Nearing the end of another year, I was looking back at how few concerts I went to in 2007. I only went to Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza for one day to see Pearl Jam & Modest Mouse, and saw Weird Al at the Ohio State Fair. That's it. This is far below my normal average for concerts in a year. (The low number is partly due to Pearl Jam not touring this year since much of the money I've spent on concert tickets over the years has been for their shows.) This then lead to me reminiscing about my best years for concerts:
2003 was the best year for me. That year I went to 13 Pearl Jam concerts (went to as many shows as I could get the time off to see, including following the band for nearly 2 weeks from Fargo, ND to Columbus, OH), and some Phish concerts including IT:
4/25 Pearl Jam – Cleveland, OH 4/26 Pearl Jam – Pittsburgh, PA 5/3 Pearl Jam – State College, PA 6/15 Pearl Jam – Fargo, ND 6/16 Pearl Jam – St. Paul, MN 6/17 Neil Young – Chicago, IL 6/18 Pearl Jam – Chicago, IL 6/19 Pearl Jam – Cincinnati, OH cancelled due to flooding 6/20 – went to a Cubs game while I was in Chicago because Eddie Vedder was there to sing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" during the 7th inning stretch 6/21 Pearl Jam – East Troy, WI 6/22 Pearl Jam – Noblesville, IN 6/24 Pearl Jam – Columbus, OH 6/28 Pearl Jam – Toronto, ONT - met Eddie Vedder in the parking lot after the show 7/5 Pearl Jam – Camden, NJ 7/6 Pearl Jam – Camden, NJ 7/9 Foo Fighters – Pittsburgh, PA 7/12 Pearl Jam – Hershey, PA 7/19 Lollapalooza – Pittsburgh, PA w/ Audioslave, Incubus, Jane’s Addiction 7/29 Phish – Pittsburgh, PA 8/2-3 Phish – Limestone ME - IT festival 11/29 Phish – Philadelphia, PA 12/12 Dave Matthews & Friends – State College, PA
2006 was a close second and included my second trips to Bonnaroo & California for Neil Young's annual Bridge School Benefit shows:
3/7 Nine Inch Nails – Erie, PA 5/9 Pearl Jam – Toronto, ONT (MMJ opening) 5/10 Pearl Jam – Toronto, ONT (MMJ opening) 5/19 Pearl Jam – Grand Rapids, MI (MMJ opening) 5/20 Pearl Jam – Cleveland, OH (MMJ opening) 6/16-18 Bonnaroo – Manchester, TN - Radiohead's set there was the greatest musical performance I have ever seen from any band 6/23 Pearl Jam – Pittsburgh, PA 6/24 Pearl Jam – Cincinnati, OH 6/30 Nine Inch Nails – Pittsburgh, PA 9/24 Roger Waters – Pittsburgh, PA 9/25 Tool – Cleveland, OH 9/26 Tool – Pittsburgh, PA 10/21-22 20th annual Bridge School Benefit – Mountain View, CA w/ Neil Young, Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters, Trent Reznor, Death Cab for Cutie
So what years were the best for other Inforooers and what shows did you see those years?
My best year was definitely 2004. It was during an extended break in my academic pursuits and I got around plenty.
My year started off with Wayne from the FLips joining the White Stripes onstage at their NYE show at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago.
I couldn't possibly recall all the tours I saw, but some notable ones were: David Bowie Brian Wilson's SMiLE tour Phish Bob Dylan Bob Dylan & Willie Nelson (w/ Dad for Father's Day gift) Aerosmith & Cheap Trick (w/ Mom for Mother's Day gift) The Cure's Curiosa tour - saw The Cure & Muse Pixies x7 (x9 counting festival appearances) Wilco x3 (x5 counting festival appearances; met Jeff Tweedy) Violent Femmes Ben Folds Andrew W.K. Blink-182/Bad Religion - only for Bad Religion, because lawn tix were $10 the Darkness Warped tour - I know I went, can't remember who played besides Rancid & Atmosphere
Coachella festival - Indio, California Radiohead/Pixies and The Cure/Flaming Lips were the headliners/pre-headliners. Also: Beck, Air, Cursive, Belle & Sebastian, Junior Senior, Kinky, Broken Social Scene, Atmosphere, (International) Noise Conspiracy, The Section Quartet (the people who brought us those "A String Tribute to ___" albums) and others I can't think of off the top of my head
Bonnaroo - no need to discuss; we were there
Austin City Limits festival - Austin TX Trey, Pixies, Wilco, Modest Mouse, Spoon, Elvis Costello, John Butler Trio, Dashboard Confessional (ugh), Cake, Ben Harper, Jack Johnson, MMW, G Love, Old 97s, the Roots, Broken Social Scene, the Killers, Calexico, and more I can't recall

My busiest years were probably in the early/mid '90s. I can't remember everyone I saw, but here's a few:
The Orb, Moby, The Ramones, Future Sound Of London, Suicidal Tendencies, Los Lobos, Mighty Might Bosstones, Live, Slayer, Rabbit In The Moon (2x), Godflesh, Dub Narcotic Soundsystem, Sasha & Digweed (2x), Ghetto Boyz, Delbert McClinton, Crystal Method, Fishbone, Bob Dylan, Napalm Death, Orbital (2x), Ministry, Lords Of Acid and GWAR...just to (barely) scratch the surface.
(I didn't say they were all good, but I think that's a pretty good cross-section.)

neiljam, are you from pittsburgh? I was at a lot of those shows with you! you are probably tied with my brother for seeing pearl jam a ridiculous amount of times. he moved to seattle just so he could see them in smaller venues.
that depends... every year since 2004 ive seen more and more concerts a year. probably one a week in the summer, sometimes 2. now, we have an average of 2 music festivals a year... and with vineland so close to our house, i can see that going up to 3.
every year that ive had more money has resulted in more concerts.
2007 was actually a great year. There were so many shows that I wanted to see that I couldn't go to, that I didn't think it was going to be a good year. I didn't get to too many smaller club shows, but I did alright at the bigger venues and festivals. But looking back on it, I did see a lot of good live Music.
Red Hot Chili Peppers, Roger Waters, Tool, Black Crowes, Robert Randolf, North Mississippi Allstars, The Wailers, Dave Matthews Band, Keller Williams, Ratdog, The Allman Brothers Band, Al & The Transamericans, and Perpetual Groove.
I also made it to 3 festivals: Langerado, Bonnaroo, and the Echo Project.
1999 was a very good year. I saw Roger Waters. I saw DMB w/ Santana and the Roots twice. I made it to four Phish shows. I saw the Disco Biscuits four times, including once at a bar, once opening for moe's Willy Wonka themed Halloween extavaganza (which was mind blowing), the infamous 12/4/99 Irving Plaza show, and capped things off for the millenium at the TLA for their EPIC 4 set New Year's show.
I also went to a bunch of smaller shows in clubs, but can't remember all of the bands. I only made it to one festie, the Autumn Equinox Fest in Brandywine, MD.
But I think the winner is 1994.
In '94 I saw: Aerosmith, Pink Floyd, Lollapalooza (Smashing Pumpkins, Beastie Boys), The Grateful Dead, Traffic, The Rolling Stones, Blind Melon, and The Eagles. All before I had my driver's licence. ;D
Right now, being young in my life, I'd have to say 2006 was probably my best year for live music. Bonnaroo with Radiohead's mind-numbing set was fabulous. And the best show I've ever seen, Tom Waits at the Ryman in August of '06, was truly a phenomenal experience. I also attended the Pitchfork Festival, which I've included my favorites from below.
Other shows from that year:
Man Man @ Little Brother's - 9/19 Kings of Leon @ The Foundry - 9/9 Pela/Lab Partners @ Poison Room - 10/24 Josh Ritter @ Southgate - 4/23 Heartless Bastards @ Southgate - 9/1 (CD Release Show) The Decemberists @ Lifestyle Communities Pavilion - 11/10 Band of Horses @ alchemize - 9/6 Clap Your Hands Say Yeah @ House of Blues - 10/1 Tapes ‘n Tapes/Cold War Kids @ Grog Shop - 6/3 Nickel Creek/Ben Lee @ Moonlite Gardens - 6/7 Liars @ Pitchfork Fest - 7/30 The Walkmen @ Pitchfork Fest - 7/29 Aerosmith/Motley Crue @ Riverbend - 10/9 Headlights @ The Poison Room - 10/10 Clap Your Hands Say Yeah/The Brunettes @ Southgate - 4/5 The Hold Steady @ Southgate - 12/8 Heartless Bastards/Coin Collectors/Times New Viking @ Canal Street Tavern - 3/11 Ben Lee/Rooney @ Newport (Columbus) - 11/5 Medeski, Martin and Wood/Heartless Bastards/Buddy Guy/Dr. John @ Tall Stacks Festival - 10/7 Trey Anastasio @ Cintas - 10/20 Belle & Sebastian/New Pornographers @ Brown Theatre (Louisville) - 3/9 Cursive/Thermals @ Southgate - 10/5 Ani Difranco/Hammel on Trial @ Moonlite Gardens - 6/21
This thread underlines why I wish I'd have saved stubs from every/any ticketed event I've ever attended. What a great scrapbook, let alone story it would have told.
i couldn't even begin to make a list, since, at this point, I remember shows in gaps of several years.
AS in, "I saw a really killer David Byrne show somewhere's between 89 and 92". or
Ozzy, Korn(x2), Life of Agony, Marilyn Manson(x2), The Lunachicks(x2), Civ(x3), The Toadies, Brutal Juice, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Silverchair, Cypress Hill, 311, Rancid(x2), Mrs Guy and the Toilet Boys, NOFX (x2), Foo Fighters, The Amps, That Dog, Goldfinger, No Doubt, The Bouncing Souls, The Ramones(x2), Metallica, Soundgarden, Wu-Tang, Kiss, D Generation, Fishbone, Dance Hall Crashers, Bad Religion, Unwritten Law, The Urge, Sick of It All, Madball, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Reel Big Fish, Cherry Poppin Daddies, AC/DC, Screaming Trees, Rage Against the Machine, NY Loose, Pantera, White Zombie, Deftones, Rocket From The Crypt, 7 Seconds, Cracker Snatch, and 2 of Bob Marley's Kids....
I'm sure there were more that year, but that's all I got off the top of my head in the 5 minutes I'm willing to spend on this!
