had to scrap its planned set just before the Police in the Blue Room."
So were all the anti-Fiction Plane vibes conspiring against their Bonnaroo apperance. Was anybody actually looking forward to their set only to be let down?
John: We don't even understand our own music Spider: It doesn't, does it matter whether we understand it? At least it'll give us . . . strength John: I know but maybe we could get into it more if we understood it
I liked the part in the guide where it said how they were determined to succeed on their own merits so Joe's dad wasn't even mentioned in press releases. Made me wonder how many other bands auditioned for the support slot on the Police tour?

Along with them we also had Billy Joel's daughter and Santana's son on the bill. Not to mention Ziggy Marley. Oh, and Ravi Coltrane. Apparently this year was the year of the musical progeny.

What if next year we get Zappa plays Zappa, one of the Lennon's either Sean or Julian, Jason Bonham, Zack Starkey, Jacob Dylan, Ziggy, the Allman kid, and maybe even Lisa Marie Presley
*i like coconuts, you can break them open they smell like ladies lyin in the sun** *Hell I don't even know where I am** *for now I must sit here and ponder the yonder: The herbivores did well cause their food didn't never run** *We listen, if it feels good We shake** *You made a big impression for a girl of your size, Now I can't get by without you and your big brown eyes.**
We were actually looking forward to hearing them live. I've been a mild fan for a few years now-- and I came to them completely on their merits, I didn't know he was Sting's son until I'd had the album for months. When their first album came out it was only the press who pointed it out.
I wonder if any of those down on their would-be appearance would have even given it a second thought if they didn't know about the Sting connection-- my guess is it'd be another Cafe-stage band that flew under their radar.
That said, I was actually pretty shocked to hear they'd be opening for the Police-- I wonder how they feel about that decision as it's so completely a 180 from how the band operated in the past few years.
Yea, we say Alexa Joel in the Troo Lounge and she sounded pretty good, but she cut her show short by 30 minutes cause of the heat.
Really? We were there for her whole set- she played all the songs on her album and two extra. I didn't get the impression it was cut short. Maybe i missed something.
We went over to see Fiction Plane thinking that Sting-daddy might show up. They were playing right before the Police took the stage on the big stage. We were told they couldn't make it, because their plane landed late at Nashville and couldn't make it in time to perform. I just wanted to see Sting upclose and see if he was all sparkly and stuff.
Yah, FP has serious plane troubles due to weather in Texas and their flight was delayed or grounded due to some storms. They had a really tight schedule playing Vegas the night right before so just a small delay and *wham* they missed their time slot.
They are pretty good live so it definitely was a loss not having them, but personally I have yet to find them appealing enough to seek out either their solo shows or their album(s) but my wife has seen them on their own and has one CD and says "they are actually pretty good."
Honestly, though, if they wanted to break away from the family connections this was absolutely the wrong way to do it. They are set up almost identical to The Police, Joe sounds like his father, and their name is an anagram for Infant Police so...............
