i know alot of people on these boards are annoyed by Kanye west, but his new album is pretty good imo.... i think it would be awesome if he could do a which stage show similar to the white stripes. knowing kanye he would probably demand a headlining slot and nothing less. but i think it would be awesome if could actually come to roo and do an evening set without any bitching. anybody have an opinion on the subject?
^^^I would not cry about it, but I probably wouldn't catch the guy's act. He can't flow nearly as well as other mcs we've had at Roo and what he does say isn't all that compelling anymore.

no doubt the closer on sunday on the which stage will be pretty damn big, and most likely near the top of the lineup when it comes out, i think the white stripes were the 4th name on the bill last year, but it seems friday is usually a hip-hop kind of day on the which stage, the 2 years i went the last band to play in this slot was the white stripes in 07 and modest mouse in 05, who filled this slot in the other years? and sunday on the what stage is generally jamband related, and even though the times don't crossover to much, it will probably be someone who kind of conflicts based on fanbase, i'm not saying if you like the person playing the pre-head spot on the what stage, you won't like whoever closes out the which stage, ex. wilco vs. white stripes last year/the word vs. modest mouse in 05, their times didn't really conflict that much, i'm thinking any of these could fill that slot: kanye, lupe fiasco, beastie boys, cake, modest mouse again maybe, raconteurs, jack johnson although i think he'll be on the what stage this year

I myself have seen him perform 3 times already. I enjoyed him the first time I watched him at Coachella but his performance is rather lackluster if you have seen him already. The last time I saw him he was forgetting words to songs and stopped his DJ several times due to this. He would him just jump into another song.

Hey guys, long time listener, first time caller.
I love Kanye West. Sure, he talks about himself and money and designer clothes too much, but almost everyone or everything I love has some glaring flaws. Most of our favorite personalities or main characters in movies/TV shows are quirky or have flaws, but that's what drives them. To quote Kanye, "I'm trying to right my wrongs, but it's funny those same wrongs helped me right this song."
I think Kanye is one of the better writers in the game. I'd rather see Jay-Z or the Fugees, but only because I've seen Mr. West twice.

Any of the bands you listed could except for Lupe Fiasco. He came through Austin last night and played Emo's, a 550 capacity club. Not that Austin is a big hip-hop town, but Kanye and the Beastie Boys would sell out the arena if they came through. I'm not even sure if Lupe sold out Emo's...
This man came up to me just the other day, asked me I'd been born again. I told him, "I didn't think I had." That I had been rejected. But I think, Hell's got all the good bands anyway. And Bonnaroo.
Actually, I tend to be a grouch around those times. I usually skip both events and opt for the great concert scene here the rest of the year. There are some great aftershows around ACL though.
I much prefer smaller venues or ones with great acoustics. The Parish is my favorite venue in Austin followed by The Backyard. But both venues rarely ever have shows I want to go to.
The aftershows are great. but so is ACL. and sxsw, even though i refuse to buy a badge because they're so damn expensive. but it's cool to catch a few shows if you can get in with no badge. the parish is a cool venue for sure!
^^^Last year they stated publicly a few times that the conference was intended for media members only, and that it was a conference and blah blah blah. Which is true and not true because a ton of money is made off the kids who come here just for the musical events. And then to know when and where they were selling the wristbands, you had to text them your cell phone number so they could text you with the time and location when it was happening. In other words, if you were out of town or had work or just happened to not get the message, you were nuts out of luck in the wristband department. And when you have a job, and you're competing with college kids who don't have a job and only 12-15 hours of classes each week, you're further nuts out of luck.
It just left an odd taste in a lot of people's mouths last year, especially locals.
That and they shut down a bunch of non-SXSW sponsored after parties for pretty bogus reasons.

Sorry to hijack this thread! I hear ya on how the locals must feel. My understanding is they make additional wristbands available once people hit town. I'm too much of a nervous nellie to wing it, so I have a friend in town who is picking up a wristband for me. Lineup looks promising thus far.
