Can someone explain why My Morning Jacket is such a hit? After reading all the hullaballoo, i instantly went to listen to some of their tunes and some shows from the archive. I dig 1 or 2 of their songs, but i can't get as excited about them as some of you seem to be.
I'd love to hear what MMJ is all about... point me in the right direction for some legendary shows i can download or some more information. I am in no way dissing on the band, but maybe there is something i'm missing... Enlighten me please! ;D

Well, as far as official releases... Okonokos, both the double CD and the DVD, is MMJ at the top of it's form. If you don't like that, you don't like them.

i appreciate it man, i'll attempt to check it out.
i can find the CD on Pirate Bay but not the dvd. can anybody send me a link to a dvd torrent of this... or can anyone rip it and send it my way. It would be like borrowing the dvd from you... not umm, getting an illegal copy.
well seeing as that you guys have good taste, i might run out and pick up this dvd just to see what it's all about. I'll give them a try, otherwise, would anybody be interested in purchasing a 1-time watched copy of the MMJ DVD! :-)
I also didn't get why people loved them so much.... until I saw the midnight show at Bonnaroo 2006.
Their live show totally blew me away. They are still not one of my favorites, but if I ever get the chance to see them live, I will be there.
that was not only the first time i saw them, it was the first time i heard them.
they were fucking AMAZING. they were also good at lolla this year - but not as earth shattering. i think they need the cover of darkness to fully rock out. but i did think the childrens choir was pretty cool
i think thier early cd's are just okay.. but the newer stuff is fantastic. they are a "live" band, to be sure.

I honestly got into MMJ by the albums (unlike some who were live show converts), the first time for me seeing them live was after Z was released. Okonokos is a greeeeaaat place to start if you are a live recording fan, otherwise just pick up "It still moves" or "Z" and let that marinate on your brain for awhile. I would like to think they are an aquired taste (arent all the good ones??), my brother didnt care for em much at first, but then BAM!...loves him some MMJ!
Anyways, to each their own, if you dont dig em, then you dont. There are plenty of things/ bands I've tried to give a chance to, but could really give two sh*ts about.

Same here, I was wandering from stage to stage in an euphoric dazzze, when I heard them in the distance... no album will ever live up to the show they gave us that night. When I got home I bought a few CD's immediately... needed a fix, and the albums are great... but... that night at Roo became one of the most intense I've had... in my entire life
My first run it with MMJ was in 03 at Field Day..or some will call Failed Day. Anyways, I caught some of their set in the poring rain and they really didn't really do much for me then.I also passed seeing them at CMJ (I left before they came on and later was told they were awesome) The next year I went to roo (04) and watch them play a couple of songs, but I was in a wandering mood that day and passed on the rest of the set.
A couple years pass and Z comes out and I figured I give them another listen and to my surprise I liked the album. I then saw them in 06 and was one of the best shows I saw that weeked..totally rocked that tent to pieces.

My Morning Jacket I was fortunate enough to have gotten into them back at the 2nd bonnaroo. There live shows are amazing. They know how to rock and its not too hard and its not too soft its just right. They are tasteful with their jamming they jam certain songs out and they know how to make a song peak, there stage presence is poweful from beginning to end. I have seen 9 shows now and next tour I'm going to do a 4 or 5 show run. This of it this way they have played multiple times with the Boston Symphony Pops orchestra, and the Chicago Symphony Youth Orchestra, orchestras don't just play with bands, those orchestras wanted to play with my morning jacket and they deserved to. To me they are the next 20-30 year band like Pearl Jam or Red Hot Chili Peppers
I've seen them 4 times. Twice at Bonnaroo ('05 & '06). IMO, they're the greatest live band on the planet. Seriously, other people have mentioned the epic '06 late nite show...I walked away from that believing that I might possibly NEVER see a more powerful, blissful, mind shattering/expanding musical performance than I had just witnessed. So far that has held true, but I'm hoping they get another late nite this year and somehow they top it. I wasn't a huge fan of their albums before I saw them live the first time ( I did like them though), but have since fallen in love with them. My best advice is to just go see them if you get the chance - I have a feeling you'll leave as a fan.
I too got into their albums first -- At Dawn is a modern masterpiece.
After seeing them live (six or seven times now) though, I can tell you that's the most common route for conversion. Bonnaroo 2004 was a religious experience. Everyone wants to SAY they were there for the whole set, through the torrential rain, seemingly inevitable electrocution, and MMJ's reluctance to leave the stage, but I know how many folks were there when the last chord was struck...and there weren't very many.
....and many were left wondering, how they would surpass that afternoon set on the which stage, puppets , lightening, and all. Until latenight 06, when just about every face in the tent hit the mudda effin' floor.
Steep yourself in them and let 'em get under your skin. Or dive right in live.
Otherwise-to try and put it into words is like dancing about a painting. It's all in yer HEAD.
MMJ Okonokos is how I ended up at Bonnaroo for the first time this past year.
My husband's best friend is a guitarist, and for his birthday my husband decided to research awesome guitarists, hoping to find a DVD of a band or performer he had not heard of yet. I casually knew MMJ, my husband and his friend not at all. He got his friend Okonokos DVD for his birthday.
We sat around with a bottle of wine and some corn and watched this DVD and all of us were floored, transfixed, converted. Let's add his friend is more of a Metallica/Pantera sort of guy.
I researched MMJ more, found their performance at Bonnaroo, and well, then went and bought tickets for Bonnaroo, even though they weren't there this year.
MMJ re-opened my eyes to all forms of music. It has been a snowball since - more concerts, more music downloads and live videos and being obsessed and enlightened.
But yes, like any band there are fans, there are people who feel meh, and there are those who don't get it. We surely see that in the Roo 08 performance polls! ;D BUt I think MMJ is worth a second listen, especially if live.

I'm a bit biased, but I've always felt that My Morning Jacket was our generation's Led Zeppelin to Radiohead's Beatles. Probably not a fair comparison, but that's just the way I see things.

I've always thought Floyd myself, though I'm biased too... but I like adding Zep to that! And the Radiohead compare works nice

I saw the 05 roo show and thought it was ok. I hadnt really listened to them before besides One Big Holiday. Z came out and I dont think i listened to anything but that album for about 3 months. Then I saw the roo 06 show and I was blown away. Since then they have became my favorite band. They are amazing live...yes but their older mellow studio stuff is incredible as well. Jim James might have the best voice in music. Listen to 'Acoustic Citsuoca' it will give you chills.
