i could see MMJ in that spot but i could also see a darkhorse named Leftover Salmon. they would fit perfectly in that spot and it's perfect fit for them

Last year was the first year they have done this. Every year prior all bands were done prior to the headliners. I think Superfly put in this spot for a few reasons. They were booking bigger and bigger acts. While some acts are huge (White Stripes), they just don't have the show (mainly length) to fill a headlining spot. Also, I feel they wanted to give the folks who generally don't stay for the Sunday night jamband headliner something big to end their weekend on. For this reason, I don't think any type of jamband will play this spot.
The White Stripes were the fourth band on the initial announcement last year, so I guess when it finally comes out, that may give us a clue too.
This man came up to me just the other day, asked me I'd been born again. I told him, "I didn't think I had." That I had been rejected. But I think, Hell's got all the good bands anyway. And Bonnaroo.

Love to see it, but I just don't think it will happen. Preheadliner What Stage, or closing down the Which Stage is all that's left for them to do, before they headline!
That being said, if Superfly saw fit to have them repeat their 2006 latenight, you bet your ass I would be there!

i see mmj doing a which stage late night judging by the success of the tent slot in 06. in terms of the which stage closer, i believe in 06 it was sonic youth closing the which stage out, and in 05 it was modest mouse. that being said it seems like the alternative "headliner" closes out the which stage.

I think most of your choices could work (bolded above), but there is no way Spree, Shins or a few of those others are big enough to be the fourth band on the initial lineup.

See I don't think it is that simple. i see them preheadliner or mid afternoon one of the days on the What Stage. The Which Stage will close with something rocking or upbeat.

^^Me too, i saw them 03' at Lollapallooza. Best band on the bill.. Others were; Rooney Donnas Audioslave Incubus Jurassic 5 (also sick) Janes Addiction
Others were treated to A perfect circle aswell, but not cincy

You do realize that once the line-up is released, you then switch to I wonder who's playing when? and who's gonna conflict with who? and I hope this band is in an artist addition. Etc.

I dont think its going to be Plant and Krauss in that spot, they really only have one album of work together so that wouldnt be a spot that would fill there. I'm thinking they'd go basically where Ben Harper/Keller Williams/Spoon/etc was last year.

I'm pretty sure Bonnie Rait closed the Which Stage in 06'.
