I saw them last week and they were AMAZING. Excellent show and a great performance by the band. They even brought tears to my eyes. Can't wait for next year when they come back!

I doubt Roo will ever have a tribute band, no matter how good they are. Zappa Plays Zappa would be the only even minor possibility. And headlining, not in a thousand years.
Tthe bottom line is that they have had the dead as a headliner and regardless what you say they are just a cover/tribute band to the the grateful dead. Penguins i guess your also saying that theres no chance that dso will ever play roo

I don't think you count as a tribute band if you have members of the original band. Even if you don't have any members of the original, you don't count if have the same name I suppose, if that's a result of an evolving line-up. A tribute band is a band created specifically to emulate another, pre-existing band, playing only the original band's songs just like the original band played them. They tend to suck, though, from the posts above, this one seems better.
Don't know enough about DSO to say for sure, but from reading about them on wikipedia they seem pretty talented in their own right and, given that half of many jam band's repertoire is Dead songs anyway, maybe.
Dark Star Orchestra is amazing! i think they sound incredible. My oldest brother who toured with The Grateful Dead in the 80's-90's said that when he saw Dark Star, he closed his eyes and it was like being shot back 20 years and hearing Jerry sing and play....
regardless the best cover band out there is aussie pink floyd, gilmore loves them, he gave them permission to use his name and they played at one of his shindigs for him, nick mason has saw them and loves them and its a rumour that waters saw them and liked them also, and they are a huge touring band almost every show that they had in america sold out this yr and its almost impossible to get a ticket over in europe to see them. There show is almost better than any floyd show i ever saw and any of there projects besides roger waters
yes dso is awesome but grateful dead cover bands are a dime a dozen, i can think of 3 other cover bands that are just as good as them bein the shwag, cubensis, and workingmans ed

I guarantee you that a tribute/cover band will NEVER headline a festival. They might play, and that'd be cool... but headline?? come on....
I haven't seen the aussie pink floyd, but I just saw The Machine (another floyd cover band) and they were phenomenal... probably the best show I've seen since the FLips at Roo this past summer. But I would never suggest they headline Roo. A headliner's spot should be reserved for those who create AND write their own music, in my opinion.
Aussie Pink Floyd would make a really cool late night act. Think about it: lasers + dust = INTENSE visuals! It would be even cooler than Tool last year.
