These are probably the two I want at Bonnaroo the most, well that is besides Led Zeppelin or Roger Waters. But just a few years ago I didn't really know of Ryan Adams or Tom Waits, their names were familiar but I never went out of my way to collect their music. Now I'm working on collecting both's complete discography and I have most of both of their collections. I have basically fallen in love with their music. I think either one should headline, although I've never seen either in concert, but I'm not sure Bonnaroo would be the festival they would headline. I've heard about Ryan and his habits, and I know he hasn't exactly been consistent with his live show, for example the time he ended the show early when the sound wasn't good enough. But I also know Ryan's recent shows have gone over 3 hours. And he has played in Phil Lesh and Friends. But I think Ryan could be the Sunday headliner because I think his fanbase is a wide variety of people that like many different types of music. Not to mention, he is easily one of my generation's best songwriters. And someone mentioned that Ryan said he isn't playing Bonnaroo this year. I didn't see or hear any proof, but if this is true, I think he could have a chance at being at ACL this year, so hopefully I can get the money together for that.
I think Tom Waits could headline, but I think that would be a long shot. Actually even getting him at Bonnaroo is probably a long shot. I've heard he doesn't play many shows or tour a lot, but maybe someone tried talking him into at the most recent Bridge School Benefit.
So does anyone else want Ryan or Tom at Bonnaroo as badly as I want them there?
Actually I've been telling myself that all I really want to see at Bonnaroo this year is Cake and Tom Waits. Seeing as how Cake is coming Wakarusa, that's not unlikely... and Tom Waits would be one of my few favorites left to see live. 'Roo already covered many live acts on my "to see" favorites list; Radiohead, Flaming Lips, Tool, Wilco, Ween, Oysterhead (at least of the larger-name acts). But damn I'd buy tickets in a second if Tom Waits was there.
its always been a mystery to me as to why ryan adams hasnt played bonnaroo yet. im sure he has been asked every year and turned down for some reason or another. he was supposed to play with phil lesh as a "friend" when phil headlined a vegoose its inagural year. he cancelled before. the cardnials were supposed to be at moe.down this past year. he cancelled. i dont know. i would like to know which ryan i would be getting... but i would see him either way.

Saw Tom Waits at the Ryman Auditorium on his last tour in summer '06... Hands down the best show I've ever seen... I'm an enormous Waits fan, and I have to say that I don't think he could headline... However, he is friends with Les Claypool, has played on Primus records, and has had Claypool on his records, which leads me to believe the most likely situation to see Waits would be a latenight Primus>Waits (which would KICK ARS!)

I'm not sure Ryan Adams is such a great pick for Bonnaroo. He's a bit temperamental. I'd hate to see him leave the stage early because he decided he didn't like the color of lip gloss I was wearing that day.
That being said, I really enjoy his music. But he's a bit of a primadonna and I don't know that a festival such as Bonnaroo is the right place for him.

Tom Waits is the top artists I want to see at Roo, but I don't think it's gonna happen. His show is so focused, so intense, it doesn't seem like it would work well for the wander in and out Roo mentality. He needs complete focus and concentration, not a wandering mind. I just can't see him outdoors in any mentality either.

I saw ryan adams a couple of months ago at the Murat in Indianapolis and could not have been more surprised. I did not know anything about him and the ticket was free. He knocked my socks off. It was a very jammy electric set. He played almost 3 1/2 hours. I closed my eyes and swore I was listening to the Dead. The cardinals were very tight and they would most definatly fit in at Bonnaroo. I hope ryan is in the line up I can't wait to see him again.

i was gonna try to go to that show in indy or the columbus one , i think it was in october, but i couldn't afford the drive from nky and ticket for the show, but i downloaded the columbus show, some of ryan's songs really sound like jerry, if you haven't seen it try to find the album of ryan doing dead covers, listen to that album, that right there will show you why ryan would be perfect for a sunday night headliner, with or without phil and friends....
Download the Indy show off of archives it is a soundboard recording and the quality is very high. It also was reviewed as a 5 star show. Well worth your time for the download.
