While I do think a Gilmore or Waters show would make a lot of peoples' weekends, I just want to go on the record as saying I never really cared that much for Floyd after Syd Barrett left the group. I don't think they're terrible, but I just could never get into it as much as so many others (and believe me I tried). Just my opinion, I'm sure I'll get a few smites for expressing it.

While I completely disagree with you (Pink Floyd is by far my favorite band and would give my first born male to see them) I will never smite because of someones opinion.
I would also take Gilmour or Waters but would much rather see Gilmour. But I'd gladly take all 4 of them =D

It's weird that people say this right here.
Here is a list of their albums:
* The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (August 5, 1967) * A Saucerful of Secrets (June 29, 1968) * Music from the Film More (July 27, 1969) * Ummagumma (October 25, 1969) (half live, half studio) * Atom Heart Mother (October 10, 1970) * Meddle (October 30, 1971) * Obscured by Clouds (June 3, 1972) * The Dark Side of the Moon (March 24, 1973) * Wish You Were Here (September 15, 1975) * Animals (January 23, 1977) * The Wall (November 30, 1979) * The Final Cut (March 23, 1983) * A Momentary Lapse of Reason (September 7, 1987) * The Division Bell (March 30, 1994)
Only the first two albums were made with Barrett, and those were obviously not their finest works.

^^^^ it's because they completely changed their direction and style when they let go of Syd. I love all of it, but for some it's just a matter of preference...
*edit*to say finest really depends on what you are looking for in your music, if you want true chaotic free form 60's era spontaneous psycadelic rock, you do not want most of the post Syd stuff. But, if you want carefully constructed epic cereberal journeys infused with note bending blues guitar that will blow your mind, then the post Syd stuff will be more your thing.*edit*
In any case, without Syd in the beginning, absolutely none of it would have ever existed in any form... God bless your sweet slippery pink soul Mr. Barrett, you provided the rock that became the foundation to all that I love about rock and roll
I saw Floyd 2 times with out Waters 87 and 94 or 95 they were great. Saw Waters afew years ago he was good but Floyd was much better you have Gilmore, Mason and Wright, but it's a better chance that Waters would come to roo.

I, unfortunately, never got to see Floyd so now I have no choice but to hate Branham. It sucks because I thought he was a nice guy.
alyroo, I didn't mean to upset you I'll send some karma your way I'm the youngest of 7 so they got me into alot of good music before I even started school.

Brahm, you are like my friend Paul, who's siblings took him to his first concert when he was 9, Floyd in '87... the poor guy has had to compare every concert since to that live arena masterpiece. Tough life

Lucky!!!
You sound like my husband. He had an older sister and permissive parents. He saw KISS, in full make-up, in 1976. He was six years old.

That's true (and in fact saucerful only features 1 Barrett song). I accually listened to quite a bit of Floyd (My dad has a huge record collection), and found I tended to like their older albums (Atom Heart Mother, Ummagumma) over the big titles like Dark Side and Animals. Then I listened to Pipers and was blown away. I couldn't believe it was the same band, and I soon discovered the difference was Syd. But to my ear, Pipers IS their finest work, if only because its the only Floyd album I'll go put on and really enjoy from start to finish. Honestly, I'd rather listen to either of Barrett's solo albums than The Wall. It's just my opinion, though, and I do enjoy a few cuts from the post-Barrett Floyd almost as much.

Hehe, well as long as your a Floyd fan! I hope you didn't think I was being to critical. I'm just speculative when someone says they liked Floyd when Barrett was helping make the music
Though my favorite Floyd albums would be the more pop oriented ones:
#1 - DSOTM #2 - Wish You Were Here #3 - The Wall #4 - Animals
I'm actually partial to Meddle myself, although I love most of their albums. I agree that the early stuff is very different than the later stuff. I do like the Syd Barret Floyd, I've even got one of his solo albums, but I deffinately prefer the Gilmour era Floyd. And Stallion, from what I've gathered about your taste in music, it doesn't really surprise me that you prefer the Syd Barret stuff. IMO Piper is underappreciated for the masterpiece it really was. Syd Barret may have been crazy, but he was a creative genius. I saw the Red Hot Chili Peppers last January and they played See Emily Play. I don't think too many people recognized the song, but props to the Chlili's for rockin' out some really early Floyd.

I so wish I could've heard that
That is very cool that they played that. I saw Robyn Hitchc0ck and the Venus 3 play that song earlier this year. Of course, it's not to surprising to hear Hitchc0ck break out a Barrett cover, but it was cool to hear.

did anyone see the Flaming Lips do most of Dark Side at the 03 roo?
I was there, and they didn't do most of the album. They did Breathe and Us and Them, w/ Somewhere over the Rainbow thrown in the middle for the Wizard of Oz/Dark Side connection. It was pretty sweet.

i think that show was the most exaggerated show ever. my cousin went and i heard from her for the longest, that they played all night, like 4 hr. in reality it was less than 2 hr., because theier drummer swears that they have never played over 2 hr. in their history. she also said it was the best show she has ever seen. that part could be true.
i have a live recording of primus doing the animals album. les comes out and says he ate some kinda tainted brownie earlier and had spent most of the day puking his guts out "but im feeling it now.. im definetly feeling it now"
kinda sad how the other band members treated syd i thought. apparently he was dosed against his will alot of the time and genuinely (sp) went off the deep end. "A Saucer Full of Secrets- The Pink Floyd Odessy" is a good book that traces the bands entire history. it definetly made me look at floyd differently
I'm by no means a Floyd fan nor do I particularly wish they would play Roo. That said, it's hard to be a music fan and not like something Floyd has to offer. The Piper at the Gates of Dawn is a pretty damn good record that's finally starting to get some credit for being breakthrough. Meddle and Ummagumma are both albums that I admire quite a bit, even if I don't love them. And The Final Cut, although virtually reviled by a lot of Floyd fans, is fairly underrated.
But outside of Wish You Were Here, I can't really get into the popular Floyd stuff. Dark Side, The Wall, Animals...for whatever reason, I can't stand those albums.

I've never really been a big fan of Floyd (Barrett or Gilmore era) and I've always been made to feel like there must be something wrong with me in this regard. I've given most of their records several (if not more) chances and it just doesn't work for me. I always heard that if if I listened to "Dark Side" or "The Wall" while under the appropriate "influence", I would change my mind instantly. And even though I have been in the RIGHT frame of mind on multiple occasions and still ended-up disappointed, someone always tries (over and over and over) to tell me that "this time will be different. gauranteed.". With the exception of one pretty interesting night listening to "Saucerful Of Secrets", they have all been wrong. I'm not saying that they are a bad band or anything like that, I'm just saying that they always leave me a little flat. Maybe it's just a case of the hype overshadowing the actual music for me. I don't know but, I kinda feel like there are much better bands that haven't/don't get near the respect that they have. Nothing againsy them really. They're just not my thing.

I love Pink Floyd, I have all of their studio albums. However I will say that Pink Floyd are one of the most overhyped bands ever. Meaning that most people only know about "Dark Side of The Moon" and "The Wall". And for people that need some material to listen to, to get Pink Floyd they must listen to those two albums. And then when they don't like them, they think Pink Floyd is overrated. Whereas that there is more to Pink Floyd than just Dark Side of The Moon and The Wall.
That being said, I would love to have Pink Floyd at Bonnaroo.

I love The Final Cut (though it's more of a Waters Solo album under the Floyd banner) ... thanks for reminding me, can't wait to get home tonight and crank it... it's been quite a while, and it's so much fun to sing along to! ;D
